DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 4-8)
A low pressure trough near the South Coast may trigger a few pop up showers/storms there today, otherwise it’s fair and drying elsewhere. High pressure will bring beautiful weather Monday, then a long-advertised period of more unsettled weather arrives Tuesday to Thursday. Expecting there to be several opportunities for showers and thunderstorms, with the day that is of most concern for stronger storms being Wednesday. There will be much fine-tuning to do in future blog updates.
Forecast details…
TODAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Isolated showers and thunderstorms possible late morning southeastern MA, RI, and adjacent eastern CT. Highs 79-86. Wind NW up to 10 MPH.
TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 58-65. Wind light N.
MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 78-85, coolest coast. Wind light variable with light coastal sea breezes.
MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 55-62. Wind light variable.
TUESDAY: Increasing cloudiness. Chance of showers late-day. Highs 77-84, coolest coast. Wind light SE.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. More humid. Lows 62-69. Wind S 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy. Showers/thunderstorms likely. Humid. Highs 78-85. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Showers/thunderstorms likely. Humid. Lows 63-70. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers and possible thunderstorms. Less humid. Highs 76-84. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 9-13)
August 9 may see a few additional showers and thunderstorms as a broad low pressure trough moves through the region. The August 10-11 weekend looks dry overall but some cool air aloft may trigger a few instability showers, and it may end up a little cooler than average. Possible quick warm-up to end the period as high pressure builds offshore, pushes the trough out, and a southerly air flow develops.
DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 14-18)
With high pressure ridging strongest over the US Plains and Midwest, this allows more troughing to drop through the Great Lakes and Northeast and another one will likely do that the first half of this period with a few shower/thunderstorm episodes and no major heat. Drier/warmer weather later in the period as the trough lifts out and high pressure builds in.
Thanks TK!
This morning Barry used “Summer Polar Air” to describe next weekend. I haven’t heard that term since Don Kent. Back in those days, air from Canada would pay frequent visits even during the hottest of summers. No longer though due to global warming/climate change.
I bet we don’t hear from Canada again any time soon after next weekend either.
The first person I heard “Summer Polar Air” from was Don Kent. That’s where Barry got it. 🙂
Don Kent should have copyrighted the term. I bet no earlier met had ever used it before. 🙂
Thanks TK.
Thanks TK
NWS Boston still thinking Wednesday is the day to watch for strong or severe storms.
I see a couple things that may thwart it, but yes it’s the day of concern. But there is something that concerns me almost more for the day after that, which I shall elaborate on if it still looks that way later.
Logan DP down to 60. Getting there.
back to 64 with sea breeze.
DP 63 here at the old homestead in JP and a toasty 85.
Thanks TK !
TK I can wait to hear your thoughts on the thunderstorms chance for the middle of the week later.
Thank you, TK.
There have now been 251 mass shootings in 216 days. 🙁
Today is day #216 on the calendar.

Looking north of Providence, there are 2 wind boundaries headed for each other.
With the warmth and humidity built up in Rhode Island, I wonder if the Providence area southward is a place where something might pop ….
Well hello little cell. Where did this come from?
Traveling due south over my little corner of the earth

Any thunder or lightning?
Just a little. It took a right hand turn. It ended here and I left for daughters a few miles away but it started up again. Torrential. Roads were flooded but on my return, it had drained. Crazy storm.
That might be left hand turn. Hmmm
I see it is warned now
Getting real dark to our northwest.
Battening down the hatches…
Captain it wasn’t horrible. Some torrential rain and some thunder and lightning but I didn’t have the hail or 60mph winds they mentioned in the warning. Sun is coming out now.
Thanks, North!
Seems like there is some damage with trees down in parts of town.
Oddly there were tons of leaves and branches down between daughters and here but it had to be from the intense rain more than wind
My old neighborhood, off Reservoir St. was hardest hit. Reservoir has been impassible since the storm hit. Heavy tree damage with lines down all over the place.
Hi Ace! I just saw they finally cleared things in the last half hour.
Burlington, VT dew point at 45F, Bangor, ME at 49F.
Ours tomorrow for 1 day 🙂
I can’t wait!
Cell did an end around us to our west and south.
Rehoboth and Dighton are both hard hit right now with quite a few trees down, roads impassable, lines down…
Yikes.
So the small cells that popped up near the MA/NH border were not expected. The isolated storms to the south of Boston were expected.
It’s still early, but the NAM is showing some pretty impressive severe parameters for Wednesday, though it focuses them more west and southwest of SNE. That’ll be a day to watch closely for wherever the ingredients best align.
Is there a rough time for this, WxW?
It would be Wednesday afternoon and evening for any severe stuff, though the bulk of the activity may stay to your west.
Thank you WxW. Greatly appreciated.
Please stay west! WELL west! 🙂
From NWS Upton, NY
increasing consistency in a well-timed vorticity maximum that may enhance
thunderstorm potential for Wednesday evening
Thank you, TK.
Boston’s less warm and less humid than London.
I’m saddened and very angry about the latest mass shootings. Angry because we wring our hands once again, and act as if we can’t do something about this. The hollow sounding “thoughts and prayers” sounds so vacuous and helpless. We’re a can-do nation. We can do something about this. But, we’ve collectively decided not to. We sit on our hands and wait for the next mass shooting to occur. Shameful for a civilized nation. Similarly on the environment. We’ve been told to be good stewards by our presidents, including Bush and Obama. Yet, we’re not doing it systematically. We don’t prioritize it. But, we do somehow always politicize these issues, even though the issues are NOT political. Our founding fathers laid the groundwork for political action that served the common good. However, on both sides of the political spectrum we’ve splintered into special interests that often have nothing to do with societal or common good. It’s the me, me, me constituent in one district versus the me, me, me constituent in another. That’s not how a democracy is supposed to work. God help us.
