Tuesday Forecast

7:24AM

DAYS 1-5 (SEPTEMBER 17-21)
High pressure dominates. It’s a dry pattern, but there are still things to talk about, such as the cooler air on a north to northeast wind through Wednesday, which may also bring in some low level ocean cloudiness for parts of the region anytime from later today into Wednesday, and maybe a patch of drizzle from the thickest clouds, and there is also the possibility of the first patchy frost of the season in typical interior low-lying cold spots Thursday morning as we’ll have perfect conditions for radiational cooling Wednesday night. We also will need to watch for increasing swells and some rough surf, due to well-offshore Hurricane Humberto, along the shoreline later this week, which will be a concern as we will also be turning warmer as high pressure sinks south of the region. This will send some people to the beaches for “one last go”, but with these conditions the rip current risk will be high, and many beaches are not staffed with life guards after Labor Day Weekend. Extra caution will be imperative! I will repeat this reminder as the week goes on. Please tell your family/friends if you know they will be going to the coast.

DAYS 6-10 (SEPTEMBER 22-26)
A summer feel September 22-23 as we reach the autumnal equinox (September 23) with dry weather and much above normal temperatures. A series of cold fronts will knock temperatures back somewhat to near to above normal with a couple rounds of showers possible September 24-26.

DAYS 11-15 (SEPTEMBER 27-OCTOBER 1)
Another surge of significant warmth is possible in the last days of September and possibly to October 1 as high pressure in upper levels expands across the Northeast again. Dry weather would be dominant, with shower activity limited.

    1. A quick Google search found this in the Globe in December of 2018. Not sure if the bill has had any movement as it was expected to be filed in January of this year.

Early sunsets got you down? A Quincy lawmaker has a cure for those wintertime blues.

Yes, it’s about time again — time to debate the merits of daylight saving time.

State Senator John Keenan’s staff is putting the finishing touches on a bill that would keep Massachusetts in Atlantic Standard Time year-round, rather than falling back to Eastern Standard Time every November and springing forward every March. Keenan expects to file the bill in January, soon after the new legislative session begins.

The bill would move Massachusetts toward a new time zone only if three other New England states — Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island — agree to go along.

      1. I’m glad to hear they are only changing if other states change as well. It makes a big difference for some businesses – mine being one of them. I’m not in favor of the change. Unlike a lot here, I’m old enough to recall how the majority detested moving the time forward in January during the energy shortage in the mid 1970s. Either way, whatever the decision and as long as neighboring states make the change, I’ll support whatever the state decides. We are, after all, one of the best states in the country. We didn’t earn that recognition by being foolish.

          1. I know late sunrises get me down. Unfortunately year round daylight saving time is now gaining ground in many states. Makes me sick thinking about the concept. Our morning winters will be even darker. 🙁

            1. I don’t see the benefit or the reasoning. The daylight is the same. Although, as long as it is consistent across the country and certainly in our area, I like the dark as much as the light so ….

  1. Tropical depression in the Atlantic looks to take a close path to my ne this weekend as a cat 1. To what are your thoughts to me there is so much saharan dust I would not think it would be conductive fo formation. Models are 50 50 on it

    1. Truly awesome. I’m sure Carl will be in attendance. What a story. Mike will get a standing ovation, I’m sure, as he should. His grandfather was a legend. I loved Yaz – all aspects of his game were excellent.

  2. Thank you, TK.

75 is an unlikely number this week. Cokie Roberts just passed away. In the 1970s, Cokie Roberts was a pioneering journalist at NPR. The all-female trio of Nina Totenberg, Linda Wertheimer, and Cokie Roberts was path-breaking. Roberts had quite a name – Mary Martha Corinne Morrison Claiborne Boggs. She will be missed.

TK, regarding Ric Ocasek, you mentioned the quirky song on the debut album that uses whistles, ratchets, Mario-like electronic noises, and even bike horns, all played by keyboardist Greg Hawkes. Here are some lyrics to that song – they are eccentric, to the say the least:

    Get the Wisenheimer brainstorm
So don’t you try to hide it
I’m in touch with your world
I been lying on your feathers
You keep talking about the weather
    I’m a psilocybin pony
    You’re a flick fandango phoney
    It’s a sticky contradiction
It’s a thing you call creation
    Everything is science fiction
    And I ought to know

    1. As a side note the line “everything is science fiction” was originally written as “everything you say is fiction” but keyboard is Greg Hawkes misheard the lyric, and created that odd sound that accompanies the lyric in the song. After that Ric changed the lyrics to accommodate that.

    2. When I was in college we had a theory that The Cars created lyrics by letting an ant crawl around on a page with a bunch of words on it and writing down the ones that it touched.

  3. Coach went to the lefty instead. Imelda just named for the storm in the
Gulf. Jerry taking his warm-up jacket off and stretching for the storm in
    Atlantic.

      1. Going tomorrow night just to see him play. I can remember scraping money together just to see Ted and Yaz at the ballpark.

  4. I just heard that news on Alex Trebek. So sad to hear it after a few weeks ago he announced he was done with chemo.

  5. Humberto’s a cat 3, based on what the latest plane is measuring.

Pressure at 952 mb, flight level winds at 105 knots. Expect a special advisory update at 8am.

  6. Mike Yastrzemski homers to straight-away, dead centerfield at Fenway in the fourth inning.
    Chills, man…chills

  7. CF, thanks for alerting us to Mike Yastrzemski’s homerun. I just saw it. Wow! A “can you believe it” moment. Even in a very disappointing season for the Sox there have been a few good moments at the old ball yard. This one was provided by a Giant, but one with familial ties to the Red Sox.

    1. I’m not going to even say it, but…
Nevermind, I will. They have done a great job on some things this season, but the damn finagling of storm status to try to verify a forecast needs to stop. It’s more than obvious to myself and every other colleague I’ve spoken to. We know.
