DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 26-30)
The final 5 days of April, a month that has been frequently unsettled but mild, will continue the unsettled pattern but start to tilt the temperature scale to a lower level as we see cooler weather overall. The unsettled weather will be here today in the form of warm frontal rain morning and midday and cold frontal showers and possible thunderstorms later today and especially tonight. As low pressure intensifies while moving into eastern Canada, the back side will bring blustery weather for Saturday with a gusty wind, cool air, and although most wet weather will be gone pre-dawn, there still may be a passing shower triggered by cold air aloft. Often times after a day like that, high pressure would settle in for nice weather the next day, but not this time. Another, albeit smaller, low pressure area will come racing along for more unsettled weather Sunday, and it may end up cold enough Sunday night before the precipitation exits that it may end up mixed with some frozen stuff in areas north and west of Boston, especially higher elevations. This will then lead to the only really nice day in the 5-day forecast period, Monday, which will feature plenty of sun which will feel nice even though the air will be on the cool side. A warm front will be moving in by Tuesday with more clouds and potential wet weather.
Forecast details…

SUNDAY: Clouding over. Rain likely from mid afternoon on. Highs 55-62. Wind variable 5-15 MPH becoming SE.

DAYS 6-10 (MAY 1-5)
The boundary between Canadian chill and southeastern US warmth will be nearby. This is an unsettled pattern and for this area likely near to below normal temperatures.
DAYS 11-15 (MAY 6-10)
Little change to the overall pattern of DAYS 6-10 to start, then may try to reverse and go milder and less unsettled.
Good morning and thank you TK for that detailed update.
Happy it was just a plumber issue. I understand old pipe issues as my house

is nearly 200 years old.
I find it interesting with the Sunday night potential coinciding with 1987 and even the first days of May with 1977.
The May 1977 event was almost mid month (9th-10th). The only coincidence with the other event is date as that was the night of April 28 into early April 29 but that was a major snowstorm. This would be a mix in limited areas.
Yep – Easy to remember…..May 9 is my cousin’s birthday and April 29 is my brother’s. I miss both more than words can say.
Thanks TK !
Good for Charlie Coyle getting game timing and game winning goal after earlier turnover in defensive zone.
That game ending goal was one of the best I have ever seen.
Perfect set up with the 2 passes and the final shot into net.
fantastic!!
It was. I saw it on replay.
I didn’t know if the game was going to go on forever and I didn’t want to end up awake til all hours, so I stopped at the end of the 3rd period.
Was happy to see they won this morning. It ended quickly in OT.
I’ll never forget going to Easter midnight liturgy and getting home around 2:30 or 3am and the Caps-Islanders game was still going in like the 4th OT. This was in the 1980s.
Pat LaFontaine beats Kelly Hrudey. What a game.
I think we can almost award an honorary assist to the Blue Jackets defenseman that tried to call an offsides instead of staying with the play and letting the linesmen do their job. He lost a step and I think that lead to Coyle being that open.
Amazing that the Bruins will have home ice for the remainder of the playoffs including the Stanley Cup finals. Imagine the team skating around with the Cup around TD Garden ice after a game 7 victory! Still a long way to go on that, of course.
Could that be after a game 5 as well? I don’t know if the setup is different for the finals.
Best of 7 throughout
Kid from Weymouth Coyle . He has 5 playoff goals now . They gave up Donato for him
I thought that trade was a very good one. I liked Donato but he needed to go somewhere else to blossom.
I know I remember the conversation we had . Thanks for your help earlier

Good storms in the northern Delmarva Peninsula, headed northeastward.
Thank you, TK.
Could have kept the outdoor site visit for fireworks this am. Oh well, no harm no foul. I am better next Thursday am will be a torrential downpour.
This is exactly why I dislike spring so much. Not the pollen, it’s the cold, raw feel to the air and rain. For those that live in the Woburn area, now is right around the time the Boys & Girls Club host the carnival at the movie theatre and it rains all week.
That’s in about a month (May 16-19), so we’ll see what the pattern is like then.
One thing we have not head much of yet is this chilly/raw stuff. It’s been quite warm this month so far, and now we’re giving some of that back.
Thanks, TK…

getting some sun into that area now.
Great report, as always. This is my only trusted source when I want a real weather outlook
Thank you!

