Saturday Forecast

7:53AM

DAYS 1-5 (MARCH 23-27)
A little spring surprise for some locations in southern New England, namely central CT which had a persistent and fairly heavy band of overnight snow dump up to around 6 inches of snow over a fairly small elevated area. In one of those events nearly impossible to accurately forecast, we had a nearly stationary band held in place as it tried to move east by an expanding low pressure circulation hundreds of miles away, enhanced by an upper level disturbance and some lower level convergence not very well forecast by guidance, in at atmosphere slightly colder than forecast, at a higher elevations, and occurring during the dark hours instead of March daylight, which would have pretty much cut it in half, if not more. So there you have it. The rest of the region pretty much came in as expected, but the 1-3 inch amounts in higher elevations of northern RI, central MA, and southern NH was a late addition to my forecast after the initial wording that did not include numbers. In any case, with the exception of the areas that had over 3 inches, just about all of the snow will be vanishing during the day today and any left will be a memory by the middle of the day tomorrow, although today’s weather may not feel too much like snow melting weather as it will be blustery and chilly and even though we start out with lots of cloudiness and lingering snow showers, eventually dry air will work in and sun will increase. The expected warm-up for Sunday will occur but it will still be on the breezy side, though not nearly as windy as today is. Looking ahead, the cold front expected for Monday which had uncertain timing appears that it will be occurring on the earlier side, so the mildest part of the day will be very early and then the temperature should go down. It doesn’t look like the front will carry much more than cloudiness and just some light rain activity with it, and it will be well south of the area by Tuesday and Wednesday keeping any storminess moving along it from reaching this area, helped out by Canadian high pressure which will bring dry but chilly weather. Forecast details…
TODAY: Mostly cloudy morning with lingering but diminishing snow showers with little additional accumulation. Increasing sun afternoon. Highs 45-52. Wind NW to W 15-25 MPH with gusts 35-45 MPH this morning, diminishing slightly this afternoon.
TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 25-32. Wind W 10-20 MPH with gusts 25-35 MPH, diminishing slightly overnight.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows 37-44. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY: Mostly cloudy with scattered light rain morning. Clearing afternoon. Highs 45-52 early then falling back through the 40s. Wind NW 5-15 MPH with higher gusts.
MONDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 25-32. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY: Sunny. Highs 38-45. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 25-32. Wind light N.
WEDNESDAY: Sunny. Highs 45-50 coast, 50-55 interior. Wind light E.

DAYS 6-10 (MARCH 28-APRIL 1)
High pressure shifts south and southeast of New England and allows a warmer southwesterly air flow with fair weather and temperatures warming to above normal March 28-30, into March 31 but will have to watch for an approaching cold front from the west by then for its timing and potential to bring rain showers. It will be cooler in typical areas (Cape Cod, South Coast). By April Fools day, expect cooler conditions and a return to fair weather.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 2-6)
Cooler weather for the early days of April with a couple periods of unsettled weather likely.

  1. Thanks TK.

I checked the updated PIS measurements as of 7:44 AM and Logan wasnโ€™t listed. Not even Suffolk County. Maybe more observations will come later.

Or maybe Logan received a lousy trace? We will see.

  2. Thanks TK for the great explanation :re last nightโ€™s surprise snow event in NE CT. Here are the snow totals from the NWS:

    https://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=NWS&issuedby=BOX&product=PNS

Private snowstorm for us in Tolland County! Canโ€™t believe the NWS dropped the advisory.

What surprised me most was how dry and powdery the snow was, leading to near blizzard conditions at times

Driving up I 91 from Hartford and now central MA no snow at all and bare roads.

    1. He took a chance with the HREF. He likes that model. It can get these little events right once in a while, while it blows a lot of events badly. If you happen to guess when it’s right, then it looks great… Kind of like picking the right upsets in the NCAA… ๐Ÿ˜‰

I got a 12 & 13 to win for me last night in the same section of my bracket. ๐Ÿ˜‰

        1. You did say earlier you’d be happy with one more snowfall. You got it. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Nice dumping Mark! Probably the last harrah of the season. You deserve it since you got skunked during the March storm last year. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Tracked so many cyclones in that part of the world in my agricultural forecasting gig!

  3. Thanks, TK…
    Happy Weekend, everyone…

TK…meant to tell you how awesome those pix are of the full moon and the basketball hoop. Super creative!

    1. I can’t claim the idea as totally original. It had crossed my mind in the past and I never had the opportunity to try it, but I have seen this done with the sun before. I’m going to attempt my own sun version but I’ll need a hazier sky for that.

