    1. Winter may be in early and often in 2017. Not sure about when we flip the calendar though. Only preview I’m giving for now. πŸ™‚

      1. Ok, that’s a good tease. May I venture a guess or sorts?

Something in the order of say 3-6 inches or so in November
and 25-30 inches or so in December with not all that much thereafter for a near or slightly below average snow Winter??

Or something along those lines. πŸ˜€

        1. Well I’ll let you put the #’s on it. I’ll do something like that in mid November.

          πŸ™‚

    1. Interesting. I’d heard worst in 60 years for Ireland. I had not heard England. Was that report in European news or US?

      1. I should have said I was reading papers from the area as Joshua does. Lesson learned from some one special πŸ˜‰

      2. Europe. And for Ireland it was the most powerful storm (in terms of wind gusts) since 1961’s ex-hurricane.

  1. Season ending injury for Gordon Hayward. Looked horrible. Someone said bone was showing through (ankle). Have to wonder about his career too. Feel absolutely horrible. Fans in Cleveland were stunned…some looked like they were crying as did the players on both teams.

    1. I don’t follow basketball. My grandson came downstairs to tell me. I don’t even have the words. He is in my prayers.

  2. The Gordon Hayward injury was so tough to watch.
Yankees with a great comeback trailing 4-0 after 6 innings with only 1 hit. If they win today I think there are going to the World Series and it looks it will be against the Dodgers unless the Cubs do what the Red Sox did in 04 against the Yankees come back from 3-0 down in a best of seven series.

  3. How are you measuring these storms… By damage? Then of course the great storm of 1987 would be considered worst. Winds of that magnitude could so so much more damage then than now.

    1. It’s hard to compare as there are too many factors and some of the areas being measured are not in the same locations.

It’s similar to but not exactly the same as saying a CAT 4 hurricane will cause more damage in Florida now than in 1960. We all know why that’s the case though.

Also not every country in the world has upped their standards of construction, and many still have very old and historic structures. So there are just so many variables when it comes to measuring and comparing.

There’s an article about the net I need to find that talks about Ireland’s “worst” storms and you can make a case for about 5 or 6 different ones throughout observed history, all for varying reasons. I’ll pull it up later.

My reason for noting these is not to dispute or debate climate change impacts. My view on that is well-known here (right Vicki?). I just like to point out the variations we have to consider before drawing quick conclusions about things. Science at work.

      1. Right, TK. I believe you and I share a view on climate change and especially how to approach it so that, heaven forbid, it can be removed from politics.

With regard to Matt’s question, I did wonder the same thing about measurement. I’ve been wondering about it for a bit after another well publicized comment was made in Puerto Rico.

I am not sure why a storm would be ranked by destruction or lives. I understand that you can say most destructive storm or storm that took the most lives. But I would think worst storm would refer to its power….its specific attributes??

        1. You would think so, but even though that in itself is hard to measure, you still have the issue of various media using various standards to report something as “worst”, “strongest”, “coldest”, “hottest”, “driest”, “wettest”, etc., etc., enough to render the term overly vague. This may be the biggest problem that exists in communication of data to the general public, and when you add in the “catch-your-eye” headlines, which is what sticks with people more than the data within, it’s even worse.

          1. I would agree that media can manipulate but you also know my view on that. If a person allows himself to be manipulated, is it the fault of the media or of that person? There are lots of sources, several of which are relatively nonbiased and reliable. I’m not always spot on with this but I sure try.

However, all of that said, mets and those in the know should, I believe, us strength, etc as a metric and not damage.