It’s awesome to see you commenting here. I highly encourage you to do so as often as you like, especially if you are “porch chasing” during thunderstorm season.
*Tornado warning* from NWS Boston in northeast CT right now.
South Central Mass please be on the lookout for that severe storm.
Yikes! Looks like that tornadic cell passed a few miles east of my house. The radar indicated cell was over Willington which is the next town NE of me.
I am at work in Manchester now – we had one heavy downpour already, now it is pitch black and pouring again as the next cluster of storms moves in….
I gotta be honest though… I think that warning as well as the new one were issued on a sidelobe contamination signature. I don’t know that that storm was ever rotating much at all. If you’re interested, there’s an explanation of sidelobe towards the very end of this presentation (do a “Ctrl+F”). This storm fits the bill perfectly.

AWESOME!!! Absolutely fascinating! And thank you for posting. Much appreciated. A new learning experience.
TK, Kelly Hrudey was the Islanders goaltender in that 1987 4OT “Easter Epic” game 7 vs the Capitals. He had 73 saves in that game. Pat LaFontaine did score the game winning goal though I don’t recall who he beat. Both are probably my favorite Islanders from that era. That was right around the time I started following them. Incredible game indeed!
Yes I realized later I had the wrong goalie. It was Bob Mason I think.

Tornado warning west of sturbridge. Looks as if storm is traveling S to N – am I correct?
Moving into brookfields
Tornado Warning expired Severe Thunderstorm Warning Northwest of Worcester.
Interesting JJ that JR mentioned that they have lately been putting the disclaimer (which they did for this one) that a severe t storm can produce a tornado. We had talked about that last year when the tornado went Douglas to Upton.
Reading the statement with the severe thunderstorm warning the storm is producing large hail. Warning goes to 3:45pm
If anybody out there drove through this cell or had it pass near or over your location, even if you have not commented before (I’ll look for new ones and approve them) please let us know what you saw.
No report of tornado touching down but I would like to know what did occur (hail, etc).
This cell, though not totally surprising given where the warm air is, was somewhat of a surprise to me because I thought the best shot would be a few hours from now and the ability to get one to spin would be diminished. But that’s weather for you.
I was shocked. I saw Tom’s comments about south of here (I think it was Tom). So when I saw tornado warning mentioned on WHW, I thought it was more well south of us.
I was surprised when I saw a tornado warning issued for northeastern parts of CT and in MA. I thought the severe weather would be in the Mid Atlantic.
One person on the Sutton FB page is in Spencer – east of the warned area – and said she is just having rain.
We just had a very brief burst of small hail – just as grandkids got off the bus
No hail here in Sturbridge. But absolutely pouring. No wind to speak of. No lightning either as of right now.
Just had another bout of heavy rain and thunder again here in Manchester CT
The tornado warned storm went by to my west with very little effect here. Hearing thunder as I type this torrential rain, large drops, as the next line is coming through Moving from south to north. The one that was warned was more of a discrete cell, vs the line of storms that seem to be forming in northern Connecticut
Hard to believe with this being such a raw, chilly, damp day, tornadoes are even discussed in forecasts at all. Brrrrrr!
The dynamics are just above this layer of marine air. It happens.
Any chance the game at Fenway will be played tonight?
They’ll start it….. then we’ll see.

I think a lot of the low level rotation detected on radar was spurious. Something called side lobe contamination. Rotation higher up (say 10,000ft above our heads) was displayed much lower to the ground.

