Friday Forecast

7:23AM

DAYS 1-5 (JULY 12-16)
It’s a muggy morning as the overnight heavy rainfall tapers to showers, a few of which are also on the heavier side, but this main area of moisture will be offshore soon and as we break clouds for some sun it will fuel a few more shower and storm threats during the day, because we still have to wait for a cold front to cross the region. This front is not the borderline to a very dry air mass, in fact it will take a few days for it to fully dry out, so even with fair weather upcoming for the weekend and Monday, it will start out somewhat humid Saturday then gradually lessen. In fact it is a weak trough moving through the region Sunday that will deliver the drier air from Canada. This trough will probably not produce any precipitation, however, with its shower activity likely remaining well to the north. By Tuesday of next week, we will introduce some increased humidity and perhaps the risk for a shower or thunderstorm again by the end of that day.
Forecast details…
TODAY: Cloudy start with areas of fog and showers, a few heavy. Becoming partly sunny with one or two passing showers/thunderstorms possible midday and afternoon. Humid. Highs 80-87, coolest South Coast. Wind SW to W 5-15 MPH with higher gusts.
TONIGHT: Clearing. Patchy fog. Slightly less humid. Lows 63-70. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Moderately humid. Highs 83-90, coolest Cape Cod. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Moderately humid. Lows 63-70. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
SUNDAY: Partly sunny. Less humid. Highs 83-90, coolest Cape Cod. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy early, then clearing. Lows 62-69. Wind light W.
MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 78-85, coolest coast. Wind light variable.
MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 60-67. Wind light W.
TUESDAY: Partly sunny. More humid. Highs 82-89. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (JULY 17-21)
General west to east flow with mean high pressure ridge position in the Midwest to upper Plains. Shower and thunderstorm threats will depend on timing of disturbances. There will be a couple during the period. We will also need to watch the remnant moisture from T.S. Barry to see if any of that gets involved. If so, target date is July 18. May be briefly hotter to start the period then more seasonably warm.

DAYS 11-15 (JULY 22-26)
Overall pattern similar, though ridge center may tend to be further west (Plains) versus east (Midwest). Will have to watch for shower and thunderstorm threats based on passing disturbances but overall much of the time will be rain-free.

        1. I say it that way, because these can be very small scale events, where one side of Plymouth can have that amount and 3 miles away, they might have gotten 1 inch.

Nonetheless, I assume there are flooding issues down there and hopefully no water rescues have been needed.

      1. Yes I think we were in the monsoon area lol from Hanover right down through Plymouth county towns . Like I said when I left the house at 5am it was literally pouring extremely hard I was like this commute to Boston is going too be fun but surprisingly I had a great commute as it was tapering & arrived st Northeastern garage at 5:59

  1. Thanks TK
I saw quite a lightning show down here in Virginia last night. The winds gusted a little and it rained hard for a while and a lot of lightning strikes. The best thunderstorm I have seen so far this year.

  2. With the 8 am ob in, up to 5.32 inches in Plymouth in the past 5 hours.

Thankfully, the heaviest rain is offshore.

  3. Thank you, TK.

Tom, SSK, Sue and other south shore residents, that is a boatload of rain. Monsoon territory, indeed.

  4. I would guess that Keith and SSK also have less

Sue? How is your area? Home? Work?

    Please all be safe

  5. Gosh, how could I forget Keith in Hingham? Apologies. Happy Birthday, Keith. I hope all is well. As I recall, you’re/were an avid shortwave radio listener. The other day I explained to my son what that entailed in the late 1970s and early 1980s. No internet. Just a good radio, lots of patience, a manual or guide telling you the frequencies of certain broadcasters (some of my `favorite’ were Radio Moscow, Radio Tirana, and Peking Radio).

    1. As I was typing names, I was wondering who I forgot. I know we have another in hingam? Is it the doctor? It is easy to forget.

  6. Good morning and thank you TK.

I see all of this prolific rainfall amounts. Not so in JP.
Me ole rain gauge measured a paltry 0.43 inch. Grass is still green, so I can’t complain, even if I actually am. πŸ™‚

We had a choice to go out to dinner tonight or tomorrow night and my wife asked
me which day would be better for her and I told Saturday. Sure hope it is at least a
tad drier than today, else I am in trouble. πŸ™‚

  7. Fun quiz, IF anyone is interested. And it is not weather related, but music related

So, I am going to list 10 musical acts. 9 out of the 10 I have seen live and in person,
but one I have NOT seen live.

The quiz is to select the one I have NOT seen.

    The Rolling Stones
    The Who
    Olivia Newton John
    The Eagles
    Aerosmith
    Fleetwood Max
    REO Speed Wagon
    Social Distoration
    Bon Jovi
    Mood Blues

    Have fun…. Answer later today.

      1. I could let you know yes or no, but then that takes one
out of the list one way or the other. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Say the word and I’ll let you know….

