Weekend Winner

3:36AM

The muggies have been pushed offshore by a cold front, and though the dry air is in, it will actually be warmer than yesterday in most of the region due to lots of sun and a westerly wind that dries and warms as it comes down off the mountains to the west. The air will cool a little bit by Sunday but still be quite mild, along with low humidity. High pressure will hang on during Monday which will be another excellent weather day. This nice stretch is also perfect timing for star gazers as the next 3 nights will offer an excellent view of the Perseid Meteor Shower, peaking Sunday night and early Monday morning (though Saturday night and Monday night will still be decent). The best viewing time will be from midnight to just before first light. If you are out there, try to get away from any light pollution and look high in the northeast sky. Perseid meteors radiate out from near the Omega Constellation “Cassiopeia” (looks like the letter W and is easy to find). They are also very fast-moving meteors and tend to leave thin but sometimes bright white or blue streaks. Optimal viewing conditions may offer up to 100 meteors per hour during the peak.

Looking ahead, a cold front will swing through on Tuesday with a brief return to humidity, showers, and thunderstorms, before another cooler, drier airmass comes in for the middle of next week.

Showers/Storms Today Lead To Great Weekend

7:46AM

A slow-moving cold front running into tropical moisture will produce showers and thunderstorms today, some with heavy rain, as it moves west to east across southeastern New England. This front will accelerate offshore by early Saturday allowing for fair and warm weather with lowering humidity. Great weather will continue Sunday and Monday thanks to a high pressure area dominating the weather. The next shower and thunderstorm threat will be Tuesday when a disturbance is expected to cross there region. More great weather returns by the middle of next week as it looks now.

Forecast for southeastern New England…

TODAY: Mainly overcast with episodes of showers and thunderstorms, some with heavy rain. Muggy. Highs in the 70s. Wind S 5-15 MPH gusting to 25 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Additional scattered showers and thunderstorms possible. Muggy. Lows in the 60s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Clouds may linger SE MA otherwise partly to mostly sunny. Lowering humidity. Highs 85-90, cooler Cape Cod. Wind W 10-20 MPH gusting to 30 MPH.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 62. High 82.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 59. High 81.

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows 50s. Highs 70s.

Muggies Return

1:21AM

Humidity, showers, and thunderstorms will be the story through Friday night as a warm front moves north of the region today and a cold front crosses late Friday and early Saturday. Of the 2 days, Friday will see the most numerous showers and thunderstorms. Right now, I’m optimistic that the front will clear the region Saturday, with some lingering clouds in the morning for southern and eastern areas, but otherwise much nice weather for the remainder of the day and drier, comfortable weather for Sunday and early next week.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England…

TODAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Chance of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms. More humid. Highs middle 70s to lower 80s, coolest South Coast. Wind SSW 10-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Patchy fog. Chance of showers. Humid. Lows in the 60s. Wind S 10-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Episodic showers and thunderstorms, some possibly heavy. Muggy. Highs in the 70s to near 80. Wind S 10-20 MPH.

SATURDAY: Clouds linger southern and eastern areas in the morning, otherwise partly cloudy to mostly sunny. Low 66. High 85.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 61. High 81.

MONDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 57. High 77.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Low 55. High 76.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Low 56. High 79.

One Then Three & Three

7:56PM

Before we get to the weather, for those who see this post in the 8PM hour Tuesday, the International Space Station will be visible as it passes nearly overhead from the SW sky to the ENE sky starting at 9:04PM. The HTV4 satellite will also appear in the NW sky slightly below the half way up point in the sky moving to the NE starting at 9:44PM. Should be clear enough to see both, though the ISS will be the highest up and most brilliant of the 2 passes.

Weatherwise, one more nice day Wednesday as high pressure hangs on but warm air starts to come in aloft, producing some high clouds. Then a slow-moving cold front takes from Thursday through Friday night to pass through the region, with episodes of showers and thunderstorms and a return to muggy air. This front gets offshore (hopefully) on Saturday, which should show improvement. A drier air mass comes in Sunday and lasts into early next week. There continues to be no hot weather in sight.

