Wednesday Forecast

7:22AM

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 4-8)
A brief push of warm air followed by a strong cold front brings a rain showery day today with gusty winds, and drier/colder air with strong winds tonight. A cool gusty wind under bright sun Thursday. Fast-moving pattern brings the next low pressure into the region Friday with cold enough air for a period of snow, ending as rain. Drier air attempts to move in this weekend but another wave of low pressure threatens the region with snow/mix late Saturday to early Sunday. Forecast details…
TODAY: Mainly cloudy. Areas of fog, some dense, during the morning. Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms, a few of which will produce downpours. Highs 48-56 South Coast, 57-64 elsewhere. Wind light variable early, then SW increasing to 10-20 MPH but gusts 25-35 MPH.
TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Isolated rain showers early. Lows 28-35. Wind W 15-30 MPH with gusts 45-55 MPH.
THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 42-48. Wind WNW 15-25 MPH with higher gusts.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Increasing clouds. Lows 25-32. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, diminishing.
FRIDAY: Cloudy with snow of a coating to 2 inches, possibly up to 3 inches higher elevations north central MA and southwestern NH, mainly on unpaved surfaces, changing to rain before tapering off. Highs 35-42. Wind light variable.
SATURDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of mix/snow at night. Lows from the upper 20s to lower 30s. Highs from the upper 30s to lower 40s.
SUNDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of mix/snow early. Lows from the lower to middle 30s. Highs in the 40s.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 9-13)
Active pattern continues with a brief break April 9 then another storm threat, rain favored over mix/snow, April 10-11. The end of the period may see a warm-up but this is always an iffy proposition in southeastern New England at this time of year. Will continue to monitor.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 14-18)
Brief warm-up possible to start the period then cooling back down to more seasonable levels. Will watch the risk for a wet weather event during the second half of the period.

  1. What a lousy forecast for the next 10 days.
A little warmer modeled for end of next week, but what do you want to bet it’s actually a backdoored 45 and misery mist.

  2. Thanks TK. Elevated instability was enough to develop some showers/storms this morning with even a couple small hail reports. Waiting on the front now with howling winds to follow this evening/tonight.

  3. Well, there goes any chance of Julian, Cooks and Gronk being on the same field. Cooks traded to the rams.

            1. AS good as Cooks was, Oh No Mr. Bill
must have thought that there were “catchable” balls left on the field from time to time. No?

              OR it’s the M O N E Y OR a combination.

              1. I was a big Cooks fan…we need a deep threat. I don’t like it myself although he wasn’t overly consistent last year. I just have to hope Bill still has his talent of being several steps ahead of everyone else in his planning.

    1. Cooks was never a good fit in this offense and I never understood the acquisition. He was here to “take the top off the defense” but in reality he was rarely double teamed or considered THE threat on offense by the opposing defenses. Yea he made some good catches and ate up chunks of yardage, but generally a low percentage play guy and his truly impactful plays were few and far between. With the loss of Edelman early, this was even more apparent. My last impressions of him in the super bowl were nauseating, stupidly trying to high jump a defender and running around like a chicken with his head cut off getting knocked out. Glad they moved on from him and hopefully they do something good with the pick.

    1. “could” mean a longer period of snow. We shall see.

NWS is thinking in terms of advisory level snows and perhaps even warning
level for areas well to the West.

  4. Thank you, TK.

A tad froggy out. There were areas near Blackstone Valley CC where visibility was just a few feet.

  5. GFS ……. post Friday afternoon cold front, southern stream system coming further north on 12z run. πŸ™

  6. Wouldn’t mind one more snow event this weekend–especially since I missed the big one in mid March and the snow won’t stick around long.

I think Cooks trade means they feel good about Gronk coming back and they feel good about Malcolm Mitchell’s health. People forgot how solid a rookie year he had and in many ways, he is a better fit for this offense as Cooks (though he certainly doesn’t have the speed, athleticism Cooks does).

    1. I have yet to hear an official statement that Gronk is returning. I would feel better with a tweet from him directly stating that. Every time I see him on tv news he’s putting on some stupid performance on one of those equally stupid reality shows. The newscasters get a kick out of it but I wish Gronk make up his mind once and for all (tv reality/WWE star or NFL pro receiver).

It is painfully obvious Brady is the only “untouchable” on the team. Maybe a good thing, maybe not. We will see.

  7. Love Gronk a lot but I think he has turned me off some as I think he’s gone about this in an unprofessional way big time. If you don’t like it here don’t let the door hit you in the ass. This leaving everyone hanging I think is wrong .

