Sunday Morning Update

7:40AM

Here comes the front! The rain arrived in the pre-dawn hours in most of the southern NH, eastern MA, and RI region, with a few showers leading the main area. This area is just making it onto Cape Cod as of 7:30AM, and of course will end there later (early afternoon). Everywhere else, the rain will be ending from west to east by late in the morning. This afternoon will see a quick transition back to the very nice weather we have been experiencing. Though there may be some additional passing clouds later today as a gusty wind develops, think of this as the delivery of the very nice air mass that will hang around, courtesy high pressure, for much of if not all of the coming week (more details tonight on The Week Ahead post). For now a quick updated forecast…

TODAY: Rain exits southern NH, RI, and eastern MA by late morning but lingers on Cape Cod until very early afternoon. Clearing west to east following with sunshine dominating much of the afternoon though some additional passing clouds possible later in the day. Highs around 70, holding in 60s most areas. Wind SW shifting to W 5-15 MPH, then NW, increasing to 10-20 MPH with higher gusts later.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy to clear. Lows 45-50 except lower 50s urban centers & Cape Cod. Wind NW 10-20 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Highs 60-65. Wind NW 10-20 MPH and gusty.

TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY: Mostly clear nights and mostly sunny days expected. Overnight lows upper 30s to upper 40s early in the period, middle 40s to lower 50s later. Daytime highs 60s Tuesday, middle 60s-lower 70s Wednesday, upper 60s-70s thereafter.

Weekend Hiccup

5:31PM

A cold front will be crossing southeastern New England Saturday night and the first half of Sunday, and a weak wave of low pressure may slow the front’s progress briefly early Sunday, otherwise that will be a hiccup in a weekend that starts out and ends up fine.

Next week, another sprawling high pressure area will arrive and stay for a while, keeping any storminess away. A cool start to the week will be followed by a warming trend.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England (southern NH, eastern MA, and RI)…

Dry Days

7:23AM

High pressure cruises across the US Northeast today then sinks southeast of the region Wednesday into late week. We in southeastern New England start out with a chilly day Tuesday, with the first frost occurring Tuesday night in many areas outside of urban centers and away from the coast. Moderation occurs from mid week into late week. Sunshine will dominate during the days – some very nice weather. Looking ahead to the weekend: Looks mild with a fair start and a shower threat following as a cold front moves into the region.

The Week Ahead

7:51PM

A fairly quiet week is ahead. The “busiest” day is likely to be Monday as a cold front pushes through the region, keeping the air on the cooler side through Tuesday. A mid week warm up will take place as high pressure which builds across the Northeast Tuesday settles over and just south of the region Wednesday into Thursday. That, combined with upper level high pressure, still stave off any wet weather through late in the week and likely into the weekend. An approaching low pressure trough from the west may send some showers into the region by later in the weekend but there are no indications of widespread rain at this time.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England (southern NH, eastern MA, and RI)…

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows 50-55. Wind SW under 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers. Highs 65-70. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 53. High 79.

FRIDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 53. High 74.

SATURDAY: Partly sunny. Low 52. High 73.

SUNDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 53. High 72.

Flip Flopping

6:31PM

The heat is gone, the cool is in. Also, humidity is being replaced by dry air, which will be with us for most of the weekend. Things are moving along quickly though. And though this weekend will not be cloudless, it will be quite enjoyable, weatherwise. Even though high pressure starts to build in at the surface on Saturday, lingering cold air above will set the stage for instability clouds to develop so there will be a fair amount of clouds with intervals of sun during the late morning to mid afternoon hours before the clouds start to dissipate. Before that happens, a few of them may grow just enough to release a few sprinkles or light showers. Most areas will not see them. High pressure builds overhead Saturday night, which will be quite cool, and Sunday, which will start with bright sun but probably end on the cloudier side as warm air flows in above us. A warm front will pass by the region late Sunday night followed by a cold front Monday, which will cause additional cloudiness along with a threat of showers. This will set up a chilly Monday night and a bright but cool Tuesday. A warm-up is expected by the middle of next week, but at this point does not look anything like the shot of heat and humidity we just experienced.

Forecast for southeastern New England (RI, eastern MA, and southern NH)…

TONIGHT: Isolated showers southeastern MA ending early, otherwise variably cloudy. Lows 50-55 except some upper 40s in the remote northwestern suburbs of Boston through interior southern NH. Wind NW 5-15 MPH gusts around 20 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mixed sun and clouds. Remote chance of a brief sprinkle or light shower mainly during the midday through mid afternoon. Highs in the 60s, may hit 70 few areas. Wind NW 10-20 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Clouds vanish. Lows in the 40s, upper 30s possible inland valleys.  Diminishing NW breeze.

SUNDAY: Bright sun morning, filtered sun afternoon, mostly cloudy by the end of the day. Highs in the 70s. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Variably cloudy. Passing showers. Low 53. High 69.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 44. High 64.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 48. High 71.

THURSDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 55. High 80.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 58. High 72.

