Wednesday Forecast

2:58AM

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 11-15)
High pressure dominates today with fair mostly fair weather, but it’s not just that simple in the pattern, even on a “nice” day. Some of you, especially north of Boston, may encounter a dense fog to start the day and some may encounter a very frosty vehicle if heading out early in the day. There may also be a brief pop-up shower somewhere in eastern MA or nearby southern NH or northern RI along the boundary of a sea breeze which will form during the day and push slightly inland. A warm front approaches Thursday and the region briefly enters the warm sector from late Thursday night to sometime Saturday morning before the boundary is forced southward again by building high pressure in eastern Canada, a set-up typical for springtime in New England. By Sunday, low pressure will be approaching from the west, helping to add moisture to the mix as an onshore flow increases ahead of it and south of the high pressure area. Forecast details…
TODAY: Areas of fog mainly north and northwest of Boston early to mid morning. Partly sunny. Slight risk of an afternoon rain shower mainly eastern MA, southeastern NH, and northern RI. Highs 42-47 coast, 48-53 interior. Wind W up to 10 MPH interior but coastal sea breezes.
TONIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. A brief of very light rain or snow possible overnight. Lows 33-40. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.
THURSDAY: Partly sunny morning. Mostly cloudy afternoon. A period of light rain late day. Highs 43-50. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy with a chance of light rain early, then partly cloudy with patchy fog. Temperatures steady 43-50 evening, rising to the lower 50s overnight. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.
FRIDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs 53-59 South Coast, 60-66 elsewhere except 67-75 interior valleys. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY: Partly cloudy except becoming cloudy from northeast to southwest late-day with possible drizzle/fog at night. Lows from the upper 40s to lower 50s. Highs from the middle 50s to lower 60s morning, falling rapidly to 40s northeast to southwest by midday or afternoon, and more slowly to 30s at night.
SUNDAY: Overcast with areas of fog/drizzle and a chance of rain possibly mixed with sleet. Temperatures steady middle 30s to lower 40s.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 16-20)
April 16 (Patriots Day, Marathon Monday) is an important day in the region with a Red Sox game and the Boston Marathon taking place. Based on current timing, a ribbon of rain showers, possibly heavy, will have to cross the region from west to east, but the 2 big questions at this point will be timing of the heaviest rainfall and also whether or not any part of southern New England gets back into the warm air mass ahead of the main cold front from the west. Neither of these questions can be concretely answered 5 days in advance. Expecting drier air to arrive from the west by the middle of next week but a cold pool of air aloft arriving later in the period will bring the risk of some unsettled weather. Temperatures for the period will average generally below normal.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 21-25)
With the tendency for Canada to remain cold, warm air to be suppressed well to the south in the US, and a parade of disturbances transiting from the Pacific to the Atlantic via North America, it’s fair to say that an unsettled pattern and below normal temperatures will continue to be the rule into if not through this period.

  1. Thanks TK !

Cool driving from no fog, good visibility, into thick fog with less than 1/8 mile visibility during a drive that was 2 miles long.

  2. Thanks Tk. I see Sunday is overcast / light drizzle . Does the heavy precipitation hold off most of the day . I have two smaller jobs that I can bang out Sunday light drizzle is fine just canโ€™t do in heavier rain . Thoughts on this

    1. I also have a chance of rain/sleet in there. But at this point I wouldn’t cancel because that’s less likely.

  3. Thanks TK. Continuing to watch the temperatures late week. I remain more optimistic that many places in SNE get into the 70s and 80s on Saturday. Best chance away from the coastline and especially the further southwest you go.

Friday will be a very nice spring day in its own right, and no threat of that one being backdoor’ed. Sunday-Monday though, ugly.

  4. Thank you, TK.

Very heavy frost here this morning. I looked out around 3:00 am and thought it had snowed. My dark car was white and the railings on the stairs, etc. as well as the grassy areas were solid white.

  5. Good morning and thank you TK.

BEAUTIFUL morning. Started out foggy, but watched the sun burn it off.

Saw a nice robin and a cute rabbit in my yard this morning.

Even though it isn’t warm out, it feels rather nice today.

  6. Thanks TK.
Were looking at these temps today as warm. For February with those couple 70 degree days we would be saying its on the cool side.

  7. Blackstone in response to your last comment, I do agree many college students leave once dine, but totally depends on the major and what they want to do. Also many college students move out of the area they went for undergrad so they experience more variation in their studies and contacts for example I’m probably going to leave mass for grad school, could be a totally different country as education is cheaper and more research based than around here

    1. For those interested over seas schools in looking at are In Sweden, the u.k, Australia and a couple in the Caribbean. In the country florida, Virginia north and south Carolina Cali and Maine

    1. I’m not looking for much in the way of a warm season this year. Disappointing. Probably even cooler than last year. Last summer sucked.

  8. I want to see those below normal temps overall in the summer months so we have more pleasant days than those 3 H days.

    1. We get very little summer weather as it is. There are maybe 50 days where it can get hot, other than that, not so much.

  9. I enjoy being able to open up the windows and get the fresh air. The less heat we have we save on our electric bills and I love have more money in my wallet at the end of the month.

    1. I can say the same thing about your cold and snow. Costs me more money to heat. ๐Ÿ˜‰
      Its all relative.
The reality is we get very little summer and usually piss poor at that.

  10. Looks like the MJO is driving this misery. And it looks to go right back around into phase 7-8 again ๐Ÿ™

The plus is the daily temp average is increasing daily. So below normal wont be highs in the 40’s for ever, but it is getting old. Just cant buy a warmer pattern change.

  11. Eric Fisher with a high of 71 for Saturday. Consensus continues to grow for that being a very warm day away from the coastline, at least for most of the day. I expect some 80s. Friday also a beauty everywhere, 60s and 70s. So we’ll get a couple warm and pleasant days in an otherwise cool pattern.

    1. They almost always mis-time those. I toyed with this idea but NAM is consistent in bringing that boundary in rather quickly. It’s already through Boston by 15z on the 18z run today. Makes me nervous. I do think Hartford & Springfield get well into the 70s and somebody does make a run at 80, just not Boston area.

      1. The faster guidance (NAM, ICON) seems to be gradually caving to the slower guidance (GFS, Euro). Definitely a high risk forecast and one where one size will not fit all. It’ll be fun if that front comes through around 18-21z; could see some very quick 20+ degree drops.

  12. People feel cheated by April? It’s payback. April 2017 in Boston exceeded 60 (Logan) half of the month, exceeded 70 on 7 days and exceeded 80 on 4 days. It’s all about the pattern. Warm then, chilly this time.

    1. Yep. I don’t find anything too extraordinary about the pattern this month. On the cool side so far for sure, but nothing unheard of, and we’ll eat into that temperature deficit through Monday. Near normal precip and snow. Pretty typical early April. Complain about the climo, not the pattern.

    1. He can pitch when he is healthy. Problem is: He’s never healthy or at least
not for long. Ho-Hum. What else is new?

  13. What an absolutely spectacular night to sit out. No wind and a light sweatshirt and I was out an hour-ish.

  14. Awesome game. Leg spike by the Yankees, joe Kelley drills his ass, 2 benches clearing brawls. Awesome.
Bring on Thurman Munson and Carlton Fisk.
