  1. Thanks TK. Zero rainfall next 7 days? As North said, looks like just a spectacular stretch of weather.

      1. Good topic, Robert and JPD. A friend mentioned that ocean fishing was slow off the coast of southern maine because the temps were so cold. I wasn’t sure if they were below normal or not. I’m finding around 58 for a temp on some of the bouy sites I checked. Although, I recall someone (TK?Tom?JPD?) saying at one point that certain bouys give a more representative reading than others.

        1. Here is your best site:

          http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/maps/Northeast.shtml

Boston Buoy (16 Nautical miles due East of Boston)

          Water Temperature (WTMP): 57.4 °F

I have seen it 53 Degrees on July 4th
Have also seen it 70 Degrees on July 4th

Loads of variability in those water temps, so the average
          is almost meaningless.

Here is another site from NOAA that gives average water temperatures in 1/2 month increments
For Boston, the average for 6/1 – 6/15 is 61.
Not sure the exact buoy for this site.

          1. Thank you, JPD. I had found the first link but was looking for one that gave average. I recall many July or even August water temps at Humarock that bit your ankles Tom mentioned recently that he was able to stay in without the ankle bite. I also recall some where the water was unusually warm. But that tended to lead to little creatures floating around in it.

          2. So, given this, perhaps the Water temps
are a bit below average, but certainly not by much
            and well within “Normal” range.

See what I am saying there?
We can have temperatures above or below
average, but they are still perfectly normal as
they occur often. How do we obtain averages?
By adding a bunch of yearly temperatures (some above, some below) and dividing to get
            the average.

Take for example the average high temperature for Boston on Jan. 16 which I believe is 36.
Would a high temp of 40 be considered “normal”. Certainly. no? How about 25?
Again, perfectly “normal”, but yet below average.

            1. Ha! That is why I am not fond of the term “new normal.” There is rarely ever a normal…just a rough average.

              Good explanation, JPD!

  2. Water temps are actually where they should be this time of year, should be a good season for several fish species.

  3. Water temps are actually where they should be this time of year, should be a good season for several species of fish that been struggling the passed 10 to 20 years. Think of the gulf of maine as a bathtub. You have the gulf stream coming in from the south but never really makes it passed the continental shelf. The current that does come into the gulf of Maine is a cold water Labrador current but happens to occur off of Novia Scotia. This mixture of cold and warm current is what use to make New England waters so plentiful. Use to be in the top 3. I believe its now 6 or 8. Its towards the stallwagons and georges bank in which these two currents interact. This means it takes a while for the ocean water to circulate out of the Gulf of Maine . The best time for this as well as heat release is during the winter with the storms. Its why we typically see more ” below average ocean temperatures” here in New england during the spring than in fall. so seeing so called below normal is actually good. Especially for our yummy seafood. Also ps, some of my friends been doing a study on mercery levels of seafood here in the Atlantic and the pacific. Just make sure you eat stuff from the Atlantic all I am going to say.

    1. Excellent comment, Matt. Thank you. I’ll pass on to my friend in Maine if you do not mind. Mercury levels may be lower in Atlantic. I think PCB levels are high everywhere. Sadly, fish is not as good for us as it once was.

      1. Sure 🙂
Each the Atlantic and pacific varies as well, PCB levels are high, but there are locations of the atlantic that its not as bad. Due to the Gulf stream coming in from the south, there can be issues but there is also that cold water current that comes from the north from areas that have less industry, so we get a mix bag here in New england. Due to the way seafood is generally process its best safe for woman that are pregnant to stay away from seafood. Despite this, seafood in general is so much healthier than other food. Gives you so much benfit. You also would be surprised on what the human body can do with the PCB and mercery. Also with this being such a hot topic in the seafood business, their are now ways to measure the mercury leve and PCB in the fish before they are killed if its farmed, or hooked. Many of the large predatory fish that these are issues are caught on lines ( tuna, swordfish etc) so this practice can also be done then. When killed, and processed there are also a mercery check and if its not safe, it does not make pass the point.

            1. oh there is corruption thats for sure but its usually not the local fishermen, its usually the darn commercial industry that do not follow the rules and those who fish international waters. These rule breakers have increased lately, I have connections with Noaa fisheries that have said this and been fighting for stricter rules on the international ships fishing in our waters, these were going to go in until the works been stopped. I have more information but will ask people if they are interested to contact me else where.

              1. Absolutely True. But it isn’t the local fishermen who determine levels. Although there are no safe levels of PCBs in humans. We cannot metabolize them.

Let’s move this to FB since it isn’t weather related.

        1. No idea on mercury but remember Mac spent over 30 years testing and analyzing PCBs and writing PCB standards. I’ve said it before here that is in all of our waters ….even the poles. Although he was aware of seafoods benefits, he was adamant about limiting the amount we ate.

  4. Still some pretty cold air aloft today/steep lapse rates. Also a very weak upper level impulse moving through. Combined with just enough moisture and we’ve got a lot of cumulus clouds out there today, as expected. Maybe a spot shower/sprinkle.

    1. I was just out and about and the clouds are fascinating. I think of rainshine on days like today as she enjoys the clouds so much.

      1. I was noticing that. I saw some that almost look mammatus,
but I don’t imagine they actually were. Just resembled it.

          1. These are awesome. Thanks JPD. Last night I saw some that also were close to mammatus but also didn’t think they were.

    1. What I do not understand is that this was a medical reason and he did not play for the rest of the year while taking it. It should not be illegal if its for medical purposes.

        1. But PEDs are not pain relievers. He’s tested negative before but they are not hard to mask. It is curious to be sure

          1. there are certain chemicals that are banned, but there are some chemicals that shouldn’t be when in rehabilitation from a major injury like that. Especially if they do not play while under the influence of it. If Edelmen is going to serve 4 games then Peyton Manning should of seen 6 or 8 games suspended and a bunch of negative press. The chemicals/meds considered not allowed is added onto all the time, who knows we all know how the NFL loves to screw players over, so this drug could of been legal at the time and just recently been added to the list.

  5. with all the noise around this country, a major volcanic eruption in Guatemala. Fuego volcano has errupted twice with some small earth quakes as well. 75 people killed 200 more missing 50ish people injured. Over 12,000 people now with out homes. This volcano also looks to have more activity very soon. There has also been very heavy rains as of late leading to mud slides and toxic chemicals getting into water supplies. Its a mess.

      1. yes it could, but its more the overall increase in volcanic activity in recent months than just one event. Some in more crowded areas others in rather rural areas and not getting as much press.