Humidity Hangs On, Fall Feel Follows

2:24AM

Thunderstorms made a run for eastern MA on Wednesday night but ran into issues, specifically some warm air above the ground which capped the atmosphere, and in addition to forcing the storms to die out as they moved closer, kept any from forming in the area during the day. A few downpours and storms did regenerate and move across northeastern MA and southeastern NH, but all the activity is now gone. A second disturbance may send a cluster of showers/storms across northern MA and southern NH during the early morning, but no severe weather is expected. During the day Thursday, sunshine will end up dominant as cloudiness from the first batch of storms is offshore and afternoon storms will be only isolated. The main action, in the form of a line or cluster of showers and thunderstorms, will arrive during the later evening or night, and may hold off in much of eastern MA and RI until after 11PM. This will lessen the chance of any severe weather, which will be much less likely well after the maximum daytime heating. Nevertheless, the atmosphere over eastern MA, southern NH, and RI, will be far less stable than it was during Wednesday, so storms are a good bet.

The cold front responsible for the storm threat will be very slow to exit on Friday, and a wave of low pressure forming on it along with upper level low pressure moving in from the west will combine to cause additional showers and possible thunderstorms during the day – a slightly more pessimistic forecast than previous. By Friday  night, genuinely drier and much cooler air will finally make it to the region, setting us up for another feel-of-fall day on Saturday, as surface high pressure builds in. Another quick turn-around day will occur Sunday as high pressure sinks to the south and the air warms (but not nearly to the levels of the current spell of heat). Another cold front flies across the region early Monday, sending another chilly air mass in for the early part of next week. Temperature moderation will follow by the middle of next week as the roller-coaster pattern continues.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England (southern NH, eastern MA, and RI)…

TODAY: Some cloudiness and a threat of a shower or thunderstorm northern MA and southern NH early to mid morning, otherwise partly cloudy to mostly sunny and hazy with additional isolated showers or thunderstorms possible during the mid to late afternoon. Continued hot and humid. Highs 80s to around 90 except some 70s  South Coast areas. Wind SW 10-20 MPH and gusty.

TONIGHT: Heavier clouds arrive from northwest to southeast along with episodes of showers and thunderstorms, but much of the activity may hold off until later at night. Storms may be strong. Warm and muggy. Lows in the 60s to around 70. Wind variable 5-15 MPH, higher gusts near some storms.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy with episodes of showers and possibly a few thunderstorms. Continued humid. Highs in the 70s. Wind variable to NNW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy, cooler, lowering humidity. Lows upper 40s outlying valleys to middle 50s urban centers. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Highs in the 60s. Wind NW 10-20 MPH.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 48. High 72.

MONDAY: Variably cloudy. Low 47. High 68.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 44. High 64.

WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 50. High 72.

Mid Summer Memory

6:27PM

First I would like to re-post a portion of a comment I made on the previous blog…

Media (news directors want this) puts out forecasts of a cold & possibly snowy winter ahead, as do two of the more popular almanacs. And my scientific view point is skewed today by a reliable long range model forecasting warmer than normal weather overall (not every day) for the balance of 2013, right into the winter. Conflicting indications much? Based on that, and common sense, I won’t be issuing an “official” winter forecast until around the middle of November. Call me a coward, but I’m playing it safe. I just have no idea what the upcoming winter will be like. I prefer to focus on the next 7 days, detailing as much as I can the next few days, and generalizing days 4 to 7. This will continue to be a daily practice and I hope you find it useful.
Now, on to that practice…

Lots of clouds and a period of rain visited much of southeastern New England today, and now a warm front has cleared the region, leaving behind only some lingering cloudiness. But the door has been opened to an air mass more typical of the middle of Summer, and Wednesday will evoke a memory of  the heat in July that was prevalent for much of the month. But how you can tell this is a late Summer heat blast will be by observing that the sun does not rise so early as it did back in July, and of course that it sets much earlier (7PM versus about 8:20PM) and in a more due west direction instead of the northwest as it did in the longest days. In fact Wednesday’s sunset is the final 7PM or later sunset for the year.

A heat advisory has been posted for Wednesday for most of eastern MA except the South Coast through Cape Cod, and for interior southeastern NH. High temperatures in these areas will be in the lower to middle 90s, and the heat index (how it feels combining heat & humidity) will reach or exceed 100.

With the cold front that will put an end to this heat still located far to the northwest of the area, Wednesday night will be a very warm and humid night, uncomfortable for sleeping for some of you. This is why it’s not always a wise idea to take out and pack up the AC before the end of September.

The cold front may be slow enough that we get through the daylight hours of Thursday with no more than the threat of an isolated shower or thunderstorm, and a main line of showers and storms holding off until sometime at night, possibly late at night. At this time, I am going to go with the main action not reaching the region until after the Pats/Jets game, but anybody going to the game should be prepared for stormy weather, in case it does arrive more quickly than currently expected.

Once the cold front gets into the region it will push sluggishly through during the overnight of Thursday and early Friday morning, with its showers and storms finally pushing to the South Coast and Cape Cod. Lingering rain is expected over eastern MA for a portion of Friday morning as a little wave of low pressure forms on the front just gone by, but it may be somewhat unstable during the afternoon as colder air moves in aloft and sets the stage for additional pop up showers in the afternoon to early evening. It will be turning breezy and much cooler with the air drying out. By Friday night and Saturday, the core of this much cooler air mass will be over southeastern New England, and it will feel more like late September or early October.

