    1. Sorry – I never thanked you. I got a fair amount read before I had to go to work. Thank you. Will read more later.

      1. Odd – I always get a message if I hit post again for a duplicate comment AND also when I post “too quickly” according to Word Press.

  1. Thanks TK.
As JPDave has already mentioned SPC has us in marginal risk for Friday. Will see what happens when this will be updated tomorrow.
    https://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day3otlk.html

From NWS Boston/Norton for Fri However, a few strong to severe storms also a concern. Deep layer shear is marginal but models indicating a low level jet developing late Fri/Fri evening resulting in 0-1km shear 30-35 kt which is quite impressive and 100-200 units of 0-1km helicity. Given tropical environment and sufficient instability and low level shear, can`t rule out a few strong to severe storms and any storms will have to be monitored for rotation, especially if storms can interact with any boundaries.

  2. Anyone have an inclination of where Ernesto will head? My Uxbridge kids are at disney and will be driving north early next week. Thank you in advance.

  3. I am wondering If the threat for Friday is waning or at least remains to the
West due to timing changes in the fropa????

  4. Schools in Parkland Fla. began today. I would be curious what month southern schools end their academic year in general.

    1. Schools in Charleston, SC, did as well. Atlanta began on the second of this month. Even the dad I spoke to in Charleston yesterday thought that was nuts. He doesn’t quite understand why SC starts so early either. Charleston gets out June 6.

      1. I happened to check the Atlanta school calendar back on August 1st.

They get a week during the Columbus Day holiday.

        A week for Thanksgiving.

2 weeks at the December Holidays.

Feb and April Vacation and get out May 24th.

        180 days.

I like this general idea better. Little shorter summer break with more breaks during the year.

Instead, we give our students 10 to 11 weeks off, wonder why they need a lot of review in the autumn and then cram 180 days into a pretty busy, stressful 9 month calendar.

I’d rather see something like a 5 to 6 week summer break, add 3 to 4 weeks of break throughout the school calendar and spread the school year out. Better retention with a shorter summer break and less stress during the school year with more re-energizing breaks.

        1. Sorry totally disagree with that, reasoning, you teachers will add more crap to the homework over that so call break, summer I crammed that b.s. in 2 WEEKS so I had about a month, home work over x ma’s break pulled 2 days to get that b.s. out the way as well. Class work and homework already takes way to much time as it is, NO More, and get rid of standardize tests

            1. Well the breaks are there. To me, it seems that parents might have more flexibility to take time to be with their kids. A lot of companies are now limited summer vacations for employees. And I agree with you re standardized tests, but that is not the fault of teachers. And they don’t give crap ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. My grandmother grew up in Williamsburg VA in the 1900s (born in 1906) and the school year was from October to April. I highly doubt it is even close to that today.

    1. Interesting, Philip. Maybe around planting and harvesting??

Williamsburg would be a lovely place to grow up I would think. Their school calendar is much like ours although it seems (with a very quick look as I’m off to the Dana Farber meeting) they have winter break and one spring break.

      https://wjccschools.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/2018-19-Approved-Calendar.pdf

This is a fun discussion on a quiet weather day. Thank you for starting it and thank you TK for indulging us as always ๐Ÿ™‚ I do hope you are feeling better!!!???!!!

      1. I looked at a town just east of San Francisco where my brother in law lives (I’m going to be late for my meeting but you have me curious). They start August 22 and end June 7. Didn’t have time to check vacations but that is difference since they clearly do not have the heat of the south to be worried about.

  6. The school calendar I would like. First day of school day after Labor Day. Thanksgiving week 2 full days of school Mon and Tues which will give Wednesday for families who are traveling for the holiday a full day to get to where they need to get to before Thanksgiving Day. Now in CT there is SBAC testing which begins in March and goes into April. When SBAC testing is over 5 day break. No week off for February vacation but rather just a long weekend for Presidents’ Day. If you eliminate the full week you could get out sooner in June especially if the winter does not have a lot of snow like the winter of 11-12.