The Week Ahead

9:51PM

The week starts with a shot of refreshing air from Canada on a northwest wind behind a departing upper low and arriving surface high. The air moderates a little but remains comfortable through Tuesday. A warm front pushes eastward toward the region by Wednesday with more clouds and eventually a shower threat. We’ll be near a front on Thursday and Friday with warm/humid air just to the south. It’s hard to say how strong the push of this will be into the region at this point but going to lean for a stronger push of it, along with a shower and thunderstorm threat due to the closeness of the front. Looking into next weekend, low pressure in eastern Canada and high pressure over the east central US combine to send a warm westerly flow across the region.

Imperfection Implication

4;33PM

The first weekend of August is upon us, and a couple of disturbances will be traversing the New England region during this time. This implies that the weather will not be perfect, but practical meteorology indicates that the weekend overall will be generally quite nice. Depending on your plans, you may have to watch for a passing shower or thunderstorm a couple times tonight,  Saturday, and again later Sunday. Otherwise, much of this weekend will be rain-free with warm air Saturday, mild air Sunday, and a lack of high humidity.

A cold front sweeping through the region Sunday night (responsible for Sunday’s afternoon shower/storm threat)  will bring a blast of cool and dry air for Monday of next week. But things will be moving along in the atmosphere and though it will remain dry and pleasant, it will already turning a little warmer Tuesday. As we head into the middle and latter portion of the week, timing becomes less discernible with weather systems, but an early call would be to expected clouds and a shower threat with a warm front Wednesday, a sneaky hotter day Thursday, and a cold front bringing a thunderstorm threat Friday. Fine-tuning to come, of course, as these days draw closer.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England (southern NH, eastern MA, and RI)…

TONIGHT: Variably cloudy with a risk of passing showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 10PM, then partly cloudy. Lows 56-64, coolest inland valleys. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 55-65, coolest inland valleys, mildest urban areas. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny morning. Variably cloudy with a risk of showers and thunderstorms afternoon. Highs 75-82. Wind WSW 10-20 MPH.

MONDAY: Partly cloudy, breezy, cool, dry. Low 55. High 75.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny, milder, still dry. Low 57. High 79.

WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy, warmer, more humid, with a chance of a few showers. Low 61. High 81.

THURSDAY: Partly cloudy, hot, humid, with a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Low 67. High 89.

FRIDAY: Partly sunny, windy, warm, muggy, with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Low 69. High 86.

Heat Shield

5:23PM

We are in one great weather pattern. Though you may be a little disappointed if you love heat and humidity, because both, especially heat, will be rather absent as far as typical Augusts go, at least for the first 10 days of the month.

Interruptions in an otherwise fair weather pattern courtesy of  a trough in eastern Canada will come in the form of a cold front  passing through the region from west to east through early Friday, and a secondary disturbance crossing the area on Saturday. There may be a cloud-producing disturbance or two during the course of early to mid next week, but a largely dry weather pattern will have become established.

Forecast for southeastern New England (southern NH, eastern MA, and RI)…

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Episodes of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms. Patchy fog forming overnight. More humid. Lows in the 60s. Wind SW-S 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy through mid morning with lingering showers/thunderstorms. Partly to mostly sunny late morning on. Humid morning then gradually drying afternoon. Highs middle 70s to lower 80s, coolest  South Coast. Wind SW-W 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows upper 50s to lower 60s. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Slight chance of a couple passing showers or thunderstorms mainly afternoon to early evening. Highs upper 70s to middle 80s. Wind W 10-20 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy early. Mostly clear late. Lows upper 50s to lower 60s. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny morning. Partly sunny afternoon. Highs 75-80. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 56. High 78.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 59. High 79.

WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 56. High 78.

THURSDAY: Increasing clouds. Low 57. High 77.

Bye Bye July

8:38PM

July, we  bid you farewell. A month hotter than average and a little wetter than average in most of the region. As August arrives, we’ll watch a cold front sweep across the region Thursday night and Friday morning, bringing some showers and thunderstorms to the region. This will set up a decent first weekend of the month, though we cannot rule out a shower or storm sometime on Sunday. Looking into next week, though we’ll be in a mean trough position, the weather will be largely dry with the air seasonable to cooler than normal.

First More, Second Less

12:29AM

An area of high pressure holds on to provide another spectacular day for the final day of July, though an upper level trough departing to the northeast will still trigger some developing diurnal clouds today.