  4. Thank you, TK.

“Worst storm ever” is an overused phrase. Part of the problem are the terms by which “worst” is defined. And, to Matt’s point above do we measure “worst” in terms of damage? The other part is collective amnesia. I think the January 1990 storm that hit the British Isles and Western Europe was almost as bad as the 1987 event. I was there for both, and for some reason the 1990 storm sticks out more in my mind than the 1987 one. In January 1990, dozens of people died in the Netherlands and Belgium – mostly by fallen trees, sign posts, overturned trucks and cars. Wind gusts in Amsterdam (which is about 20 km inland) reached 12 on the Beaufort scale, which means that at the coast they were likely sustained 12 on the Beaufort scale. I don’t think Ophelia achieved that level of wind, although probably sustained winds of 11 on the Beaufort scale happened in Mayo county and other ocean-facing counties.

  5. On sports, Hayward’s injury was indeed gruesome. While I don’t pretend to know the physical details of the injury, this would appear to be a devastating blow to Hayward, as I think that more was severely impacted than just bone.

JJ, the Yankees are this year’s `Cinderella’ story. I think Cashman should be given credit for not only rebuilding a perennial contender, but also making important moves at the trade deadline to bolster the roster.

    1. Joshua,

Reports out there demonstrate an ankle dislocation with clean fracture to the tibia. There is no impairment to blood vessels or ligaments which is essential to Hayward’s prognosis and recovery. If these reports are indeed accurate, Hayward could be back on the court as early as March. Signs are encouraging and do not support the idea of a career ending injury purported by some.

      1. Thanks Arod. Nice to hear. That bone is such a weight bearing bone that it must be totally and completely healed and for some time before allowing him to return to the court.

Let us hope he makes a full recovery, whether or not he rejoins the team this year. PLEEEEEEEZE do not let him return prematurely.

        1. You are completely correct that the tibia is the weight bearing bone of the lower leg. Had the fracture involved the fibula (a non-weight bearing bone), the injury would not have been nearly as debilitating.

      2. I do not, as I have said, follow basketball; but this is wonderful to hear. Thank you, Arod. Always makes me smile when I see your name among those who have recently posted along the side of the blog.

          1. Went to bed early last night so I diddn’t the encouraging news (as compared to that which was being broadcast during the game).. He’s now at the Baptist which is one of the best for this type of injury.

  6. Joshua its been a magical run for the Yankees. I didn’t they could beat Cleveland and they did. If they win today I believe there going to the World Series. Dallas Kueckel is pitching today and Justin Verlander will go game six so if the Astros win game six started by Verlander I like the Yankees in a game 7 on the road with the better pitcher.
Yankees pitching has been great this series and the offense finally woke up the last few games.

    1. JJ, I agree, the last two games were must wins and they came through in dramatic fashion. If they can win one of the next two games vs either Kuechel or Verlander, they have a great shot at winning Game 7 and making it to the World Series. Now that they have already seen both earlier on in this series, I think they will be able to score a few more runs off of them. Not to mention, the Yankees have all the momentum now.

Regardless what happens from here on out, they have already exceeded my expectations for the season and makes me excited for what’s to come in the next several years.

  7. Thank you, Arod, for your explanation. It looked so bad that I presumed ligaments were involved. Glad to hear this is not the case.

    1. Completely agree. With a fracture dislocation, it is not uncommon for additional structural injury (ligamentous or vascular) to occur symbiotically. I tried am surprised and who knows, maybe we learn that was the case once the surgeons go in and operate later today. Let’s hope this will not be the case.

  8. Mark the Yankees future is very bright. If they could win the World Series this would be the best World Series title of my life since it was not expected. This was suppose to be a rebuild lets see what the young kids could do. A lot of people were saying Yankees are two years away from competing for championships. Clearly they are ahead of schedule.

  9. I’m gonna puke if its the Dodgers and Yankees in the WS. With that said, if I had to chose a team to root for it would surprisingly be the Yankees. They have a like-able team unlike the Yankees teams of the 90’s and early 2000’s

  10. Dodgers Yankees World Series FOX would love that for the ratings. Today is the 40 year anniversary of Reggie Jackson hitting 3 home runs in a World Series game against the Dodgers.

  11. Hi. Back in the “home office” under the admin account. Working on the update. Should be quick and easy.
