DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 22-26)
A one-day heat and humidity episode will be quickly put to rest by a cold front that passes by early Wednesday. The timing of this front is such that it is likely sparing the region an outbreak of strong to possibly severe thunderstorms, leaving only the risk of a few showers and locally heavier storms coming through late tonight. Drier air will flow in later Wednesday and be in control into late week, along with somewhat cooler temperatures.
TODAY: Partly cloudy. Humid. Highs 78-85 south Coast, 85-92 elsewhere. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Increasing clouds. Showers/thunderstorms possible from northwest to southeast late night and overnight hours. Humid. Lows 65-72. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy with showers and thunderstorm exiting from northwest to southeast early, then partly sunny with a slight risk of isolated afternoon showers. Humid start, drier finish. Highs 77-85. Wind shifting to W 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows in the 50s. Highs in the 70s.
FRIDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows from the middle 50s to lower 60s. Highs from the middle 70s to lower 80s.
SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows in the 50s. Highs in the 70s.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 27-31)
Generally fair with temperatures pleasant but somewhat below normal to start the period as high pressure holds. Increasing humidity and possibly a few showers later in the period. Indications for now are that any tropical activity will be kept to the south and east but will continue to watch it.

DAYS 11-15 (SEPTEMBER 1-5)
Seasonably warm and somewhat humid with a few shower and thunderstorm opportunities during this time period, which includes the Labor Day Weekend. Will fine-tune and detail this forecast going forward.

    One thing I can say I was excited about with the eclipse and that was a photo
    that Eric shared last evening of a Passenger jet passing in front of the sun with
    the partial eclipse and it was totally awesome and I can’t find it anywhere.

    Does anyone have it? Tx

            I think I have some how inadvertently tied
            my personal smart phone to the office and thus
            have the same restrictions. I’ll have to undo that
            when I have a chance. I noticed I had trouble
            with YouTube the other night.

  7. JPDave I was thinking that as well that a tornado watch maybe issued for Upstate NY.
    To me when you have a 5% chance for a tornado in the northeast that is an elevated risk.
    I don’t believe there has been a tornado watch issued in the northeast this summer.

  8. Something to keep an eye on tonight the SREF is highlighting parts of New England I will be it only 5% chance and not the 15% and 30% probabilities shown in parts of Upstate NY and PA.

  11. Thankfully this is not a long stay with the high humidity. Once that front crosses overnight early tomorrow morning a very nice stretch of weather.

  12. Believe me, I am NOT complaining, but am wondering what is holding
    the temperatures down. Currently, it is only 82 at Logan with a DP of 72.

    The wind has a decent Southerly component and there is considerable cloudiness
    around. But it looks to me as if the wind has “enough” Westerly component to
    allow the temperature to make a run at 90 or slightly above.

    Just curious is all.

    btw, the Albany radar is down. Hope they get that operational soon as it may
    be sorely needed later this afternoon.

      1. It will be interesting to see IF it gets extended a bit farther to the East. I suppose it will depend upon the action going on as evening
        approaches and what they see are the atmospheric conditions.

  15. One tornado warning in western NY. I would expect in that tornado watch were going to see more tornado warnings before the day is out.

  16. Based on what I am seeing from the NAMs, HRRR and the SREF, I think that the
    tornado watch may “possibly” be extended into Western MA, CT and VT, perhaps as far East as Worcester or just a bit West of there. We shall see.

    This would include your area JJ. Stay tuned just in case. Perhaps I am full of crap.
    Would NOT be the first time.

  17. JPDave that SREF model you put the link for earlier shaded those areas you mentioned.
    It will be interesting when the new run of the SREF comes out if those areas are still highlighted. Now the SREF only has a 5% chance but still we have seen in the past you could get a tornadic storm with a percentage that lovw.

  19. Right now you got a line of storms with severe thunderstorm warnings and a tornado warning moving into central NY so that radar lighting up like a Christmas tree. Sometimes you get these kinks in these lines of storms that could have a tornado with it.

  21. This part of NY has been under the gun for severe weather a few times this summer including that EF2 tornado last month south of Buffalo.

  22. Meanwhile, down here at Scusset Beach, the low clouds have returned, the fog is lowering and the mist is thickening. Busy breeze with oppressive humidity.

