Thursday Forecast

1:31AM

DAYS 1-5 (MAY 25-29)
Low pressure approaches from the southwest later today and passes just southeast of or over southern New England during Friday before wandering eastward out to sea early in the Memorial Day Weekend. High pressure moves in Saturday and lingers into Sunday but then moves off to the east as another low pressure area approaches from the southwest by Memorial Day Monday, which looks like the coolest day with the highest chance of wet weather of the 3 long weekend days. In addition, from today through the weekend, tides will be astronomically high so some minor to borderline moderate coastal flooding is possible at high tide times, especially along east-facing shores.
TODAY: Thickening overcast early. Periods of rain develop south to north mid morning on. Highs 54-59. Wind E increasing to 5-15 MPH interior, 10-20 MPH coast.
TONIGHT: Overcast. Areas of fog and drizzle. Periods of rain, some possibly heavy especially late evening into overnight including the slight chance of thunder favoring eastern MA and RI. Lows 48-53. Wind E 5-15 MPH interior, 10-20 MPH coast, with higher gusts.
FRIDAY: Overcast. Areas of fog and drizzle. Periods of rain, most widespread morning and midday, becoming more spotty during the afternoon. Highs 56-61. Wind variable 5-15 MPH becoming N 10-20 MPH.
FRIDAY NIGHT: Breaking clouds. Lows 47-52. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY: Sun/cloud mix. Highs 60-65 coast, 66-71 interior. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 43-48 interior, 48-53 coast. Wind light variable.
SUNDAY: Sunshine followed by increasing clouds. Highs 60-65 coast, 66-71 interior, but may cool somewhat during the afternoon. Wind light variable becoming E 5-15 MPH.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain late. Lows 50-55. Wind light E.
MONDAY – MEMORIAL DAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain/drizzle. Highs 55-60 coast, 60-65 interior. Wind E 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (MAY 30-JUN 3)
The last couple days of May should feature a warmer westerly flow but a couple disturbances bring a shower/t-storm risk to the region. Somewhat drier and seasonably warm weather expected the first few days of June but a shower risk may return at some point on June 3.

DAYS 11-15 (JUN 4-8)
Fair weather to start then a few episodes of showers as a broad low pressure trough progresses into the Northeast. Temperatures near to slightly below normal.

  1. Thanks TK. Here’s hoping your upcoming family events go well.
Also, looking forward to those first few days of June – they sound like great weather.

  2. Repost from Tuesday for anyone who might have missed this. Just looking to see if folks think Sutton is too far for a meet and greet. I know it is too far in the distance to commit πŸ™‚

I spoke with Brian about having a meet and greet at my house in August. Between us, we came up with two dates that might work – August 20 and 27. Both are Sundays and my thought was some conversations and munchies for a couple of hours starting around 1:30ish. I don’t know how anyone feels about driving as far as Sutton, however, so thought I’d ask.

    1. Sounds good Vicki & it’s nice of you to offer your home but I will not be able to make it.

    2. I will try to make it – I really want to meet you and everyone. It is some distance for me here in Sudbury but not bad. It depends on how Marc and me are. Hopefully we will be ok – the past several months, as you know, have been crazy w/drs. and such but I will try to make it and definitely look forward to it.

      1. Distance isn’t a problem for me (I commute from Brockton to Nashua every day). However, the weekend of 8/20, I’ll be in Montreal.

    3. I would absolutely love to see you and your awesome family again, and I would absolutely love to meet everyone from here, too!

  3. Good morning and thank you TK.

Did You say your daughter was graduating from Harvard today?

WOW! Congratulations! That is truly awesome. I didn’t know you were Mr.
    money bags.

My son chose BU over Harvard. Why? Easy, He had a FULL 4 year scholarship to BU
while I would have had to pay for Harvard. No thank you and my son agreed 100%.
Daughter was plenty bright enough for Harvard, but she didn’t keep her High school
grades quite high enough for Harvard (I’ll leave it at that). She had to settle for Boston College.

Harvard is quite an accomplishment for your daughter. You should be very proud.

    1. As a Law School Eagle myself I must say I was very happy to settle for BC! For undergrad I went out West and frolicked under the Eucalyptus trees in Claremont at Pomona College. Nothing but good things to say about both – extremely different – experiences. But honestly getting into a strong college or university now takes nothing short of a Herculean effort and Harvard may be the toughest of all – especially applying from the East coast – so I am bowed in reverence to any kid that makes it in and was able to remain balanced and happy doing so. Congratulations!!!!!