    1. Gronk does a ton of work for charitable organizations and for individuals who are in tough spots. Most sports figures don’t advertise that part of their lives. He has a heart of gold. Perhaps, he is waiting to decide for a reason …..either his or the franchises. It is really difficult to judge something we know nothing about.

      1. And I commend him for that he does a lot for here . But they have him as a wrestler , a stunt man and so on he shouid put an end to these rumors that have been swirling all off season. So I respectfully disagree. We as always can agree to disagree.

  8. Tweet from Eric Fisher an hour ago:

So if you’re keeping score at home, snow chances Friday, Saturday, and Tuesday all on the table. Tuesday still has the strongest overall storm potential.

        1. LOL ……

The weather alone the last several weeks is inspiring me to bring a suit and tie to the Outer Banks on April vacation. If I find a school with a math teacher opening, I’m interviewing. I told my wife I’ll fight the hurricanes, 80F dewpoints and coastal floods. But, I cant take much more snow and cold. Just lasts too long up here.

She laughed at me and told me to have fun living down there alone. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

          I suppose she is correct.

          1. My wife is the opposite. She said if I could find a job down there, she’d move yesterday!

          2. LOL…you would miss the crappy weather up here after some time. Besides, we like to retain the best teachers on the South Shore so you aren’t going anywhere!

          1. I am sure you are getting quite busy SSK. Us South Shore folk apparently don’t like to clean up our own yards. πŸ™‚

  9. Last half of March and the month of April make it really difficult to live here. And especially so for a non native.

    1. My husband is from Jamaica, about as non-native as you can get, and he doesn’t mind it at all. To each his own I guess.

    1. We’re beyond the time of year when it’s just about position. It’s about everything else. That system would likely be wet versus white.

      1. Even you stated likely which is fine. BUT, likely does not
mean certain and I love the fact that you didn’t word it
in terms of certainty. I do understand, but because it is
this time of year, I always am on the look out for surprises.

        Which brings up a question…

For that May 9th-10th snow event in 1977, were any of the Mets
clued in that it actually “might” snow? I do not recall any saying
so. I do remember walking from the Kendal Square T station to
my office in Cambridge at that time thinking in my mind that
the rain would “likely” change over to snow and I “think” it did.
most especially just back from the coast. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

        Your thoughts kind sir

  10. Spring sports athletes here at Middleborough High desperately want to play their games. Many postponements thus far. It’s hard to get enthused about practicing in the gym week after week. I am sure it’s the same about youth sports. Little League and softball in my city are supposed to kick off next week!
Mid-semester exams have been pushed back a week to next Tuesday.
    Snowstorm?
One more snow day and I will starting looking at the retirement portfolio!!!!

    1. The seasons have shifted which isn’t going to help in the future either. But please don’t retire. Our schools desperately need teachers like you and Tom!

  11. 12z EURO at hr 72 seemingly coming further north with southern stream system.

Low yesterday appeared to be in coastal Carolinas, at hr 72 today, it appears to be about 150 to 200 miles further northwest, centered over the Appalachian Mountains.

    1. well, at hr 96, still looks a decent distance away, passing to our east.

Not sure what it has for snow, if any, as I don’t look at EURO snow maps.

  12. We’ve had one outdoor baseball practice so far. Season starts next week. To get in a 10 game season with playoffs before school ends, it has to start soon.

  13. I am WFH today and two people on my street are draining their snow blowers for the season. That’s a gamble but I hope they are right ha.

    1. Well, I first read that as WTF and then tried to figure out where that is. I’m not sure where WFH is either. However, my son in law returned his snowblower to his shop in Ashland and I took all of the frozen bags of water that I kept in the event of a power failure out of my fridge last week. One of us was hoping snow is over and one was hoping to jinx things and have another storm. You can guess πŸ˜‰

  14. We are now to the time of year where unless we get a 4-6-1982 or a 4-28-1987 type event nobody is going to need a snowblower.

      1. I don’t think snow blowers worked very well on that one, but there were plows involved over the interior. πŸ˜‰

            1. Hahaha, yea i usually snow blow paths in the backyard for the dog and theres all kinds of mud and grass flying around

  15. Any idea when this rain will exit Woburn? Hoping I can grill but have a 6-6:30 time limitation.

    1. The precipitation is becoming patchy now and the final rain drops should be gone between 6 and 6:30, but a large amount of time will be rain-free starting at 5:30.

