Wednesday Forecast

7:31AM

DAYS 1-5 (DECEMBER 18-22)
A disturbance behind the departing low triggers early to mid morning flakes for some eastern areas before the system is completely offshore today, but an arctic cold front will slice through the region later today with a snow shower / snow squall threat. So in addition to the lingering snow/ice making for slippery travel today, it can be added to a little bit more by the early day snow east and scattered squalls later, in addition to any squalls producing briefly strong wind and extremely low visibility. And then in comes very cold air tonight through Thursday along with wind with air temperatures struggling to get back to 20 in some areas Thursday while wind chills are below 0. Easing of the wind should make Friday more tolerable though it will still be cold. At this point, the weekend looks mostly dry but a weak trough moving eastward across the region can trigger some light snow or snow showers any time from late Saturday to early Sunday.
The forecast details…
TODAY: Cloudy with snow showers NH Seacoast and far eastern MA early morning, otherwise clearing with sun emerging from west to east this morning. Clouds return from west to east mid to late afternoon with scattered snow showers and snow squalls. Highs 33-40. Wind W increasing to 10-20 MPH.
TONIGHT: Variably cloudy with scattered snow showers and snow squalls early evening, then mostly clear. Lows 8-15. Wind NW 15-25 MPH, higher gusts. Wind chill below 0.
THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 18-25. Wind NW 10-20 MPH. Wind chill near to below 0 at times.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 5-12. Wind NW 5-15 MPH. Wind chill near to below 0 at times.
FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 23-30. Wind N 5-15 MPH, higher gusts. Wind chill in the 10s.
FRIDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 5-10 interior valleys, 10-15 elsewhere. Wind light variable.
SATURDAY: Increasing clouds. Late-day or evening light snow or snow showers possible. Highs 28-35. Wind light variable.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Light snow or snow showers possible. Lows 20-27. Wind light variable.
SUNDAY: Light snow or snow showers possible early. Increasing sun. Highs 30-37. Wind light variable.

DAYS 6-10 (DECEMBER 23-27)
Our region will be in between far-separated jet streams (polar near the US/Canada border) and subtropical over the far southern US. Overall this is a fairly dry pattern with temperatures briefly milder December 23 then back to seasonably chilly for the balance of the period. Weak disturbances may bring some cloudiness at times with a remote risk of a passing rain/snow shower December 24 and a little light snow or snow showers December 25 and again a minor precipitation threat possible at the end of the period.

DAYS 11-15 (DECEMBER 28-JANUARY 1)
A little uncertainty for this period but overall looks like a similar pattern to start. We’ll see a lot of cold re-building in Canada and some of it may make a run into New England depending on the timing of polar jet stream disturbances.

    1. I was at 1.8 before the rain and then add another 0.25 overnight for
a total of 2.05 on the event.

      Will update spreadsheet later.

      thank you.

  1. Tom: re: Bermuda

I have also witnessed your cumulus phenomenon in March and April.
Right on the beach it would be sunny, move a few hundred feet inland and it
    was cloudy. πŸ™‚

Don’t expect great warmth, but the weather will be most enjoyable!!!
60s on cooler days, 70s on warmer days.

Great tennis and golf weather, not to mention site seeing and shopping.
Food is wonderful. You’ll have a great time.

FWIW, I was completely comfortable swimming in the ocean in February, March and April. Compared to up here in the Summer, it was fantastic.

I remember in Feb when I was swimming in the ocean, some locals came by
dressed in Winter parkers and ski hats. HILARIOUS scene, I have to tell you. πŸ™‚

    1. Love your comment, JPD. When we would travel to Charleston during the kids’ April vacation, the complex where my in-laws lived would open its pool just for us. They’d say – those crazy kids are coming again. The kids would also be the only ones in the ocean.

    2. Thanks JpDave ! I can see that happening if we get a cool day, it won’t stop my wife from getting in the ocean. I might be standing with the locals wearing a winter jacket. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  2. There are snow squalls warnings up for parts of NJ and PA. These are like thunderstorms some towns get hit while others nothing happens. Will all get the cold that will follow the front.

    1. Translation….this model is predicting a very strong PV for early January which keeps the cold bottled up around the North Pole with milder air across North America.

The GEFS and Euro support colder weather over the eastern US by then.

  3. That squall moving into northern Litchfield County is really packing a punch and appears to be headed my way. Very heavy snow with that cell….

    1. From what I can see on radar, nothing impressive up this way. That one in CT may pack a bit of a punch. Watching….

    1. Near whiteout….not surprised. Unfortunately it looks like the bulk of that one is going to miss me to the north.

  4. This is not appear to be widespread like the snow squall event we saw last week of January last winter but those towns that see the squalls its going to pack a punch.

  5. It may split the uprights to your north Mark and to my south. Looks like the Stafford, Woodstock ct. area for the heaviest.

    1. SC – I am at work now so it is likely going to slide to my north but we may get hit back home. I am near the Tolland line and it looks to be on a good trajectory for the house.

Also looks like a new strong cell is forming to your west and heading your way…

  6. Very light snow flurries in Sutton.

I was going to say some flakes here but I’ve already given coastal his Christmas present for 2019 πŸ™‚

  7. Unless there is some Northward growth to these cells and/or new ones pop,
Boston will miss out completely. πŸ™‚

  8. I was wondering why a snow squall warning up wasn’t up for what I was seeing near Danbury now one just went up for that area.

  9. I am splitting the uprights unfortunately here in Manchester, CT. Squalls just missing me to the north and south.

I-95 Corridor from New Haven to New York is going to be a disaster shortly when that potent squall line moves through. Looks like the entire corridor will get crushed at the same time. Poor timing with the commuter peak hours.

  10. Special Marine Warning issued for western areas of Long Island squalls with those squalls coming through. The area just west of Danbury looking to be picking up in intensity.

  11. Pretty much the entire state of CT crushed by a squall line except a 5-10 mile opening over me and a couple mile dry slot over JJ. LOL…

  12. That squall line pushing into the Bridgeport New Haven area almost looks to have a bow to it. Probably some strong winds with that line I would imagine.

  13. Too bad that the landscape one week from today will be considerably different. This snowcover would have been perfect. Oh well. πŸ™

  14. JPD – The snowfall amounts I posted this morning are the final total as Logan only recorded a β€œtrace” overnight. Nothing more than a sugar coating in my neighborhood either.

  15. Son and GF love in Cumberland RI. He is in westerly so got tons of warnings on phone but missed squalls. She said she literally could not see the car in front of her. They can be very scary
