Lots going on in the weather department these days: Irene not long ago, flooding resulting from it in western New England, tree damage eastern areas. Other heavy rain episodes resulting in additional flooding, including in some eastern areas the last few days, associated with the remains of Lee. The big deluge for the Boston area was this morning and if you were in the Boston area, you knew it. It caught me a bit off-guard, since I didn’t forecast it quite that heavy. So if you were stuck in it, and not as prepared as you could have been based on my forecast, sorry! Hope you keep coming back to read anyway. I have my share of forecast misses, and this was one of them.
What’s coming up? We are about at the end of the unsettled stretch, but it will be a little slow to improve through Friday as I think we may still see a fair amount of cloudiness through Friday. In fact, clouds may be stubborn over far southern New England for much of the weekend as high pressure builds north of the region and a disturbance and old frontal system sits just to the south of the region. We may have a return to a more summery feel by early next week as high pressure slips to the south of us and sends warmer southwesterly winds in.
Katia? No hurricane here, but the storm has stirred up large waves and big ocean swells offshore which are already affecting the coastline, and will continue to do so through Friday, and possibly into the weekend, before subsiding. There may not be a great deal of calming of the ocean as yet another tropical system (Maria) is out in the Atlantic already stirring up the waters once again. We’ll talk more about Maria’s possible path in future posts. And don’t forget about Nate in the Gulf of Mexico (no immediate impact on the US).

Thank’s TK- Even the best mets like yourself miss one from time to time.
If it wasn’t for this ugly stretch of weather, we would be preparing for a hurricane right now…
Getting some breaks of sun right now.
Thanks for update! Miserable day out in Thompson island:(. They at least sent us home at noon so got a half day off out of it.
What’s funny is that it improved a little probably after you went home. 😉
I know I told them that it would but everything was soaked and miserable out there
The rain was way heavier this morning and way more widespread than I thought it would be. I figured scattered showers, isolated downpours for a few hours, not the deluge that basically went from dawn to almost noon. 😛
I went with a worse case scenario for them, much easier to be wrong the other way:)
Very true…
Maria is expected to remain a Tropical Storm through early next week. I have a feeling that she will be an issue for the east coast at some point down the road. It will be interesting if Maria ever strengthens into a hurricane…hope not.
Nate seems to have a somewhat more northerly track now — only yesterday it was forecasted to take a sharp turn west into Mexico.
Tropicals buried deep in the Gulf are harder to forecast (track-wise) than anywhere else in the Atlantic Basin.
Just caught the moon shining occasionally through the low clouds…..looking forward to seeing some sun tomorrow !!
TK no apologies please. I don’t think there is anyone here who does not understand that you do a terrific job 🙂
Thanks Vicki. 🙂
I was at the sea wall in Lynn this evening. Observed the swells generated by Katia. They were rolling in about every 12 seconds and with 3 to 5 large swells followed by a quieter period. Some of the larger swells hit the sea wall with enough force to splash 30 to 40 feet up at one of the spots that bows out slightly (my favorite spot to watch from). Had to run backward about 15 feet a few times to avoid getting covered by seawater. Fun stuff. Moon was out while I was there, looked nice shining off the water…
Nate is back to a forecasted westerly track — at least right now — and looks like it will hit Mexico as a hurricane. Not pretty.
I bet the forecast track changes at least 3 more times before we see where the thing tracks. The upper winds are weak enough that Nate could mill around for days in the southern Gulf…
NOAA update on La Ninia

Hadi, thanks for this valuable piece of information…this could help me alot with my snowfall prediction. Up until now, I have been struggling on which way to go. Most of the time, I at least have a pretty good idea by now, even if I end up completely wrong…as I was last year, lol. 🙂
So does this mean we could have a ton of snow again.
Its too bad we can’t get rain into Texas from Nate based on the current track. Hopefully that changes.
I’ll echo johns question. Does the report mean we will have a lot of snow??
And on a personal note I am at newton wellesley hosp with my oldest daughter who is 10 weeks pregnant and just got to watch her ultrasound. They think it’s a little girl but won’t be sure until the 5 month ultrasound. They were right at this point with her two and a half year old 🙂
Hi, Vicki – How wonderful modern technology is! And what a wonderful experience it must be to see the ultrasound of a new baby! My husband and I were never lucky enough to have children – but that was what was supposed to be, I guess. Anyway, whether it’s a girl or boy, he/she will be a treasure.
And – what a delight today turned out to be. Beautiful blue sky and sunshine – we all need that for sure. This morning I took my husband to a cataract dr. in Waltham – he will need cataract surgery in Oct. One thing I noticed as I was driving east this morning is that I could see the outer clouds of Katia. We were lucky that we missed her.
Sorry to hear the news on your husband rainshine.
Thanks, John. It’s a relatively common procedure, I hear – but then, any medical procedure is never easy! (I get nervous going to the dentist! 🙂 )
That’s great Vicki. Congrats on another grandchild, I do believe you have said before you already have some.
I guess I read It to fast- LOL.
One thing I look at besides El Nino and La Nina is the temperatures in October and November. When they average below normal that tends to lead to a colder and snowier winter. When they average above normal we tend to have a mild winter with below normal snowfall. Another thing is snow cover in Siberia.
Best wishes to your daughter Vicki…..
Love the sunshine and warmer temps…..
I am thinking lower than normal snowfall 24 – 29 inches……..More neutral to positive NAO this winter than last winter and the southern Jet Stream not providing much winter precip because of La Nina and the drought in Texas. I know this sounds foolish given the recent east coast deluge, but I think the moisture source is going to relax once the tropical season winds down.
Thanks, Tom and thanks Rainshine
It is a great afternoon. I can’t wait to get out on the deck. I feel as if it’s been forever. Rainshine, that must have been cool seeing the outer bands! I am sorry your husband needs cataract surgery though.
Thanks, Vicki – my husband has had some medical issues through the years but for some reason he is kind of scared about this. I have heard cataract surgery is very common, but I guess when it comes to the eyes, it can be nerving.
Yes, the sky was very picturesque this morning. But knowing that the clouds were from a hurricane made it kind of exciting – I guess you have to be a weather-lover like all of us on this blog to really appreciate the sky! 🙂
my father in law put the surgery off for years. He had it when he was in his 80s and it was far easier than he had expected. Afterwards he could see so well that he kept saying he should have had it earlier. I can understand why your husband is nervous but I have heard so many great stories of how it has made a huge difference
Tom I would welcome that, I really would. The snow causes me problems at work, believe me it does.
New blog!
