Thursday Forecast

6:41AM

DAYS 1-5 (JULY 4-8)
Happy Birthday USA! A typical July summertime pattern will be in place throughout the period, dominated by zonal (west to east) flow of a weak jet stream. A southwesterly surface flow will bring summertime heat and humidity (not extreme) into the region today and Friday, and it will become more humid Saturday ahead of a cold front which will move across the region Saturday night, when the greatest threat of showers and thunderstorms is, although the threat itself may not be all that great. Nevertheless with so many outdoor activities ongoing and still a lot of fireworks displays scheduled for Saturday night, we need to pay attention to that threat, as you don’t need severe storms to result in danger from wind gusts, lightning, flooding, etc. By Sunday, the front will be south of the region and we’ll have turned somewhat cooler and drier, but with some lingering cloudiness and maybe a shower near the South Coast. High pressure builds in with fair weather for Monday.
Forecast details…
TODAY (INDEPENDENCE DAY): Mostly sunny. More humid. Highs 80-87 coast, 87-94 interior. Wind light SW with light coastal sea breezes.
TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Humid. Lows 64-71. Wind light SW.
FRIDAY: Partly cloudy. Humid. Highs 81-88 coast, 88-95 interior. Wind SW up to 10 MPH but some light coastal sea breezes possible.
FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Humid. Lows 66-73. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms. Humid. Highs 88-95, cooler Cape Cod. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Scattered to isolated showers and thunderstorms. Humid. Lows 66-73. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.
SUNDAY: Variably cloudy. Risk of a shower near the South Coast. Less humid. Highs 77-84. Wind light N.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 55-62. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 77-84. Wind light variable with coastal sea breezes.

DAYS 6-10 (JULY 9-13)
Overall west to east jet stream pattern. Fair, warming, increasingly humid July 9-10 as a southwesterly surface flow returns. Cold front brings showers/thunderstorms July 11. High pressure returns with fair weather and lower humidity July 12-13.

DAYS 11-15 (JULY 14-18)
Essentially a continuation of the same pattern with the rough timing of the next shower/thunderstorm threat around July 15-16.

  1. Thank you Tk Happy 4th of July everyone one of my favorite holidays of the year.

  2. I notice on the obs the ocean temps are running in the upper 60s.

Warm to hot airmass, light winds, perfect for warming that top layer of water and the seabreeze brings it right into the beach.

I’ll be looking forward to that later next week.

The above average water flow in the rivers out here doesn’t allow for quick moderation. The water is ICE cold. We’ve been guessing around 55F water temp. It easily cools you off for a while, if you can stay in that long 🙂

    1. Wow. Chilly. Sounds as if you are having a perfect vacation. With FBs glitch yesterday, you photos didn’t download. They should have by now. I have to remember to look

    1. Yuck!!! Even NNE will have those 70+ dewpoints as well. So glad that it will only be a one-day stand.

  3. 6.4 earthquake in Ridgequest CA. NE from LA. Felt in LA

No reports that I’m aware of yet

    1. 6.0 – 6.9 happen about 134 a year. Not often. The report is that It was about 5m deep so ground could not absorb much.

  4. I heard a report that people in Las Vegas felt a little bit of shaking from that quake.

      1. It’s not along San Andreas. It’s a series of smaller faults. Typical to have 1 aftershock 5.4+, 10 at 4.4+

  5. Here is a tweet from CHris Kalohn a digital media producer for ESPN who felt the shaking in Las Vegas from the Earthquake in California
I’m in Vegas and we could feel the hotel swaying here.

    1. I mapped ridgecrest to LA and also to LV. It’s about 150 to LA and I believe I’m seeing 240ish to LV

  6. I’m down here in Sarasota for ten days DP Temps 76-80 air temps gulf to inland 92-97. Sea breeze storms erupting now, lots of lightning. Gulf temp 86 degrees.

  7. There has been alot of seismic activity in oceania/S.E Asia we generally see activity 2 to 4 days after in western North America

  8. Boston Buoy water temp 73.94 degrees. Yummy.
That’s what a light sea breeze will do in a warm air mass.

  9. Happy 4th everyone!

I’ve been fighting a summer cold since Sunday. Nothing terrible. But, there’s something annoying about having a mild fever, scratchy throat, cough, and GI problems (well, the latter’s a given for me any time of year) when it’s warm outside. Didn’t stop me from enjoying being outdoors today.

    1. I’m glad you were able to get out. I am sorry you are not feeling well. Cold are nasty any time but there is something about summer colds. Darn. Feel better, Joshua

      1. Thank you, Vicki. Summer colds are indeed weird. They’re literally a different set of `cold’ viruses called enteroviruses.

By the way, and on a totally different topic Anchorage, Alaska set an all-time record high of 89F today.

  10. For Saturday, there is a Dense Fog Advisory along the very South Coast and a Heat Advisory for a narrow area … Framingham, Woburn, Lawrence, Lowell