    1. We were in East Sandwich today and got a few breaks of sun before the clouds and fog and even drizzle rolled back in.

  23. Taunton take for tonight
    The complication in the forecast tonight will be how quickly the CAPE values drop after sunset, and how quickly stronger shear arrives. It will be delicate balance. At this time, thinking strong convection may arrive east of the Berkshires between 8 and 10 PM, then weaken as it moves east from there. Helicity values in the 0-1km AGL layer range between 150-300 m2/s2. This would mean at least a very low risk for a tornado as these storms move across our region overnight.

  25. JPDave I was just about to say you were mentioning earlier the possibility of the watches expanding further east. Looks like the tornado watch will expand east to include parts of Northern New England and severe thunderstorm watch just west of the MA CT Boarder in the Hudson River Valley of NY.

    1. Well there is my watch “almost” to Worcester, however, it is a severe thunderstorm watch and NOT a tornado watch. I still think that an isolated
      tornado is still possible within this watch area.

      2. This is the SPC wording, even though it is a Severe Thunderstorm
        watch:

        * Primary threats include…
        Scattered damaging wind gusts to 70 mph likely
        A tornado or two possible

  28. SPC has expanded to the 2% tornado chance to include a good chunk of SNE with the exception of southeastern CT RI and eastern MA. I am not surprised this was expanded considering what the SREF is showing which to me is a good short range model when it comes to severe weather and sniffing out areas where a possible tornado could occur.

  29. A couple more tornado warnings popping in Upstate NY one near Utica and another south of Syracuse. SPC had this area in 5% chance of tornado in this area I believe were up to 5 tornado warned storms so far today in Upstate NY including one with a debris signature.

    1. Trying to see rotation with Nexrad radar. No luck.
      Going to try my Radar Scope on my smart phone. 😀

        my mouse on the exact spot, so the ones I am seeing now
        just say tornado.

  32. JPDave I noticed that over the weekend when the NAM was VERY aggressive with severe parameters and it was showing in the sounding I liked on in Upstate NY PDS Tornado and this is the first time I have seen that show up on the soundings here in the Northeast.

  33. Those warning areas just keep following that line in NY. I have not checked to see if there are reports of possible tornados.

  36. On any other day, I’d be focused on the thunderstorms, but not today. The Celtics made a shocking move, trading Isaiah Thomas, Crowder, rookie center Ante Zizic, and that very good Brooklyn Nets draft pick next year for Kyrie Irving. As a very avid Celtics/NBA fan, this came out of nowhere to say the least. Since the heart and soul of the team for the past 2 seasons is now gone…time to focus more on the Red Sox. Looks like they could be a real threat.

      1. After this trade, Cleveland looks like the favorites to win the East. We also traded away a key part of our future, so things aren’t looking too great for a championship right now. At the very least, they should make the playoffs for the next 5-10 years. I think I may be a bit spoiled by now, thinking that that is not a good enough result!

        The Red Sox on the other hand, things are looking fine. The AL isn’t all that strong this year compared to the NL. Let the NL teams wipe themselves out, and it’s between the Sox, Indians, and Yankees right now in the AL. I think the Red Sox stand a good chance of winning out.

        1. Never thought I would say this but I hope the Indians lose early on so the Sox and Yankees can meet in the ALCS. Hopefully the first of many meetings too.

  39. Love the Celtics trade. IT was never going to sign next year. Kyrie is younger and a better overall player. They also didn’t give up Brown or Tatum in the deal.

  40. I second Hadi: Love that trade by the C’s. I’ll miss Isaiah’s heart for sure, but to be honest I think other teams were starting to figure him out by late last season. Crowder wasn’t worth a bag of balls, and we really didn’t need that draft pick. All in all I think the C’s have a dangerous team for this season and beyond, though the competition remains very strong.

    On another note, the NHC will likely be re-initiating advisories on Harvey at 11AM. It has the potential to be a major rain maker for the Texas and Louisiana coasts going into this weekend.

  41. I’m also very much behind the C’s trade. It was a win win for both teams. This team will be fun to watch 🙂

    1. My wife loves IT and was devastated. When she read reasoned accounts on FB, she came around some, but still bitterly disappointed in losing IT.

      I am not much of a basketball fan, but I loved the deal. Celtics were NEVER going to pay IT a max contract, NEVER. Irving is 6-3 and what was IT?
      5-9 with lifts?

      Serious question: What about It’s hip? Were medical exams given prior to the deal? As a requirement to sealing the deal? Curious.

      I heard on the radio (Can’t verify veracity of the report) that Danny thinks IT’s
      hip is Trash and it contributed to IT being unloaded. Interesting take and thus the reason for the medical question. I wouldn’t want this deal nullified if
      Cleveland finds out that IT is damaged goods.
