  1. Thank’s TK- I hope you enjoyed the weekend. It seems to me we have had more cool labor day weekends than hot, this weekend was a nice change. I like the fact that the days still warm but cool nights.

    1. I seem to remember it as about 50/50, maybe even a tilt toward warmer ones in the last 20 years overall. But I’d have to verify that. Either way, this was a nice one pretty much start to finish in eastern New England.

Parts of western and northern New England got wet yesterday & western New England again today of course.

      1. I just need to go in tomorrow and than I am off the rest of the week. I do not really care what the weather does this week. I do need to clean my pool though before they come and put my cover on.

          1. I will. I think the weather will be crappy till Friday which is good. My wife will be working on Friday so I am free to do the yard stuff. I just hope they do not want to put the pool cover on before Friday. I do not feel like cleaning It in the rain. So many leaves in it from the storm. My pool is surrounded by trees.

  2. It was a humid weekend overall, but today the humidity was quite “fierce”…it really hit me. I was just outside putting out the trash for tomorrow and I was sweating big time afterwards. I had some very quick yardwork to do this morning and I felt like I had been out there for a couple hours even though it was not even 10 minutes. I sweat easily anyway but still….

Anyway, I am glad that I had my BBQ yesterday instead of today. Not only was the humidity worse, but the wind was stronger and I had enough trouble getting the fire going yesterday as it was.

I agree John, it seems back when I was a kid, Labor Days were usually on the “cooler” side…the way I like it always. At the same time, I don’t recall even recent Labor Days so humid like today. Oh well, at least Columbus Day weekend won’t be HHH…that’s for sure.

    1. Philip- As a kid growing up in Marshfield It did seem like every labor day weekend It was cool and overcast. I hated that weekend because some of my good summer friends were heading back home. I just remember It not being good beach weather, and some folks would head home sooner.

  3. TK- How can Tuesday be cool and humid at the same time, I am just curious. Please by no means Is this meant to be rude.

    1. Because humidity and temperature are unrelated, by definition. It can be both cool (air temp) and humid (very moist air). I am one of the only met’s that use those 2 together, but I firmly believe in it.

        1. If it’s cool enough, I will tend to use the term “damp” instead of “humid”. There can be a fine line there.

  4. TK I just had a feeling we were not through with 90 degree temps for 2011. If we get one more I believe Tom will be right with his prediction of 14 90 degree days for Boston. Before too long will be making guesses for first frost and first measurable snow.

    1. I think we have 2 shots at 90+ left for Boston. I think 1 will make it, and the other will fall just shy. Still looking at around Sep 12 & 21. I know this is a Henry M. style prediction but I’m going to have fun with it. 🙂

    1. Coastal I am excited for our first snow!! I love when it first snows for tje SEason!! I can smell it in the air when it’s gonna snow, I know weird:)

      1. I also can note a particular scent in the air just before a snowfall, which I enjoy very much. Sure is weird to be able to smell the snow before it happens.

      2. Hadi my family laughs at me when I say it feels and smells like it’s going to snow. I also love the first snow and every one thereafter. I can’t believe we are talking about snow though – not because I don’t want it but because time sure does go by too quickly.

        1. It get’s old real fast when you work snowstorms. call’s in the middle of the night, missed holidays and entire weekends. Yes good pay but gets old.

    2. I assume you mean for Boston?

Light frost: October 16, earlier in the suburbs.
Killing frost: October 16 suburbs, October 30 Boston.
      First snowflakes: November 6.
      First measurable snow: November 28.

  5. We shall see what happens this winter. I would go above average snowfall but not ready to commit to anything until I see how our pattern is shaping up!!

  6. I’ve been talking to a few colleagues and the consensus is above normal snow, heaviest 1st half of winter, cold start, mild finish to winter for near normal temps overall.

  7. An early first frost/freeze would be wonderful to get rid of the mosquitoes and the triple EEE concern that always seems to be prevalent in the interior south shore towns.

Marshfield was cruising along at 73F all night, until the north wind kicked in a few hours ago and suddenly its 61F. With clouds and dampness, I wonder if this is going to feel like a shock to the system ?

24 to 29 inches of snow at Logan is my very, very early guess for the winter…..Happy Tuesday all !!

    1. By this time with the West Nile and the EEE I always look for the first killing frost. I notice that the mosquitoes are far worse now than they were before we left for vacation.

We also lost power last night. It hadn’t been raining for more than 15 minutes. It surged four times with flashing light outside and some nasty grinding noises. It was a bit unnerving.

      1. Hi Vicki,

Honest truth, as I type here in the house, there is a mosquito attacking me. 🙁 My kids and their open doors. 🙂

  8. Hi, all – I hope everyone had a great Labor Day. We went to a friend’s barbecue in Concord. It was fun but very humid – but the breeze helped make it tolerable.

Since Irene, my computer has been very unhappy. It kept freezing up. My husband, who is the computer person, has tried to fix it. We thought it was virused, but it wasn’t. He then “de-fragged” it – and so far, that seems to have helped.

Our lights went out briefly twice early this morning. I am definitely looking forward to autumn, now! Looking forward to the crisp and frosty mornings and hopefully a lot of sunny days!

    1. Hi Rainshine – I was wondering if you were having computer or power problems since you have not been on. I’m glad you enjoyed the BBQ and that the computer is working. We lost power again at 8:00 and got it back just a bit ago. I ran into a man from Sudbury while getting ice who said Sudbury had lost it in the night but not again this morning. I suspect this morning’s was planned to get everything back online.

  9. Hope all had a great Holiday Weekend. My computer was out of commission the entire weekend. Still not up and running. At work now.

Great news on Katia. TK called that one!

    Have a good one.

    1. Well as I work down the comments I am glad to see you too Old Salty – I had also noticed you were missing. Hope the computers get their problems solved. I have been unplugging mine when I don’t use it since the surges seem to have been particularly bad.

  10. We like it when those storms take that right turn and stay over the fish.
Another tropical wave for out in the Atlantic with a 70% chance of developing. If that gets a name it would be Maria

    1. I am chuckling JJ because your comment brought back a nice memory. My in-laws had a dear friend who was a captain out of Charleston for one of the SeaLand ships. His wife and he are no longer with us but I remember when someone said the storm was going to stay over the fishes, she would say “well, that is not good news – my husband is out there too!!!”

  11. Speaking of “Maria”, Henry Margusity mentioned in his morning discussion that if the trough sets up near the Tennessee Valley, Maria should head OTS like Katia, but if the trough sets up near the Mississippi Valley…the east coast should watch out!

Let us hope for scenario #1…I have more than had my fill of hurricanes and tropical systems in general, and I want summer to end ASAP.

    1. You know, Philip, ordinarily I would kind of disagree with you. I sometimes get kind of sad when summer is over. However, not this year. Although I like tracking thunderstorms and summer severe weather – after the Springfield tornado, heat and humidity and tropical systems – I will be happy to see the bright colors of autumn and feel the chilly days. And the thought of snow and talking about snowstorms doesn’t seem so bad to me right now! I’m guessing that sometime in late Feb. or March of next yr. I’ll start hoping for spring and summer again! 🙂