Looking ahead: A great finish to the weekend, bright and a little milder by Sunday. A reinforcing cold front comes through Sunday night or early Monday, bringing another shot of chilly air to the region for a brief stand before a new warm-up commences.

The Week Ahead

8:28PM

A week of changes, especially temperature changes, is what we have coming for southeastern New England. A refreshing air mass moved in during Sunday and will be right over the region Monday, starting the new work and school week off on a bright, dry, cool note. But the high pressure area responsible for this shot of cooler air will sink to the south of the region on Tuesday and a very rapid warm-up will ensue, accompanied by some cloudiness Tuesday as the warm air flows in both at the surface and aloft. By Wednesday, enough of the long-lasting heat from the Plains will have been tapped and transported northeastward to bring a burst of mid Summer heat to the region. Very warm air will hold on into Thursday, along with a shot of humidity ahead of an approaching cold front. This front will bring showers and thunderstorms sometime between Thursday afternoon and Thursday night, timing uncertain and based on the timing of the front which will become more clear as that time frame moves closer. The end of the week looks much cooler, but the amounts of fair weather versus a shower threat will depend on the position and movement of an upper level low pressure trough. The Friday through Sunday forecast is very low confidence at this point so please check back for updates.

Late Summer See-Saw

2:38AM

School’s back in session and September is nearly a week old. For many, this is Fall, but we all know that technically we are pushing through the late Summer with the equinox still many days away. The pattern will be one of mostly dry weather and roller-coaster temperatures (cool today, warmer  weekend, cooler early  next week, warmer mid next week). The only precipitation threat comes during the morning hours of Sunday as a disturbance passes through the region then perhaps at the very end of the forecast period which is too far away to figure out any detail.

Quick & Quiet

7:20AM

Weather systems are moving along, but the pattern will be quiet since none of these systems are likely to cause any significant weather. One such weak system is moving through this morning with clouds and a few brief showers, but is really just the leading edge of a shot of cooler air which will be with us through Friday night. High pressure that builds in Friday will quickly sink to the south of New England Saturday, allowing a warm-up. By Sunday another weak cold front will slide through, probably early in the day, without a great deal of fanfare, and return a slightly cooler air mass to the region for early next week. Quickly on its heels a warm up follows by the middle of next week.

Forecast for southeastern New England…

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 50. High 70.

TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 50. High 75.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Low 58. High 80.

Comfort Zone

11:30PM

The cold front is through the region and drier air is now flowing in, and will be in place for a few days. It will still be a warm day Wednesday as high pressure builds in. A secondary cold front will pass through the region Thursday bringing clouds and a risk of passing showers, introducing a cooler and dry air mass that will last through Friday night. Temperatures will moderate on the weekend as high pressure sinks south of the region. Another cold front will approach on Sunday bringing some clouds and possibly a few showers, before a push of somewhat cooler air arrives for the start of next week.

The Week Ahead (Belated Edition)

5:34PM

No sense going into great detail about Monday, since it’ll be mainly over by the time most of you read this. You either saw some downpours or you did not. All in all, it was not a total wash out of a day in just about all areas but a few areas did see more persistent shower and storm activity, with localized flooding being the main issue where storms lasted. Are we in for a repeat tomorrow? Yes and no. Though there will be muggy air remaining around tonight through much of tomorrow and showers/storms can pop up at any time, some producing heavy rain, I think we really only have a 3 hour period Tuesday across southeastern New England in which the heaviest and most widespread activity will occur. This is about 11AM to about 2PM for southern NH, east central and northeastern MA, and after 2PM until about sunset for southeastern MA and RI. Once the front interacting with the muggy air pushes to the east and offshore (later Tuesday night), we will see some drier air work in and fair weather which will last through Wednesday. Another cold front will swing across the region from northwest to southeast Thursday, producing clouds and perhaps some passing showers, and introducing a cooler air mass for Thursday night through Friday night, with fair weather. High pressure settling to the south of New England will quickly cause a warm-up over the weekend, and we’ll have to watch another cold front trying to push in from the northwest on Sunday (based on current timing expectations).

1:28PM

Unsettled & Humid Labor Day Weekend

3:20PM

For the next 5 to 7 days we will be stuck in a pattern of humid southwesterly flow between high pressure over the Atlantic Ocean and a mean low pressure trough to the west of New England. Weak frontal systems will try to push through from time to time, responsible for kicking off episodes of showers and thunderstorms, but none of these fronts will make a strong push through the region. I don’t see a big change in this pattern right into the middle of next week. The news here is mixed, since many people have outdoor plans for the long weekend, showers in that case are not so welcomed. But it has been dry in August, so any rain in that regard is welcomed. I believe that most of the shower activity will be north and west of Boston through Sunday and more likely anywhere in the region Monday. By Tuesday it should back off somewhat but the threat will still be there. It remains to be seen how much dry air works in by the middle of next week. I’m leaning away from it making a strong push into the region, at least initially.
