Wednesday Forecast

1:20AM

DAYS 1-5 (MAY 17-21)
A few adjustments in this update, mainly to slow timing of systems and increase the temperature forecast a little bit for Sunday. The basic idea is the same with high pressure in control of the weather, but a warm front will pass through the region early Wednesday and introduces air that is more like early to mid summer for Wednesday and Thursday, and a cold front will pass through the region on Friday, cooling it down somewhat for the start of the weekend. It may rebound on Sunday but there is still a question of a potential front in the vicinity that could result in a larger temperature contrast. That type of even is hard to pinpoint more than a couple days in advance, so will keep an eye on it as it gets closer. The only real risk of any rain would be an isolated shower or thunderstorm with Friday’s cold front.
TODAY: Clouds in eastern areas early, then sun dominates. Highs 60-68 Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, 68-76 South Coast, 76-85 elsewhere except 85-90 north central MA and interior northeastern MA and adjacent southern NH. Wind SW 5-15 MPH with higher gusts.
TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 60-68. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. More humid. Highs 75-83 South Coast except cooler islands, 84-93 elsewhere. Wind SW 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Humid. Lows 62-70. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated to scattered showers/thunderstorms mainly morning to early afternoon. Humid then drier later in the day. Highs 70-77 South Coast, 78-85 elsewhere. Wind SW to W 10-20 MPH.
SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows 52-60. Highs 66-73, coolest coastal areas.
SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows 48-55, coolest interior valleys. Highs 66-82, coolest eastern coastal areas.

DAYS 6-10 (MAY 22-26)
Look for mild but showery weather during the first few days of this period then a cooler trend with drier weather or limited shower activity later in the period.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 27-31)
A low pressure trough may be passing through around the Memorial Day Weekend with the risk of at least some unsettled weather. It’s too early to know for sure what the magnitude and impact would be. Assuming this system was around at the start of the period drier weather would likely follow for the last couple days of the month. Fine-tuning to come in the days ahead.

  1. Drove home through showers from Lexington all the way to Brockton between 2:30 and 3:30. Barely enough to wet the ground, but still a bit unexpected.

  2. Good morning and thank you TK.

IF one were to believe the 2 Candian High Resolution models, it has widespread
lower 90s today for our area. Most other models have upper 80s.

Should be an interesting afternoon. 😀

  3. Thanks TK

Here is someone praying for just no rain on 5/28. About 50 people for a party.

  4. Betting when I come home the kids will be asking for ac to be put in. And I will oblige their request most likely 🙂

  5. Thanks, TK.

Looking forward to the “taste of summer” but glad it will be brief – have to get used to it after a bunch of cool, raw rainy days. Nothing wrong with them either.

  6. Wind is light out of the South at Logan.

Wondering if they spring a sea breeze at least for a time this morning
before the SW really takes over? I don’t know, just wondering.

    1. INDEED Logan has sprung a light sea Breeze. How long will it last, that is the question.

  7. Any of you folks that have to mess with window units and installing/deinstalling ever look into getting central A/C or even a mini split?
A mini split is great since there is no duct work to mess with. They are quiet as a mouse, economical to run, and generally take only a day or two to install. You can get them with multiple condensers/blowers to cool several rooms.

  9. Norwood and Taunton as of 10:22 AM are up to 79 while facata Logan
is sitting at 73 with a SE sea breeze. Good ole Logan. You can count on them
    for a sea breeze.

    1. Logan’s Dew Point is up to 54, but much of that is due to the wind off of the
water. Inland dps in the mid to upper 40s.

  10. Summit of Mt Washington up to 46.6F

I’d love to be sitting on any stream/river at the base of the white mountains today, they are probably roaring with melt water from the early week pounding of snow.

  11. Logan might have its high today between 5 and 7pm tonight.

One of those where it’s mid 70s most of the day, then jumps to 84F around 6pm.

