Tuesday Forecast

7:24AM

DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 7-11)
Very quick update because 1) there are no changes (again) and 2) I spent too much time in the comment section. Another hot one today as the ridge sits atop the area. Then the long-talked-about eastward slip of the ridge takes place starting later today and onward through late this week, allowing the trough to the west to approach and a front to slowly cross the region. Our opportunity for showers/storms, isolated at first, arrives late today from west to east, and they will be of the scattered variety Wednesday only to become more isolated again during Thursday as we enter the final hours of the window of chance. Another opportunity may present itself in isolated form by later Saturday as another front gets close. “Cold fronts” in this pattern are not going to deliver refreshing dry air, as they are usually at the end of their life cycle and in the process of washing out. So without further ado, here is a detailed forecast very much the same looking as the one before it…
TODAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated thunderstorms mid afternoon on favoring areas well west of Boston. Humid. Highs 82-87 coast, 87-92 interior. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Isolated showers and thunderstorms. Humid. Lows 66-74. Wind light SW.
WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy. Humid. Scattered showers/thunderstorms. Highs 82-90. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Humid. Scattered showers/thunderstorms. Lows 65-73. Wind light S to SW.
THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Slightly less humid. Isolated showers and thunderstorms through mid afternoon. Highs 80-87. Wind W up to 10 MPH.
FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows in the 60s. Highs in the 80s.
SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated showers or thunderstorms possible. Lows in the 60s. Highs in the 80s.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 12-16)
Isolated thunderstorms are possible August 12 and 14, otherwise mainly dry weather and temperatures ending up above normal with more building heat as the dominant high pressure ridge slides back to the west, closer to the Atlantic Coast.

DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 17-21)
Very warm to hot pattern with mainly isolated showers/thunderstorms at times as the Bermuda High remains dominant but some heat from the middle of the US also gets transported via the Midwest and Great Lakes ahead of another advancing trough through this first half of this period. By late in the period this trough may send a more general area of showers/storms through followed by a brief shot of cooler air.

  1. Morning everyone. A quick non weather related question. I have a possible op to go to Antigua late this fall and wondering if anyone has been there in the past few years and what they thought of it. No need to go crazy with details…a thumbs or thumbs down would be fine…thank you.

    1. My dad has gone, he talks a lot about the reefs that are around the island, its also rich with history

      1. Thanks everyone…Snow how long ago were you there? Didn’t they get hit by a Hurricane in the past several years?

        1. A lot of Antigua was very outdated and run down. Aruba is our favorite island by far we have visited. I’ve been to many islands and we’ve decided we are just going to Aruba for any Caribbean or warm weather vacation.

          1. Ok…thanks for the tips…we just may opt for a long weekend in Bermuda. Problem is I have to work it around a couple Pats games that I have tickets for. I guess I shouldn’t worry about problems like that.

            1. I would gladly take your Pats tickets off your hands should there be any scheduling conflicts. πŸ™‚

                1. All you Pats fans πŸ™‚ I love em…but like the Sox and baseball a little more. That’s just me though.

                2. I like the redsox and baseball. BUT football is King. Especially once it hits August, and especially September. Something about the comradery of 11 guys on the field at the same time all having a job to do in 2-3 seconds. The Patriots remind me of the Packers dominance of way back in the 60’s. Patriots might have surpassed them as the most dominant team over 20 yrs in the nfl or even sports. I also respect everyone’s opinion.

  2. Good morning and thank you TK.

I am sick to death of this bull shit weather!!!!

A thought on the Lawrence sensor issue.

Many times when it is going to be hot, the TV Met would always say
warmest in the Merrimack Valley (Translation Lawrence).
Could that possibly be a reference to that sensor that is 2-4 degrees too high.
No wonder that area would be the warmest.

    Just a thought anyway.

Did I say this weather SUCKS!!!!!

      1. We are trying a new approach to cooling the house which is into the low 80s by mid afternoon and more humid than I would expect with AC. We both have our temps turned to 74 rather than 76 to see if we can cool the house early so it will stay cooler later.

And as I type I can only think how difficult it is for all of you who do not have AC if we are having trouble with AC. Mrs. OS, Philip, Joshua, Keith and all others, you are in our thoughts.

        1. The problem is that it has been going on for far too long.
There are 3 rooms that are cool, but one feels caged in and the noise of those damn window units drives one nuts!!!
A prisoner in ones own home.

          It is DISGUSTING!!!

