Sunday Forecast

10:27AM

Happy Easter to those celebrating today!

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 1-5)
The first 5 days of April will take us on a wild weather ride of changing conditions. No fooling. It starts today with a gusty breeze and mild air at first, then a cool-down, as a cold front has moved through. Cold air arrives tonight and sets the stage for a minor snow event Monday as a wave of low pressure passes just south of New England. This will be an accumulating snow for much of the region, but the accumulation will not really have an impact on any main roadways. Once that moves away, it’s dry and cold late Monday through early Tuesday, then a strong warm front approaches with rain, which may start as snow/sleet in some areas depending on how quickly it arrives. Many warm fronts struggle to get through here in the spring, and you’d think that would be the case this time, but it won’t be. We’ll have a push of very warm air for part of Wednesday, before a strong cold front charges in with showers and even possible thunderstorms, then returns cold air, but dry conditions to the region just in time for the Red Sox home opener on Thursday afternoon. If you are going to this game, dress for a blustery, chilly day. If you are lucky enough to be in the sun, be thankful. The shade will be quite chilly that day. If this were July, you’d be hoping for the opposite. Forecast details…
TODAY: Increasing sun. Highs 53-59. Wind W 10-20 MPH, gusting to 30 MPH.
TONIGHT: Increasing clouds. Lows 25-32. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY: Overcast with snow accumulating a coating to 2 inches all areas and locally 2-4 inches south of the Mass Pike during the morning, however accumulation will not really take place on most roadways and some walkways. Clearing during the afternoon. Highs 35-42. Wind light variable.
MONDAY NIGHT: Increasing clouds. Lows 25-32. Wind light variable.
TUESDAY: Thickening overcast. Rain arriving, may start as brief snow and/or sleet especially interior areas. Highs 38-45 occurring late day. Wind light SE.
WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy with patchy fog early. Partly sunny midday. Mostly cloudy with rain showers and possible thunderstorms later. Pre-dawn temperatures rise into the 50s. Highs from the upper 50s to lower 60s south-facing shores, middle 60s to lower 70s elsewhere.
THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Windy. Lows in the 30s. Highs in the 40s.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 6-10)
Uncertain how it plays out but have to watch this entire period for potential unsettled weather, which may include snow for parts of the region. Temperatures generally below normal.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 11-15)
This period should feature somewhat drier weather overall but cannot rule out a passing system with wet weather at some point. Temperatures may moderate especially late in the period, however this is a low confidence forecast.

  1. Thanks Tk . Your numbers are the highest I’ve seen if the high end verified I was seeing C-1 tops in Boston & Boston will be extremely very low impact event . We shall see . Go bruins Tk they on NBC or nesn

    1. NWS #’s are higher than mine, and I’m leaning toward the C versus the 2. Also, no accumulation on pavement as it’s a daytime event and not particularly heavy or long lasting.

        1. About right. Very very low impact event. More snow in the air and temporary accumulation on unimportant surfaces than anything else.

  2. As for the home opener, dress for a Pats playoff game. 😉

MLB should begin in mid-April so northern teams can start their seasons at home instead of the road and/or done stadiums.

      1. I believe the season is starting in March (earliest ever) because of the collective bargaining agreement, which includes a significant uptick in off days during the regular season, starting in 2018.

I agree with you that the season should start later, not earlier. But, in order to accomplish that they’ll have to reduce the numbers of games played. I don’t think ownership will go for this due to foregone revenues. Players may also balk for reasons that have to do with money also. While baseball has been losing popularity, revenues are still very healthy – for TV rights, ads, merchandise, concessions, ticket sales. Paradoxically, when baseball was at its zenith in the 1950s and 60s, revenues were paltry (as were salaries). It was very rare for a team in the 1960s to get a million in attendance in any given year. There was hardly any merchandising. TV rights were purchased for a bargain in local markets and contracts signed with local TV stations.

      1. I was just about to post something on that.
That is a BIGGIE!! Over 1 foot for Boston and that is after a change to rain.

  3. i would not mind that at all, it will help limit spring even more, Keep spring at bay and have like 2 weeks of the worst season of them all.

  4. Pattern supports a rare widespread late season snow threat which potentially could bring significant amounts as far south as DC next weekend.

April 8 remains the target date.

    1. What do you make of the swing and miss for us from the 12Z Euro?
Of course, a week for this to adjust, but you must have some thought on it????

  5. Why am I NOT surprised????
12Z Euro had a bing swing and a miss with the 4/7.4/8 biggie depicted by
the GFS and CMC. Takes a sizeable system out South and East of us.
    Surprise, surprise, surprise! NOT!

  6. I feel like were still in winter mode tracking multiple snow chances over the next week.

      1. What a winter that was and still accumulating the snow in April. I remember the morning of April 9th, 1996 the snow blowers were going. I wonder if that will be the case next weekend.

  7. Happy Easter all!

Still thinking a coating to 2” along/south of the Pike tomorrow morning. Maybe some 3” amounts on the grass in parts of CT/RI. Very minor event, but psychologically accentuated somewhat by the fact that we’re into April. Still watching April 8 as well. Much too early for any details there. I see merit to both the GFS and Euro solutions. All we can say is a potential storm threat in that window.

  8. Well, I put out my deck furniture today—hopefully that guarantees us a big snow event next weekend!

    1. Teens and a few single digits. I see what you mean. Whatever precip falls tomorrow will be all snow for sure.

  9. Philip .. haven’t forgotten your request. Just got in touch with someone who has the info.

Oh my goodness. I was going through a keepsake box… the stuff I found weather-related….

There are going to be some interesting photos coming soon.

    1. my grandfather had old video tapes of years passed including some of which of my brothers , cousins and myself, my god, was it embarrassing for all of us lol.

      1. I love finding old stuff…

I never realized how many different things I did. I wrote about 20 songs in the 1980s.

    1. I think there were 2 snowstorms that week, and the first one (I believe on April 2nd or 3rd) was over 7 inches in Boston.

  10. God morning and blah blah blah…..
Big whoopdy doo event today. Hope you picked up the brad and milk.
Euro came north for today’s event. Now showing a couple of inches for Boston. We shall see.

    Euro re: 4/8
    Uppressed city.

follow-up 10th system. Too hot and tight. Oh well. still time..

gfs and cmc re: the 8th. Their wiser cousin , the euro, lectured them and they received the message. Big snow event now suppressed waaay South. So there ya go.

  11. New post!
And keep in mind the accumulation forecast is for generally a coating to 2 inches on unpaved surfaces, not “2 inches everywhere you look.