    1. Actually, the wind has shifted to the SSW and the temperature has jumped
      to 81.

I thought that the wind would be more SW to perhaps even WSW today
and not SSW. But who’s complaining. SSW would cap the high temperature
just a tad with indirect cooling from the ocean South of NE, Unless of course
the wind shifts more to SW or WSW.

  12. Ok, Logan’s temperature is now really on the rise as the wind has shift to full SW
and NOT SSW anymore. Up to 82 now and climbing. What will the ceiling be?

Last evening, Eric predicted 88 for Boston. 6 degrees to go to make that
number. Will it go higher? We shall see.

I want to see the Noon and 1PM temps, then I’ll make a high temp guess/prediction. 😀

  13. AC systems are expensive. $2000 for a mini split, we got our window AC free from a friend who moved into a house with central AC! Though no doubt, something covering more of the house would be better. Just think a cheap/used portable AC might work out better.

    1. Agree Bostbliz. Add to that having a house that is 170 years old, adds to the problem. 😀

      1. Cost aside, a mini split is ductless, so you can put them virtually anywhere. Its a good option when you cant run ducts. But you would have to pay a little.

        1. Sure, but you still have to either run them up walls or over ceilings or even worse inside walls. My wall are not
your standard studs with plaster board over it.
My walls have the old fashion horse hair plaster
on horizontal slats fastened to the studs.

Further, I’d much rather deal with window AC than
have pipes on the walls or ceilings or even floors.

  14. I guess its all in perspective. $2000 seems pretty cheap to me for not having to mess with all that year after year. But if you got a window unit free..hey 🙂

  15. Logan up to 88. Springfield and Fitchburg already at the 90 Degree mark.

I will now say with some confidence that Boston reaches or exceeds 90 today.

We shall see how badly I do on this.

  16. Latest temps:

    Norwood: 90
    Lawrence: 90
    Springfield: 91
    Bedford: 90
    Logan: 88
    Pymouth: 88

    It’s 1:50.

Can Logan rise 2 degrees before we lose the max heating of the Sun? We shall see.

  17. I’m sure Logan will make 90, they’re at 89 now at the 2PM ob. Overachieving temperatures on sunny days continue to be a near lock. I could see someone in northern MA up around 97 tomorrow.

However, if you like summer, enjoy it while you can. My thinking on the end of this month is unchanged. AO/NAO way negative, and the trend has been to prolong the dip. Cool (though not as bad as the recent stretch) and unsettled will generally be the rule for much of late month. Too early to say for sure, but I don’t think beach weather is in the cards for Memorial Day weekend.

    1. It seems that many memorial days are cool. Could be selective memory, but
I don’t recall too many warm ones. There was one just a few years ago
that was near or above 90.

Still time. Hope you are incorrect.

    2. As long as that Saturday does not rain as I landed a nice job 13yds of mulch to spread on a 96′ runway .

  18. Now I see the following:

    Logan: 90
    Lawrence: 91
    Beverly: 90
    Norwood: 90
    Bedford: 90
    Fitchburg: 91
    Springfield: 91
    Holyoke: 91
    Athol: 90

  19. Wow, I didnt think Logan would make it today. Probably be a few ticks warmer tomorrow.

  20. 92 in Wrentham. Summer scorcher. JP Dave mentioned the Canadian short range guidance being warmest this morning; nailed it. It’s not too uncomfortably hot though, dew points not much of a factor. If we were keeping these same dew points I’d say someone could try for 100 tomorrow (and indeed, the Canadian guidance has some of us pretty close). But dew points will be going up as well, so mid 90s will be the cap for most tomorrow, with a couple upper 90s possible.

  21. Does Logan hit 90 Friday mid-late morning?

If so, that would be the first heat wave of the year! Not sure if it would be the earliest ever?

  22. I was thinking that Thursday night was going to be the real warm night, but tonight is proving to be as well. Lots of 70s hanging in there and dps creeping up towards 60F.

  23. Yup. Lots more complaints about the heat today from people that wanted the hot weather to arrive back in the chilly pattern. I think they should be subject to another stretch of unsettled and cool weather. Oh look! It probably will happen next week! 😉