  8. Thanks, TK…

Soupy out while on my Dunks run.
    1.39″ of rain overnight…

Olivia Newton John is too obvious, JPD, so I am not going to pick that one. I have seen Barry Manilow (what one won’t do when one’s in love, eh? πŸ™‚ )

I will go with Bon Jovi.

I saw The Who in 1982 at The Centrum in Worcester. They were on their first of 37 Farewell Tours at the time!!!! πŸ™‚

    1. Interesting logic. Not answering yet, unless there is consensus for me
      to do so.

So you think I have seen Olivia Newton Joh, eh? πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  9. Is this a trick ? Jp Dave? Fleetwood max does not exist, unless this was an unintentional typo. How ever my answer is The Who.

    1. Of course it was a typo. I swear on a stack of bibles that I keyed in Mac.

      AND we have a WINNER!!!!!!!

Yes, I did not see the WHO, however, I was in line at a nice intimate
venue to see them way back in the 60s. I was with my girl friend at the time
(now my wife) and another couple and we had tix to see them at what is now
the House Of Blues (I don’t remember what it was called then? Landsdown??)
In any case there was a huge delay in letting us into the venue and the other
couple got really antsy and stupid me (us?), decided to leave with them
when they decided they had enough waiting around.

I am sure we missed something special()*!@&#&*(!@&#*(&!@*(&

Oh well such is life. Some decisions we don’t regret and many others
      we do.

      1. So, yes, I did see Olivia Newton John with my wife and young son at the time (early 80s). We saw her on the Boston Commona,
3rd row seats from the stage and it was a truly awesome performance by her. I am a true rocker by nature, but I really
enjoyed her show as did my wife and son.

          1. Are you in “bust balls” mode????
            πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Yes, it was a special concert area side aside
            on the commons. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

            No, not really.

  10. Unfortunate but great story Jp Dave.
I guess the moral to the story is, you β€œwon’t get fooled again” πŸ˜‰

  11. Thanks TK an Happy Birthday Keith!

1.12″ in the rain gauge here in Coventry, CT overnight. Nothing like what the south shore received but some welcome relief as the grass has been turning a little brown lately. June was the first month in over a year where I have logged less than 3″ of rain on the month.

      1. center is too close to the coast and it will be on shore in 24 hours. I don’t think it is going to make it to hurricane strength.

  12. JP Dave, I miss the days when there were concerts on the Boston Common. Didn’t they call that Great Woods? Then it moved down to Mansfield where it’s changed names many, many times.

In 1982 I had tickets to see the Rolling Stones in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. A day or two before the concert I broke my foot. No concert, alas.

    1. Sorry to hear that. I saw the stones at the old Boston Garden in
1965! Yup, dating myself. It was awesome! Had decent seats, not great, but
      not too bad either.

      1. Cool. I was 1 at the time. Apparently, according to my older brothers, I really liked the Stones and Beatles as a 1 year old.

        1. The Beatles and Rolling Stones were so different it isn’t even funny. Mick couldn’t hold a candle to John and Paul as far as singing goes, but I still preferred the Stones.
My best friend loved the Beatles and couldn’t understand
why I would even like the Stones.

          Ahh to each his own.

    2. Great Woods was/is the name of the woods that the venue and TPC-Boston are built on on the Mansfield-Norton town line. The venue was originally the summer home of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

  13. I have a question for y’all:

Barry had its origins/energy in Tennessee, pushed south on a front and formed into a cyclone in the northern Gulf. How rare is this? Has this happened before?

    1. I honestly do not know. My guess would be that it is probably not all
that common, but not unusual either. I am sure it has happened before.

    1. I NEVER saw the Beatles. i was never really into them. At the time, they
were too “poppy” for me. I liked music with more of an edge.

I saw the Moody Blues a bit more recently at Mohegan Sun.

Many of the groups I saw that did not have that edge, were mainly
for my wife. You know, happy wife, happy life. Although I can honestly
say, I actually still enjoyed seeing those like:

      Witney Houston
      Celine Dion
      Cher
      Maroon Five

      1. Frankly I couldn’t picture you amongst dozens of screaming teenage girls anyway. πŸ˜‰

  14. This question kind of goes along with Captain Fantastic’s post. I know in many instances the coriolis effect is responsible to some degree for clusters of storms to start their rotation in the open ocean, leading to the formation of a cyclone. However with the storm forming over land, was it just an upper low meandering into the gulf that got this going and the coriolis effect had no part in development? Just curious.

    1. Thanks very much, SC…
In my VERY limited understanding of Meteorology, I do notice that energy comes off land from Africa first and the genesis of a tropical cyclone is when it hits tropical waters and travels east to west.
To me, the same thing happened with Barry except that it was north to south from the MidSouth to the Gulf. I am not sure I ever remember this happening. Just curious…

      1. Yes ! We got much more than I thought.

My rather tall recycle bin is filled to the top ! water. I think it got all the water off the roof. It sure looks strange.