  4. CPC’s updated 6-10 / 8-14, one-month, 3-month, and seasonal outlooks all carry no surprises at this time. In the medium to long range heading through spring, the overall trend is warmer than average and a continuation of the recent drier trend. And yes it can still precipitate in a drier trend, like what we just went through. ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. It’s March 23, not April 23. We can still snow. This doesn’t change year to year.

  5. Thanks TK.

My part of Sutton had maybe an inch. Perfect spring snow. Looks awesome but doesnโ€™t cover pavement. Mother Nature did the shoveling

  6. Pretty windy out there. took a walk at Millenium park. There were white caps on the Charles River. Even so, it was beautiful out there. very comfortable, for me anyway.

  7. Thanks TK.

That โ€œprivate snowstormโ€ last night in parts of Tolland County is among the more unique weather events Iโ€™ve seen happen in New England. Sometimes coastal areas can get something like that due to ocean effects, and of course the very high elevations see that all the time, but for such an unassuming geographic area, that was wild.

  8. I a remember a November event a couple years ago in the Northwest Hills of CT got a private snowstorm but don’t remember one in the Northeast Hills of CT.

    1. I get the impression that when it comes to late season snows in CT, it is either feast or famine. Nice photos!

      1. That can happen late season anywhere in the Northeast. It just happened to be CT this time.

  9. Thank you, TK.

Spring and fall have reversed roles, as this spring’s North Atlantic storms continue to batter coastal, Western Northern Europe. Some of the powerful lows traverse the far Northern Atlantic and wind up making landfall in Scandinavia. Others have taken a more southerly track and cross the British Isles and then the low countries.

    1. I actually drove by one of those “spring is here” signs in southern NH … in the middle of last summer. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  10. Watched a new Netflix movie today called Mirage.
It is a Spanish movie that was very very well done. It did not have subtitles, but
rather was Expertly dubbed in English. Best dubbing job I have ever seen.

It is kind of a mix of Frequency, Heaven Can Wait and a healthy dose of the twilight zone.

For a Sc-Fi Geek, I would HIGHLY recommend it. If you are not into this kind of stuff,
then you may still enjoy it for it’s thriller nature as well.

  11. I thought of Mark but perhaps others have Been to the Clark Museum in Williamstown. Son just sent some photos from a trail system through their woods and pastures. What a lovely area.

  12. Woke up this morning to a heavy coating of snow on everything but the pavement. I had a decent amount on the truck that needed to be broomed off . Great day for doing estimates Iโ€™ve been in pembroke , Marshfield & Scituate today with good outcomes. More tomorrow & working on the shop.

    1. I just realized I have no idea what it is you do for work ssk even though you talk about work a lot lol

      1. Dr stupid I work for a Boston hospital Engineering Dept as a groundskeeper & I do landscaping very successfully on the side . I have been with the hospital 26 yrs

      1. Itโ€™s not. I figured out what it was almost as soon as I finished posting. I will let others see if they know though before posting the answer.

    1. That’s the newly done-over Fore River Bridge in Quincy (pronounced Quinzee if you live there). ๐Ÿ˜‰ Colored LED’s + a stratus overcast = EISO’s (eventually identified stationary objects).

The aurora cannot be seen through overcast and is usually never blue.

            1. Since it is named for him. KWINSEE.

Impossible to hear the difference. Although there is Meffud

  13. As I figured, Logan received a mere Trace. ๐Ÿ™

    still 27.4โ€ to date…oh well. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. That is an effin Joke!!!@

I posted a photo of what it looked like in JP.

The logan.observer probably measured at 11am when it was all melted.

  14. Warning: Rant.

Why the hell do cruise ships venture into WELL KNOWN paths of major storms during the season that they are most likely? I mean are these cruise ship companies really that stupid? Nevermind answering. The answer is YES, stupid AND greedy.

Let’s cruise into the path of major storms and into wind gusts of 75 to 100 MPH with waves up to 50 feet. Ya. Smart. It’s not like these storms haven’t been traveling the SAME DAMN AREA for CENTURIES.

    Unreal.

    1. Good rant. You literally could not pay me to take a cruise. And Mac who travelled yearly in the Stockholm way back in the day and others and sailed the Mediterranean very summer said the same.

      1. ditto ditto ditto.
Wife and I feel the same way.
She had her own rant about this cruise ship.

  15. It was a very windy day today at Sunday River. Bad part, half the MTN was closed all day and another quarter was closed then open then close throughout the day. Advantage, people were having difficult time getting on the MTN in some areas so there were some nice groomers. Some hard and icy but others nice and fluffy. Some areas had the snow taken off and it was icy, your in POW as the wind blows the snow into different areas.

Overall it was a great day, will have some video and photo’s up on my facebook/twitter and will post a couple on here with imgur.

      1. It was a beautiful moonrise. I didn’t get any photos tonight but I did get a nice view of it while outside for a short bit. ๐Ÿ™‚