    1. Oddly, Sutton has the same policy for Feb break but still gets out when Uxbridge (who has two weeks) does. I think it is Uxbridge who is having two of the teacher learning days prior to the start of school rather than during the year. That way kids start after Labor day. Not positive it is Uxbridge but know one town has moved to this plan.

      And now I’m late ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. If I may chime in….IF I had to go to school in the Summer, I would have quit or ran away. NO ONE would EVER make me go to school in the Summer. That’s my TIME!

    1. If anyone made me go back to school now, I’d run away. I was not a fan of school. Although, oddly, I went every year for summer school math. I took the course that I’d be having in the fall. And I enjoyed it. But then math was the ONLY course I enjoyed ….once I figured it out

    2. My issue with academic calendars in general is the intense heat/humidity that occurs in most locations on both ends of the school year. I went to private school my last 3 years of high school and their calendar was from September to May.

      1. Did you go to math summer school because of your grades? If so, sorry to hear that Vicki. I believe you mentioned in earlier posts that you had a mean math teacher?

        1. Not because of grades but because I was frustrated I couldnโ€™t grasp it. I did have some not good teachers but my personality is to try and figure out what is difficult. My senior year in high school, I finally had a teacher that didnโ€™t criticize me. I adored him and oddly most kids made fun of him because he was unique.

      1. You’ll have to toughen up if you want to be a New Englander. Walk right in. ๐Ÿ˜‰

        1. 76 is bath water!!! Crap, I have no problem with 66.
I have even handled 56, but do NOT like it!!!

Coldest I have actually swam in was 53 at Nauset Beach
one Summer. Must have been a crap load of upwelling.

Falling through the ice doesn’t count, as I have handled
that a few times. Water that cold almost gives one
a burning sensation rather than feeling cold. I actually
never minded the cold water when falling through the ice. And I got plenty wet. ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

            1. Of course, what do you think?
We needed to play hockey, safe ice or not!!

btw, the last fall through, I was 30 years old. I forgot my meteorology or my biology or combination. The ice was safe enough, however, I decided to skate near an island that had way too much vegetation in the water right up to ice level.

I completely forgot that the plant growth would cause the water to be warmer and
thus the ice would not be as thick!! DUH!!! I should have known better!
Luckily for me the water was only waist deep, but it did make it difficult for me
to get back onto sound ice, which I did. ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

        2. Lol Iโ€™m definitely not a new englander, however it goes both ways. I can deal with 95 degrees.

    1. Thanks for sharing Jimmy. If that outbreak occurred today, it would have been extremely devastating with many deaths to say the least.

  8. Hi all…

I don’t think that’s a quality blog up there but I promise to make a much better one tomorrow. May make a few adjustments as I am studying the pattern very closely. It’s not just the autoimmune right now, but the heart is also in a very active phase again, probably because of internal blood loss from the autoimmune. They can feed each other. ๐Ÿ˜› First time I’ve ever had a-flutter cutting right through my emergency medication. But I’ll beat it. I will never let these things get me. How defiant? I’m going to Hampton Beach this evening. ๐Ÿ™‚ Cheers!

        1. No. Humidity itself does not have any significant impact on me outside of the typical restrictions on cooling yourself, but I have a very high tolerance for heat & humidity. This is strictly my immune system attacking parts of me as well as my expanded genetic heart condition being in an active phase. They can coincide and become partially related. It does suck but it’s also not nearly as bad as it could be. My lack of panic and my positivity are a big part of what gets me through these episodes. I’ll be up walking at Hampton tonight, maybe just a little more slowly than my average. ๐Ÿ˜‰

          1. you have this TK because you know the key…one day at a time and always be positive. You have many praying for you and dare I say many from above doing the same

    1. Hey TK, let me say this for all.

You have NEVER posted anything but a QUALITY BLOG!!!