A cold front approaches Thursday but slowly enough that the day itself should be fine with clouds, showers, and thunderstorms holding off until nighttime. This front looks a little stronger than it did yesterday and therefore it may produce fairly widespread showers and storms, which will linger into Friday as the front slowly clears the coast.

The general pattern repeats again over the weekend, but a second front coming along Sunday looks much weaker and may produce only cloudiness with shower activity absent.

A comfortable air mass is expected to arrive at the beginning of next week, quite nice for August, which can often feature very warm and muggy weather.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England (southern NH, eastern MA, RI)…

TODAY: Sunny morning. Partly cloudy afternoon. Highs 78-83, cooling near the coast. Wind NW to N 5-10 MPH turning E to SE in the afternoon.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 58. High 79.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Low 57. High 77.

Two Comfy

7:41AM

After a case of the muggies, ending with a spectacular sky courtesy scattered thunderstorms in a no-haze environment late Monday, we are in for 2 comfortable days thanks to a bubble of high pressure and drier air from Canada as July concludes.

Humidity will return, though not to excess, during the first few days of August, with heat absent, but some warmth certainly in place. Interruptions to a nice weather pattern will come from a couple cold fronts passing by (Thursday night and early Friday for the first one and sometime Sunday for the other).

Forecast for southeastern New England…

The Week Ahead

11:58AM (FIRST POST) / 8:40PM (EDIT TO REMOVE SUNDAY AFTERNOON FORECAST) / 11:59PM (EDIT TO REMOVE SUNDAY NIGHT FORECAST)

JULY ENDS NICELY

The last 3 days of July will trend to very nice Summer weather after an unsettled beginning early Monday as a cold front moves slowly eastward off the coast. It will take a while for the humidity to be replaced by drier air, so Monday will still be a somewhat humid day, warming up as sun replaces clouds, and after some morning showers and possibly a thunderstorm around the region I still cannot rule out a pop up shower or storm in the afternoon, though chances will likely decrease as the day goes on. Upper level low pressure will be moving eastward north of the region as surface high pressure builds in on Tuesday, and this means that some clouds will have to share the sky with sunshine, but it will be a nice summer day overall. Even more sun will dominate Wednesday as high pressure dominates. Dew points will be lower with comfortable air Tuesday into Wednesday, and though the humidity may begin to creep upward later Wednesday, it will probably go unnoticed.

AUGUST’S EARLY DAYS UNSETTLED BUT NOT TOO BAD

The first 4 days of August will feature a pattern of a digging trough of low pressure into the Great Lakes and high pressure off the East Coast. A couple cold fronts will pass through the region during this time (early guess on timing suggests early Friday and early Sunday). There will be a few episodes of showers and thunderstorms during this stretch, but much of the time will end up being rain-free.

PUTTING IT TOGETHER…

Forecast for southeastern New England (southern NH, RI, and eastern MA)…

Split Weekend

7:46AM

High pressure brings great summer weather today before a cold front approaching from the west brings much more cloudiness and episodes of showers and possible thunderstorms Sunday, lingering into Monday before another area of high pressure returns nice summer weather to the region Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. This is how the final 5 days of July are expected to go. The first couple days of August (Thursday-Friday) look humid with a shower and thunderstorm threat.

Rain Punch

9:50PM

The cold front that barely made it through the region Wednesday is sitting just southeast of New England and on Thursday served as a lifting ramp for warm air trying to come back into the region but riding up over a wedge of cooler air near the surface. This created clouds and eventually rain that moved into the region. A wave of low pressure on the front will bring a stronger punch of rain overnight and early Friday, especially to eastern areas. Rainfall amounts of 0.25 to 1.50 inch additional are expected through Friday morning, with some areas of Cape Cod probably seeing greater than 1.50 inch. As low pressure crosses Cape Cod and then moves northward into Maine during Friday, the rain will taper off but clouds will be stubborn. But by Saturday, the clouds will have departed and the nasty weather will be replaced by a very nice summer day. This will not last, as a cold front approaching from the west will return clouds and eventually showers and thunderstorms to southeastern New England from west to east on Sunday. Showers will linger Monday as the front slowly moves offshore. A couple of nice summer days are expected Tuesday-Wednesday next week as high pressure takes control.

Forecast for southeastern New England (southern NH, eastern MA, and RI)…