  15. 85Β° 77Β° dp here in Sarasota along the gulf coast. Just got out of the water strong rip current great body surfing waves from Barry. Back up to RI tonight its gonna be a bit of a shock to the body swimming in th 72Β° ocean tomorrow in Naragansset tomorrow. Back to work on Monday.

  16. Happy Birthday Keith.
The storms that came through here in Virginia did not cool it off. It is just as warm and muggy but I don’t care as I am having a great vacation. I’m heading on back home to CT tomorrow and looks like the humidity will be in check until the middle of next week.

    1. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens to that line when it gets to 2-4 mikes west of Boston.

Look hard, I think you can see the Onshore flow in the motion of the returns on the radar.

Will that knock the storms down or build them up with convergence ?

      1. Tom, no on shore flow here. plenty of sunshine, temp 88-89, dp 72-73, cape 2500-3000 joules. plenty of juice and instability
with cold front for lift. I am concerned that some cells may go severe.

        1. Indeed …. HRRR I saw this morning on tv seemed to pulse storms in Boston all the way through plymouth.

  17. Damn!@
    I give up.
This sucker is consolidating to south and northern part weakening fast!!!@
    figures. Wonder if just pulsing?
    Don’t think so.

  18. I’m getting all sorts of lightning strike messages…but they are ALL to my EAST πŸ™

The clouds here are towering tho

  19. Looks like the storm is making a beeline for us, at least for now. A lightning strike just to our east.

  20. A crappy ole WIMPORAMA here, although it did drop about 0.20 inch of rain
and dropped the temp about 12 degrees.

  21. Today’s storms were not expected to be all that potent. They did about as expected. The second afternoon threat is a more isolated one currently ongoing NW of Boston. That will be it for the evening.

Our next storm threat is of the isolated variety later Wednesday. Still not too excited about the extreme heat some were talking about. NWS is not either.

Could be, and I stress COULD, significant rainfall from the remains of Barry around next Thursday.

    1. You read my mind. I was wondering if storms were over. I want to put the umbrella up and have dinner on deck.

  22. Oh, the bloody dewpoint! It’s a bit more tolerable now, but not by much. The air today was like molasses: Thick, yucky, gooey, sweaty, soupy, nasty air.

    1. It was thick. I just sat out for dinner and then to relax. There is a bit of a breeze out here. My guess is the buildings in Boston done allow for a breeze.

    2. It is NOT better right now. It is DISGUSTING!!! It’s like one has to swim to get
from point A to point B. PUTRID!!! I like your description.

Dp about 10 degrees lower just to our West.

Our new ACs are doing their jobs, but we cannot place them in every room.
Wiring in this old house just won’t allow it. We have to do the old circuit juggling act as we cannot run 2 Acs on the same circuit (most circuits are
15 AMPs and Acs surge amperage is up around 8 or 9 AMPS with running
amerage around 6 amps. too dangerous or at least a nuisance to try 2 on
the same circuit.) We are in decent shape though as we can run an Ac,
Washing machine and dryer at the same time. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Where the bleep is October????? Bring it on!!

      1. No knob and tube wiring left in this house. That was replaced
many years ago. A neighbor still has a few circuits with Knob and tube.

      2. We did that game in our framingham house. Finally we had electric upgraded but there were still a few things we could not run at the same time.

  23. The heavens have erupted in fairly potent rain showers. I’m in Back Bay. I did not expect this. It’s been raining heavily for 35 minutes.

  24. Sox are winning, but in a rain delay. I don’t know whether the Dodgers will come back in this one. Or, whether they’ll win the series. What I can say is the American League is so dominant at this point (the data on inter-league play since 1997 is vast and damning, quite frankly; world series; all star games) that it should be yet another cause for concern for a sport that’s in trouble. If you put the Dodgers in the AL East they would as good as perhaps the Rays, but not 60 and 32, which they are now. If you put the Blue Jays in, say, the Central Division in the NL they would be fairly close to .500 and perhaps even contend, in part because the division is so awful. There needs to be more parity across the board in the sport. Fewer teams (get rid of Miami, for example; San Diego would be another choice), shorter schedules (120 games), and a reshuffling of AL and NL teams.

    1. I’m hearing that a huge portion of fans at Fenway tonight are dodger fans. Boston gave up on its team in a matter of weeks. So sad that it leaves me speechless

      1. I will be there on Thursday with the family! Hopefully Barry and it’s rain stays away!

      2. My friend (who lives in the northern Mid Atlantic) but grew up down the street from me is visiting up here and was at the game with his children. He mentioned on a FB post “who let in all the Dodger fans?” πŸ˜‰

        1. My friend said there were four full sections that are blue and then a sea of blue throughout the park.