      Get that straight!!

  9. 18Z NAMs fairly bullish for severe weather on Friday.
Soundings reveal a tornado threat right to the coast, but these are usually
way over-cooked. In any case, needs to be watched.

    1. The only reason this is the case is because at 3PM I’ll be on the road to sit in traffic on my way to Mansfield. ๐Ÿ˜›

            1. Me too. I had to put my hummer feeder away because of them. Now the hummers hovee outside my slider and glare at me

    1. Hate to see it but Itโ€™s there territory. Man is supposed to be smarter. Doesnโ€™t always show

  10. TK…feel better real soon!
    I am a Mansfield Hornet!
In fact, we had our 40th class reunion this past Saturday night!
    MHS Class of 1978!

  11. I have an environmental question for y’all.
In fact, Matt, you might know this…

What is red tide? I have heard two reports and was speaking to a classmate of mine Saturday night about the red tide algae (is it an algae?) on the west coast of Florida. It is causing major damage to fish and shellfish, not to mention the stink of the rotting fish is ruining summer vacation for many.

If it is an algae, could there be something that could kill or dissolve it? It seems that science could do something about the red tide. I am not a scientist by any stretch of the imagination, but I know one has to be careful of the balance in nature.

Matt, I know you study the ocean. I was wondering what y’all thought about this.

    1. We have had red tide closures here for years. I am actually surprised there hasnโ€™t been one this year. Matt?

  12. Non related weather- Sam Adams has been a Boston tradition, however from cnn Iโ€™m watching that Democrats are boycotting Sam Adams? Iโ€™ve seen and read in many spots.

    1. I guess because they say trump has done a speculator job. Iโ€™m not trying to start a political debate, just facts on it. Iโ€™ve heard and have read this is many online, and other places.

      1. Hahaha. The fact is that Sam Adams is being boycotted. Nothing else you stated is fact. And peaceful protest is one of the foundations of this country. Iโ€™m curious as to how your comment can be construed as anything but political.

    2. I boycott all beer. It has nothing to do with politics, which I don’t allow on here. It has to do with the fact I hate beer. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  13. was looking at the wrf vorticity generation parameter for fri into sat. pretty interesting.
.3 to .5. anything .2 or above is cause for cocern. we shall see what 0z run has to say.

  14. When the latest run of the SREF comes out will see what it has to say. A good short range model on picking up areas where there could be a potential tornado.

  15. Ok 4 things.
    1. With the Beer talk, gotta be a Corona, but I like Tequila and Vodka mix drinks drinks, and wine. ? I do not think its being banned lol despite the fact that I hate that beer.
    2. There are certain people that do not deserve to have twitter or influence Because they are stupid, dangerious and the worst people on earth. I will leave it at that. Trump has done a good job in doing the opposite of doing a good job. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    3. to answer peoples questions on red tide. Red tide is not just one type of algae. its a whole phylum called Dinoflagellata. We could do something about it, There is so much we could do, but it costs $$$$, You can get algae eating bacteria/microbes, but only certain algae can work and that can lead to its own problems. Prevention methods are always cheaper than clean up, no matter what, its why I find it hilarious people (*&^ about regulations. They forget that the clean up and situation costs business, government and US as in you and me more money. The mess in Florida is more than just one thing, there are multiple things going on. the Florida governor sucks, the republican in charge lets the large plantations to dump a large amount of chemicals, especially Phosphorus and Nitrogen. The areas affected by the red tide, are areas that recieved this dump water. These areas are also seagrass habitat for the most part. These chemicals red tide absolutely loves these chemicals. There is always Dinoflagellata in the water but the issue is the concentration. Human pollution increases the food source. Red tide can also be a cynobacteria. Its also not just red but brown, green, purple, black, brown and red.

  16. TK mentioned that the outlook is due out today, not sure which organization it is, NOAA? Can anyone point me to the correct link?