The house cooled all the way down to 81 this morning.
          Nice launching point.
The warmest it got was 93 a few weeks ago.
Yesterday, as bad as it was, it got to 89 in the house.

          1. OMG JPD. That is awful. Although I just looked and I’m at 78 with AC running nonstop. That is ridiculous.

I was talking to my sister in law last night who said it was oppressive in Atlanta. She is not a complainer and has lived throughout this country and the world so understands different climates well. I had said that I missed having windows open. Her reply was that in the southern states, people literally live from one air conditioned place to another. They might spend time in the pool but then rush back indoors.

It is pretty much the reverse of here where people spend time indoors in winter. Sad part is we are now spending time indoors summer and winter here……well, except the nuts who sit outside in winter regardless of temps – I might know one of those πŸ˜‰

            1. Hi Vicki,
Sounds like something may be wrong with your a/c. Have you cleaned the filters recently?

              1. Hi Scott, you are correct. There is definitely something wrong. It was set up incorrectly for the size of the house. But that would mean completely redoing it and that won’t be done until it quits. My SIL manages a heating and plumbing business in Wellesley and does regular filter changes. We added a minisplit upstairs where they put their kitchen. But overall, it is a hot house. Absolutely, no shade and on top of a hill. I spend next to nothing in winter to heat because it retains the heat so well. Sort of like trying to swim upstream. Solar…here I come πŸ˜‰

                1. thanks, Scott. Small potatoes on the scheme of things. We have a way to keep cool whereas many others do not.

      1. My station reads 86. Others around it read 2-3 degrees lower. I’m going with theirs since mine is in direct sun.

DP is 74 and I’ll stay with mine on that.

          1. Hingham stations seem to be reporting in the 83-87 range right now with the outlier being the South School station at 92 (see yesterday’s comment).

  3. Thanks TK
Another SWEATORAMA STICKORAMA or whatever adjective or made up adjective you want to use to describe the weather today. I feel for those who work outside as its been a tough summer with a lot of humid days this summer.

  4. Now this is as bad as it gets in SNE with the dewpoint. Tweet from Phil Burt of CapeCodWeather
80F with a dew point of 77F at Martha’s Vineyard as of 9AM. Gross.

  5. I’m trying a new approach. I’m thinking cooler weather so put all the fixin’s for a chicken tortellini soup into my crock pot πŸ™‚

  6. Any remote guesses to when Canada will realease a cold front to give us some cool and refreshing air? September, October?

    1. A genuine airmass of 70s by day, upper 40s to mid 50s by night with 45 to 50F dewpoints isn’t consistently in sight on the models.

Now yesterday, both the EURO and GFS were projecting a deeper trof in about 10 days to be just north of Minnesota and the western Great Lakes. Behind it was a nice chunk of polar, summer air.

But today, that feature I just described above is much further to the north and this, the summer polar air at about day 10 doesn’t look like it has much of a chance.

The current 95ish, with low 70 dewpoints will ease a bit during the workweek and perhaps a bit more this weekend to help some.

Also, the sun will be dropping behind tree lines on the western horizon earlier and earlier and this should help ac’s cool houses off earlier
      In the evenings.

      1. Thanks, Tom. I have noticed the mornings getting darker earlier, especially since I get up early. And the sun is setting earlier, too. When I was younger the heat and humidity didn’t bother me so much; kind of enjoyed it. Now – not really.

    2. I knew I was leaving an important name out. It was too early this am for my mind to actually work. I do hope you are finding some comfort, Marjie.

  7. While the heat seems about the same today (to me) as compared to yesterday it just feels a hell of lot more humid.

    1. It is. Dewpoints running 2 to 3 degrees higher compared to 24 hrs ago. Heat indices likely running higher than 24 hrs ago.

    2. I hesitate to say that I was out and about last evening quite early and didn’t mind the heat or humidity at all. I am attempting to sit on the deck later at night but my thoughts and the music are drowned out by the chorus of tiny creatures yelling for water πŸ˜‰

Working now so have not been out today. I do know our DP is higher today than yesterday as Tom pointed out.

  8. FINALLY fixed the issue that locked me out of this account via phone. I’m BACK in full admin mode even when mobile. MUHAHA!!

  9. For those wondering when Canada may send a shot of cool dry air. Models don’t see it yet. August 18-24 window… Maybe 1 or 2 days in there.