        1. Just keep in mind the wind gusts will be above 30 MPH immediately after the front goes by, which it just did.

            1. I’m either going to Chili’s or a Japanese place in the mall because I get a free meal next time I go there. πŸ˜›

Yes those food court places are actually pretty good!

              1. OK so I have to ask how you get a free meal. Is that the place that sells the tangerine chicken?

              2. I thought malls and food courts went out of style with the great pyramids. πŸ˜‰

And I bet that mall with your free meal will be gone by the end of this current decade. Enjoy while you can TK! πŸ™‚

    1. We used my brothers Ariens until five years ago. I believe if still runs. He bought it in the mid 1960s with money he made from shoveling neighbors.

  16. Channel 7 continues to curse us…

β€œ…once we get past April 10th, snow becomes much less likely and by the 20th almost never happens. Looking long range, I do think after that Tuesday snow chance, we will be done with winter cold and snow and we’ll be onto spring”

  17. 18z NAM drops 1-2” on Friday and 4-8” Saturday across SNE.

18z GFS doesn’t have much for Friday and keeps the Saturday system more suppressed with 2-4” amounts confined to southern CT/RI and the south coast of MA. It does however have a potent coastal storm over the benchmark on Tuesday. That looks like an elevation storm with mostly coastal rain and heavy wet snow confined to the interior higher elevations.

  18. i would love to have morning classes on Tuesday cancelled, I have had it with this one class and the more I miss it the better I am.

  19. Channel 7’s statement is mostly true. Snow chances will diminish considerably after next Tuesday. Furthermore, winter cold will not hang on for long. But, it’s the “on to spring” part which I quibble with. I never feel confident saying “it’s spring” in SNE. Never. Surely, those 70F degree days in February were not spring. I remember at the time thinking it could be a few months before we get back to 70F. And even if it hits 70F at some point this month, a raw period of 40s and drizzle is sure to follow, even in May, and sometimes into early June.

I’m not religious, but I’ve always felt that God’s gift to New England is autumn, while his punishment is spring. Think back to those beautiful days the first week of October when the sun shone brightly, temps were in the 60s and 70s, and the stretch of glorious weather lasted weeks and was about as consistent as weather can be in SNE. That long stretch of weather happens virtually every year. And I’m amazed every year at how predictable it is. The first week of April and sometimes well beyond is almost always the polar opposite: Uncomfortable, dreary, wet, cold/raw at times, and downright depressing. While there are exceptions, I have found most Aprils to be like this. Certainly the first part, but unfortunately sometimes the drearies stretch through much of May, too. It’s why I’ve long suffered from SAD in spring.

    1. But in the rain and wind and snow, there is beauty. Buds on trees are popping out…rebirth. Birds are settling into their summer nests and singing glorious songs of new life. Peepers are as loud this year as I’ve heard them. Even in the fog of this morning there was a feeling of tranquility.

      1. I’m glad you see and appreciate this. I do as well, sort of, as there’s no questioning the fact that a rebirth happens every spring. It’s just not a season for me.

        1. I completely appreciate that. We all see things in different light. It is what makes the world go round

  20. Summer: Travel, biking, hiking, camping, Beach activities. ocean. Pool. Cook outs
Winter. Skiing, snow, holidays, (use to winter hike not anymore)
Fall: ocean biking, hiking and camping. apple picking. Cook outs
Spring.. spring skiing, biking, sometimes hiking depending on the season. Worst one of them all not due to the weather, but due to allergies. Also I do not care what people say. the spring semester of college as well as spring semester of high school was worst than the fall. April through May are the months of hell.

    1. oh also I like fall as well because the lifeguards leave the beaches, and I can go surfing/shore break skimboard during the day instead of needing to wait until after 5.

  21. Good morning.

    RE: Snow
    We “may” just be done.
The Euro has ZILCH for Boston over the next 10 days, although Next Tuesday is close.
Nada for tomorrow and the Saturday system is well suppressed on all models now.

So, maybe, just maybe. We shall see.

    1. He is persistent, isn’t he??

      It’s Thursday already.

I think he may be wrong this time around.

      1. He has had not had a good winter in SNE.

Tuesday is the watch day here.

Media continues to forecast snow in April as if it has identical impacts to January snow.

        1. Media is in the emotion business, not the fact business. It’s a hypocrisy and deriliction.

  22. For Bernie to right I think we need to start to see changes by 0z runs tonight at the latest for his forecast to be right.

  23. 2 very minor or almost non-existent events Friday / Saturday.
A little more concerned with Tuesday than I was yesterday, but not overly so.

    New post!