      1. Nicely stated and I concur.
I didn’t mean anything negative by saying my daughter settled
for BC. BC is a fine school. Poor choice of words on my part.
What I really meant was that she “could” have been accepted to
Harvard IF she applied herself in High School at Boston Latin School. Boston Latin Students who excel are fast tracked to harvard and will be accepted IF they maintain the proper grades.
My son did, while my daughter did not.

My son graduated #7 in a class of nearly 400. My daughter
in the lower 1/2. Therein lies the problem.

        1. No worries – I didn’t take it offensively at all! And surviving the rigors at Boston Latin is its own ball of wax! Being a happy go lucky consummate underachiever in school I would not have made it through a week at Boston Latin!

          1. Me either. I couldn’t pay attention long enough
to learn anything, plus I was bored the entire school day. No teacher was going to tel me anything. I got through high school and College with barely lifting a finger. I detested home work and frankly anything associated with school that I didn’t want to do OR that interfered with my recreational activities. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

However, I still managed to learn quite a bit and despite it all graduate from college with a degree in Mathmatics from NorthEastern University.
With my grades and attitude and severe lack of funds I couldn’t go any place else. I paid every dime of tuition myself, by often working 20+ hours a week while taking a full course load.

            1. Good heavens….we are a lot alike when it comes to how we feel about school. I ended up going to Katherine Gibbs because I knew it would give me a liberal arts background and I didn’t have to take SATs (not necessarily the order of reason). Although, we had professors from BU and Harvard for our history, economics, etc classes. Back then it was $2500/year (two years). I paid that for my youngest’s pre-school. Crazy. I think I might have had a bit of drive that pushed me further once into the work world….but don’t tell anyone because I am sure no one has noticed.

    2. JPD, I went to Harvard and I’m not moneybags by any stretch… got scholarships, grants and student loans. BC and BU are amazing schools, and in my opinion, one would get a very similar education from all three. πŸ˜€ On the whole, I’d say all WHW members are highly intelligent folks πŸ˜€

  4. RAIN has descended upon the city, a bit ahead of schedule. πŸ˜€

NOT liking the forecast for Monday. Was going to attempt to have my wife
come fishing with me. She’s deathly afraid of ticks and lime disease. I have a couple
of spots picked out that the ticks would not be a problem, but RAIN on Monday would be. Will have to try for Sunday.

      1. Come to think of it, I don’t recall him mentioning hurricanes, but the fact that he expects wetter than normal, probably those are are very much on the table for us as well?

  5. Definitely one of the most dreary months of May I can remember. And it’s going to end on an appropriate note. Hate this weather…

  6. Congrats to your daughter TK, that’s awesome! Light rain for most of the day so far here in Wrentham. Heavier downpours tonight.

Lots of news in the weather community today. NOAA released their 2017 hurricane season forecast this morning. They tend to give very broad ranges/probabilities, but they’re calling for an enhanced possibility of an above normal hurricane season. There’s been somewhat of a shift in sentiment on the hurricane season; originally near or below normal was the thinking from most; now near to above is thought more likely by many. I think the biggest takeaway going into the season is we have very high uncertainty compared to most years on how this hurricane season will turn out. And that’s only regarding overall activity; highlighting potential threat areas is a whole different story.

Second: Big news on GOES-16: It’s going East! GOES-16 will replace GOES-13 as the primary GOES-East satellite, with GOES-13 remaining on standby as a backup. GOES-16 has previously been in a central location during it’s non-operational phase while the determination was made on where to put it. This will be great for Atlantic hurricane monitoring.

  7. I got accepted to most of the schools I applied too,and not being accepted was not because of my grades in high school. the problem to me was the Money!! Those grants, scholarships and financial aid etc oh really good if you can get them and hold on to them. I was accepted to BU, BC, Northeastern, UML and University of Maine, I got the Abigail Adams scholarship which was for any state school, so me looking at money and seeing that I had two younger brothers I said ok state school so I can use the scholarship. Then I was seeing how people had major loans even those with grants, scholarships financial aid (which by the way I get no financial aid). I decided to go to MCC paid out of pocket not a single loan. The associate’s degree made it so that I got a good size increase in pay at my job. Also going to that school and completing the mass transfer block made it so I can go to any state school, and they could not turn me away. NO school is better or worse than the other unless they are not accredited. It all comes down to money, there are schools that turn people with extremely high GPA’s away as well. There should not be a fight between the public colleges and the private but there is also no need to think a degree in harvard or BU or Northeastern or UMass etc are any worse or better than the other. a Bio degree is a Bio degree, A chemistry degree is a chemistry degree. A degree in Nursing is a degree in nursing, The difference even thought its small is grad school. Also different schools might not have the degree you are looking for.