        1. Works for me. I’ll have to talk to the individual I credit with the two glorious weeks at Humarock in the middle of all of this. His birthday is August 19 πŸ˜‰

  10. I’m feeling retro. I have this sudden urge to play that old board game “Mousetrap”.

    1. I play it with the kids a lot along with Clue and shoots and ladders (not my favorite because I always lose at that). Mousetrap always falls apart in the end but that is half the fun.

  11. Latest HRRR shows a batch of convection NW of Boston Late this evening, Going
POOF before reaching the coast. Figures!!!!

      1. I washed my sheets – does that count as weeding beds πŸ˜‰

Hydrate, SSK, but you know that. I’m glad the air quality doesn’t seem to bother you. Your business is surely taking off also

        1. It’s part of the job in this line of work you need to be mentally prepared for all types of conditions whether a day like today , sub zero conditions, all nighters in the winter etc .

          1. I sure do understand. My brother worked outside starting around age 16 and never minded it. Son works double shifts at least twice a week. You do what you have to do except when it takes a toll physically of course. That is another ballgame altogether.

  12. Currently we are under a Heat Advisory and an Air Quality Alert.

It looks to me as the Heat Advisory “may” need to be upgraded to an
Excessive Heat Warning with Heat indexes surpassing 104.

    1. This is what they are calling for

      * HEAT INDEX VALUES…Afternoon highs in the upper 80s to mid 90s
combined with dewpoints in the lower 70s will result in heat
index values between 97 and 102 degrees.

      We’re already at 101.

    1. Hmmm – guess I should pull the package in that is waiting for UPS on the front steps. Thank you, JJ!

  13. The convection in Central MA is going POOF. Now there’s a surprise.

Relief is just a billion miles away!

    1. Looks like a decent line of showers is taking shape from about Montpeiler down southwest through Albany and on to the Scranton and State College areas….does it make progress eastward???

      1. Ahh, that is the WHW million question.

        My guess …

It makes it to somewhere around or about a line from Hartford to
Worcester to Portland or thereabouts then totally dies
Around 495 or perhaps a bit more East, NEVER making it
to the coast and likely NOT to 128. May not even make it to 495.

        you get the idea.

        We shall see.

  14. re: convection

I am somewhat encouraged y the convection firing in Connecticut.
Perhaps just maybe, some of that gets up into the boston area. I’ll take anything.
Of course In addition to the needed rain, I would dearly love to see a nice cooling
    down draft.

  15. Flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder with heavy rain happening where I am right now.

  16. Just got caught on the highway 495 in a town called uptown. Person was broken down with a state trooper behind causing a 3 mile back up?

      1. Oh that happens everywhere now. Everybody’s gotta take pics of it for snapchat or Facebook. It even happens in Texas AND Antigua, except usually it’s a cattle or horse back up in Texas and it’s a cycle backup of some type on the island. πŸ™‚

          1. Some of my storm chaser videos have shown them getting slowed to 15 MPH behind horse trailers. πŸ˜‰ Usually being pulled by a Texas pickup that has only one cylinder working. πŸ˜‰

    1. Where the bleep is Uptown? Never heard of it. I googled it and it doesn’t
      exist.

As far as I know, 495 does not pass through Upton, which is a MA town, although close.

C’mon snow, spill the beans. πŸ˜€

        1. Just giving you a hard time. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
It’s been one of those kind of days.

Thanks for the confirmation though. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

            1. Lucky Astros pitcher married to Kate Upton …. what’s his name ? It’s Charlie something ….. charlie ….. Charlie Morton. No, that’s not it, got it ! Justin Verlander.

              1. If you stuck with Morton I’d have bought it. I don’t know anybody in baseball these days. πŸ˜‰

  17. The worst thing about recess is when the bell rings and play time has to end. πŸ˜‰

By the way, it’s pretty hot today isn’t it?

      1. That it does. Hmm I wonder if that snow that I put in the freezer is still there or if it dried up and morphed into a rough ball of ice. πŸ˜‰

      2. We would find snow in the middle of manure piles in the heat of summer when the nurseries came to load it in their trucks. It is amazing what manure can do.

            1. Well I’m not sure if it’s the heat for me. I have been battling a flare up of my disease and this is the best I’ve felt in a couple weeks, so my mood is quite elevated, combined with a bit of a snarky feel today. πŸ˜›

    1. I’d like to go on the record by saying if it can avoid this area, I’d greatly appreciate it. Sandwiched between two is enough

      1. Not sure. A friend said he got it

There is an aviation option on the one Emily told me about…..MyRadar

    1. Yes, I have it. It’s just another weather app and it happens to be the weather source for the AcuRite weather stations. It’s not bad.