Anyone have any idea where I could find percentage of available sunshine we have had so far this month? I know it has been warmer than average, but I will be shocked if it has been sunnier than average.
Blue Hill Observatory calculates it but I think it’s compiled monthly and released at the end. It’ll be below average. But that makes sense because we’ve had a pattern which sent many systems through. It was drier than normal until a few days ago and is running a few degrees warmer than average, but that’ll come back down somewhat these last 5 days of the month.
Downpour in Sutton.
I see that a lightning strike just occurred in Oxford. Did you hear the thunder?
https://www.lightningmaps.org/?lang=en#y=41.7816;x=-71.4482;z=9;t=3;m=oss;r=0;s=0;o=0;b=;n=0;d=2;dl=2;dc=0;ts=0;tsc=1;src=6;
Yep. Thunder and lightning here. Tx OS
Looks as if lightning to our south. May be turning TV off
Main rain area has reached the city. It’s pouring here. Thought I just heard “distant”
Thunder, but cannot be sure.
Strike in Walpole. Don’t see how I could hear that here as it is about
15 miles away.
Strike in Needham, 5.3 miles from my house. Did not hear it
here in the house.
One inn Dedham?
Nothing more here 0.71 rain
It seems that most of the rains this month have been falling overnights and tonight is no exception. I believe most of our snows this past winter (what few there were) mostly fell overnights as well.
One has to feel for restaurants and other businesses and events that depend on evening customers.
That’s had pretty much zero impact
also if one is going to own a business in a location with changeable and often Stormy Weather that person has to be willing to accept the consequences of weather that does impact their business. Otherwise it would be a wiser choice for them to open a business like that in San Diego
Thank you, TK!
Heard some thunder in the distance.
It’s too bad we’re in such a drought … not! The grass is very green, though. Ducks are frolicking about in the puddles. Mushrooms are growing in the Esplanade Park. I don’t think they’re of the `magic’ variety. I haven’t tried one yet.
The forecast for Boston the coming week looks like one you’d see in Belfast. Sun makes an occasional cameo appearance. Clouds dominate. Rain showers, too. Gray and dismal. I do hope we dry out in June through October. I’m up to here with the precipitation. A good chunk of March was a nice reprieve, with extended sunny and dry weather. But besides that it’s been a 9 month long active and progressive pattern, with the emphasis on active.
This is by far the worst April and early will be in a very long time. Could care less that we are running slightly above average. So frustrating for all the kids sports this spring.
Rain and mud are a challenge. To me…it is one of the best life lessons do a youngun….and in many cases for an oldun
For a but I’m thinking you figured that out
Torrential rain, lightning and thunder here in Coventry CT yet only 43 degrees.
Up to 2” of rain now on the day and 8.15” for the month of April.
Wow. On radar looks as if may move a bit westof here but after today want to watch for a bit.
Holy thunder in Hartford.
You’re in Hartford?
Just had sky open here but only for a minute. It was an arm of what is just west of us
Complete deluge here. Frequent lightning and thunder continues. Up to 2.22” and 8.4” on the month. Increasing by the minute…
I believe I heard Eric say that April 2019 has had the most rainy days in Boston weather history for ANY month.
I believe it. It’s been fairly miserable.
It has not, yet, but it will.
But here’s the thing, other than Monday’s event and today’s event, we had light events. Before these 2 events we were running BELOW AVERAGE for rain and ABOVE AVERAGE for temp.
It has not been miserable. Do you know how many Aprils we’ve had days and days and DAYS of low overcast, fog, drizzle, and 40s? Yup, alot. This was not one of those months.
I’m getting that here now mark. After it hits you it’s coming north to me. Torrential rain, I’m getting 2.78” an hour rain rates on my weather station. Picked up 1.25” so far today.
Here now.
It is decided. Media has really groomed society to be traumatized by nearly all weather. Sad.
I understand folks that suffer depression as a result of darkness or bad weather, but otherwise it’s time for people to learn to suck up the reality of how spring goes around here. It’s never been any different. Sure, some springs are less cloudy, and others are more. And despite being about to break a record for the most number of days with measurable precipitation in any calendar month, that’s actually a pretty lame record if you think about how many months we’ve had extremely prolific rainfall. This is a wet month, but not an extreme one. Sorry. It’s a hype-buy if you believe that.
End of editorial.
Well I was all amped up from chasing a bit tonight so I wrote the blog early and it’s ready…