    1. There are a few industries where it matters such as investment banking. But yeah, for the most part people will be OK going to any school state or private.

  8. Thanks all!!

2 hour break between Harvard Commencement and Nate’s prom. I think I need a coffee.

And Dave, trust me, I’m NOT Mr. Moneybags. πŸ˜‰

    1. Congrats to your daughter and hope Nate has a great time at the prom. I guess I won’t be rooting him on in bowling tonight. πŸ™‚

  9. Wasn’t Nate just having his first teen birthday something like yesterday??? I cannot believe he is going to his senior prom. And I am so very proud for your daughter and for you, TK!!!

  10. A friend of Mac’s from his Rome days posted on FB that Zuckerberg’s commencement speech at Harvard was very inspiring. I will have to look for a link.

  11. Batch of convection just showed up on radar moving towards the South Coast. Blitztorung says that batch has been producing lightning for a while, so should be some good storms for anyone who gets hit.

    1. Definitely some thunderstorms in that mass. The HRRR has been modeling it well. If you get hit, you’ll know it; any thunder under the inversion we have tonight will be loud.

  12. Thank GOD it’s cloudy, cold and rainy today again. I couldn’t take the 65-70 degree scorching heat and blazing sun we’ve had so much of this month. A half day in a row of that is more than one should have to endure.

Since I can’t relocate still, I’m going to buy a wetsuit so I can attempt to swim in my pool this summer.

    1. Except 2009 it was June & July.

This is May, and the month is not really that far from “normal”. πŸ˜‰

          1. Not shining anything.

            Simply stating weather-based facts.

This is the weather we get here.

Beautiful sunny warm weather is also the weather we get here – just not all the time.

            Facts, not turds. πŸ™‚

  13. Oh how we all forget…

    Boston’s high temp June 1 2015: 49
    Boston’s high temp June 2 2015: 49

Everyone then said “2009 all over again?” Well, it did take us all week to pull out of that cool spell with highs in the 50s June 3-5 and highs in the 60s on the weekend of June 6-7. But well, it was still spring then too.

Our tendency is to make everything seems like it’s lasted way longer than it has lately and I’m not really sure why. Weather Psychology project? πŸ˜‰ I still think the media is playing a roll in this with their “weather-in-your-face” headlines and declarations that everything is “weird” or “crazy”. Nope. Sorry. If you wanna bite the bait, go right ahead. But that’s all it really is.

Having a stretch of cool or wet or dry or hot weather is far more “normal” than having a stretch of “normal” weather. Does anyone actually realize that? Maybe it’s just me…

    1. OH yes, and I recall many people declaring “summer over” before it actually started, after a cool first week of June in 2015, which made me laugh in hysterics.

Boston only had 14 days of 90+ in summer 2015. Oh, so terrible. People were complaining about how hot it was by early September, which, by the way, is still summer, even though your pumpkin spice products had already been out for autumn for about a month.

The weather isn’t messed up, people are. πŸ˜›

      1. Yeah I wasn’t in that camp nor do I normally complain, but it is bothering me this time for whatever reason. I wonder where we’d be this month if we took out those three 90 degree days.

  14. So I ran some number based on Logan. We are averaging 62 for the month. Is 66 the average? If we take out the three days in the 90’s we’d be at 58 as an average for the month.

    1. And would go along with that cool/wet theme for spring 2017 which was our drought-ender.

I think my issue is many people are facing this with the mentality that it’s already summer, and that summer is somehow ruined because we had a wet spring.

What they should be doing is this…
Being thankful that the drought was ended by a pattern that did not produce any catastrophic flooding.
Being thankful that this pattern is taking place BEFORE summer.

  15. Good morning. busy, busy busy these last few days!

Nice thunder and lightning show overnight. Some more good rains as well.

Me ole rain gauge showed 1.47 inches between yesterday and overnight.

On the way in this morning, I was really noticing the Dark Rich green vegetation all over, whether it be grass, trees or shrubs. I mean REALLY GREEN! For a moment this morning, I thought I was driving through the outskirts of Dublin, Ireland. πŸ˜€

    1. This has been one of the best drought-recovery periods we’ve had and overall one of the best springs for vegetation, with the small exception of a few things that suffered from some intense cold in March.