I am mobile. If you like when I get a chance I’ll post some screen shots. probably tomorrow as I will be tied up for the rest of the evening.

      1. oh btw while in a store I thought of something.

Not sure which version of you know what app you have, but look for a weather forecast option and then look for the select outlet. Choose Dark Sky and you’ll get the Dark Sky forecast for whatever city has been selected.

That will give you a good flavor for Dark Sky.

        Hope this helps.

        1. Oh cool. But I need an update for rhe you know what since I have upgraded my devices and it didn’t carry over

          Thank you

  18. Now the southern part of the line at least is going poof. I would enjoy a run of the mill thunder storm at night

  19. Not sure if anyone is interested, but there is a position at the University of Virginia, for an atmospheric science graduate position. Its more research based, but found it, while looking for grad positions for myself.

    1. Charlottesville is a nice town, with beautiful surroundings, including the Shenendoah mountains and all those Virginia horse farms.

  20. I’m so happy for you Matt. From you’re comments, you will have a 50/50 political view, unlike here. Again we all know this. No offending anyone. I certainly wish you the best in anything you do.

    1. Why is it necessary that you even bring up people’s political views? Also, if “we all know this” then why do you have to say it? Not trying to offend. Just asking. πŸ˜‰

    2. thanks for being happy for me but lets me just make something real clear, I am not 50/50 when it comes to my political views especially when it comes to science. Anyone thats a scientist that believes climate change its self is not real is no real scientist. 98% of scientists say that this round of rapid climate change is due to human activities. The other 2 percent, Oil, coal and gas companies give them money. There are more people that agree with this than there are people that believe in the big bang. With that said, scientists have to go through a rigious set of steps called the scientific method. Part of that is peer review which are other scientists which are the biggest critics, Then the publishers as well. People think scientists are biased but they are not. With that said, TK has said politics are off limits on this blog, so I will keep it from talking anymore about this, If you want to talk, My email is souzamatt12@gmail.com. I don’t bite, I have friends on both sides of the isle. πŸ™‚

  21. Holy smokes are the Sox on fire. Just took a big lead in extra innings.

You know what I’ve noticed? The news is largely ignoring the Pats training camp compared to recent years. Red Sox baseball has everybody captivated. And wow it’s August, before you know it the Bruins will be at camp and pre-season is right around the corner! And you know that that means…earlier sunsets, colder weather, and eventually the first snowflakes. I’m not trying to rush things. Just noting it. πŸ™‚

    1. I been following the patriots, to be honest, the way things are, I would not be surprised if the pats have a 11-5 record, then again there been worse teams on paper, we do need a back up QB that is better, so that we can put him in to rest brady in the 4 quarter when they have a lead. We need another corner other than Rowe. Teams are going to steam role this defense.

  22. Ha! I have a red Sox bottle opener laying around some place…it had a small speaker and it played an audio clip of Trup saying “way back…it’s gone, grand slam!” Whenever it was used. I’ll have to dig that out now.

    1. I think he’s still on the air locally on either EEI or the Sports Hub on weekends once in awhile.

  23. JRW, I still have that bottle opener. Jerry Trupiano was great. After saying “waaaay back!” he says, “grand slam, go crazy folks, the Red Sox win this one.” But, of course “way back” John Wasdin was not so great.

The Red Sox are exceptionally good. To be 80 and 34 is unreal. Being a student of the game I love watching J.D. Martinez hit. He’s Manny Ramirez without the weird stuff. Both men are scientists at the plate, take their difficult craft very seriously, and work hard to improve their hitting every day. The base hit on Sunday against Chapman was a thing of beauty. Martinez’ mechanics are so awesome, keeping his hands back, not over-swinging, using the speed of Chapman’s pitch to his advantage to muscle the ball into right center. In hockey I also love watching players with great technique, finesse, insight. Bergeron and Savard come to mind. Same in soccer. I tell my friends who declare they hate sports but love opera and ballet that someone like Cristiano Ronaldo is essentially a ballet dancer with a soccer ball, except with even more skill and dexterity than Baryshnikov.

The Patriots’ soap opera turned me off. However, in spite them missing some talent, including players they could have kept (I don’t think they’ve even spent to the cap yet), they will be a playoff team and anything can happen after that.

    1. I was very turned off by the soap too. I still love the team and all but I’ll take B’s & Sox first. Celts are good but I’m just not really into the NBA much.
