Memorial Day Weekend!

9:00AM

This is what happens when you are not home enough to update as much as you want… A holiday weekend sneaks up on you. But here I am, on this fine Saturday morning, before being out again most of the weekend. Hey at least most of it’s fun stuff! 🙂

Let’s skip the technical discussion and just get right to the forecast for the Boston area, and we’ll talk more about upcoming patterns in a longer discussion later this weekend. 🙂

The Week Ahead

 9:30PM

OVERVIEW…

Tonight, ladies and gentleman, I’ll be venturing further out on the limb than usual, and forecasting out 9 days, taking us not all the way through the Memorial Day Weekend, but through the final day of May. Keep in mind, that as we get out in time, forecast confidence lessens, but this will be the best shot I can give it for now, so please return for updates!

SYNOPSIS…

A warm front will push slowly eastward across New England Monday, with cloudy and damp weather. A cold front will approach on Tuesday, but ahead of it we will see a taste of summer weather. Showers/thunderstorms will accompany the front which will pass through the region Tuesday night. Expect a wave of low pressure to slow the departure of this front and produce some rain early Wednesday. An area of high pressure is expected to bring drier weather to the region on Thursday. Another front will bring another chance of showers and thunderstorms to the area on Friday. Memorial Day Weekend should find the region in the middle of a transition to a new weather pattern. Forecast models vary, with some showing a front stuck in the vicinity with periods of showers. Another projection is building a ridge of high pressure off the US East Coast, keeping shower activity well to the west and bringing a more summery weather pattern in. I’m torn at the moment as to how this is going to play out, so for now I am going with a slow transition from scenario 1 (the showery one) to scenario 2 (the summery one), as we go through the holiday weekend into the final days of May.

Mid-Weekend Update

7:30PM

Greetings readers! Hope you are all enjoying the weekend. Today was nicer than I had forecast, but no complaints, right? I’d rather be wrong that way than have forecast nice weather for it only to turn out bad.

Awesome bank of fog/stratus rolling westward across Metro Boston at this time (Saturday evening 7:20PM as I write this). This is a signal of a cloudy/cool Sunday ahead. But I do not expect any rain. Warmer times are ahead again for part of next week. Details to come, including a look into Memorial Day Weekend on tomorrow’s blog. But for now, here’s my best ideas for the next several days for the Boston area…

TONIGHT: Becoming cloudy. Areas of fog. Low 45 to 50. Wind E up to 10 mph.

SUNDAY: Cloudy. Areas of fog near the coast. High 50 to 55 coast, 55 to 60 inland. Wind E up to 10 mph.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Areas of fog. Low 45 to 50. Wind SE up to 10 mph.

In The Dank Tank

8:00PM

No need to go into a discussion about what you already know. We’re stuck in the gloom. There are signs of a lessening of this, but not a complete break of the pattern. In fact, we could tank again for a few days next week, but that’s getting ahead of ourselves a bit.

Here’s an updated forecast for the Boston area…

THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT: Overcast with periods of drizzle, areas of fog, occasional showers (some heavy) and a slight chance of thunderstorms. Temperatures ranging from the upper 40s to middle 50s over most of the region throughout this period. Winds mostly NE to SE 5 to 15 mph but periods of stronger winds are possible along the coast.

The Week Ahead

4:45PM

I am an exception to the rule. I know this. I like the weather pattern I am about to report to you. But since most of you will not share my opinion, I will keep it short and you can just swallow it fast, like icky medicine. So here goes…

The next 7 days will be ruled by persistent upper level low pressure, and therefore will be largely unsettled. Temperatures will run below normal. Wet weather, though not constant, will be frequent. It isn’t impossible that we can sneak in a few periods of sunshine somewhere…maybe…possibly, but we’ll see about that. So with that in mind, I’ll just go right to the forecast details for the Boston area. If you live somewhere outside of this area but are still in southern New England, it will probably be similar. If you are not sure where you live, ask me and we’ll try to help you figure it out…. Joke, sorry. 🙂

TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Areas of fog. Episodes of showers. Heaviest showers are most likely parts of tonight to very early Monday, late Monday night and early Tuesday, and late Tuesday night to early Wednesday, when thunderstorms are also possible, though rain or drizzle can be falling at any time. Least likely time to see any rain falling will be Monday and Tuesday afternoons. Overnight lows 50 to 55. Daytime highs 55 to 60, some lower 60s away from the coast. Wind NE to SE 5 to 15 mph but often very light.

THURSDAY: Cloudy. Periods of rain. Low 52. High 60.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Numerous showers. Low 53. High 64.

SATURDAY: Variably cloudy. Isolated showers. Low 49. High 61.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers. Low 51. High 65.

Spinning Wheel’s Wetting Us Down

3:05AM

(Blood, Sweat, & Tears fans will get the reference in the headline above, otherwise just read on…)

Low pressure will spin in place over the Northeast for the next 6 days, providing daily episodes of showers and rain in one of the longer unsettled weather stretches we will see in some time. Many of you will not like this, unless perhaps you suffer pollen allergies. The frequent showers will keep pollen counts down.

Boston Area Forecast…

TODAY: Cloudy with episodes of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms. Some areas may be rain-free for lengthy stretches of time. High 60 to 65. Wind S around 10 mph shifting to SE late.

TONIGHT: Cloudy. Showers likely. Chance of thunderstorms. Some heavy rain is possible. Low near 50. Wind SE 5 to 15 mph.

MONDAY: Cloudy. Showers early in the morning. Isolated showers return lat in the day. High 60 to 65. Wind SE 5 to 15 mph.

MONDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Showers likely. Low 45 to 50. Wind E 5 to 10 mph.

TUESDAY: Cloudy. Showers early. Chance of drizzle. High 53 to 58. Wind NE 5 t0 15 mph.

WEDNESDAY: Early showers. Low 49. High 59.

THURSDAY: Rain likely. Low 51. High 60.

FRIDAY: Chance of showers & thunderstorms. Low 54. High 70.

SATURDAY: Partly sunny. Low 51. High 63.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 45. High 62.

Friday Forecast Update

12:01AM

The general idea of the previous discussion holds with regard to the upcoming weather system. I still think we will be surrounded by unsettled weather the next couple days but escape much of it. Not expecting bright sunny days today or Saturday, but I do expect it to be rain-free. This may even hold well into Sunday, though at this point I have to go for more substantial cloudiness and introduce the chance of some showers on Sunday.

Looking into next week. If you like it unsettled, it’ll be your week I think – at least the first half of it.

Boston area forecast…

THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows generally in the upper 40s. Highs generally in the 60s except cooler along the coast. Wind mostly E 5 to 15 mph through Friday night, then SE to S Saturday and Saturday night.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. High 62 to 67 except cooler south-facing coastal areas.

MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY: Episodes of showers or rain. Lows upper 40s to lower 50s. Highs middle 50s to middle 60s, coolest near the coast.

Sit & Spin

A storm sitting and spinning off the coast is sending clouds & scattered showers/drizzle into eastern Massachusetts and will continue to do so through Wednesday. No widespread heavy rain is expected. Areas far inland have seen little effect from this storm with more sunshine & warmer temperatures. This storm will wander away during Thursday with improving conditions over eastern Massachusetts. High pressure will build down from Canada late this week into the weekend, and though it is a tricky forecast, I believe that this high will be strong enough to keep unsettled weather south and west of the Boston area for Friday and the weekend. Next week may be a different story. More on that later. For now, details for the Boston area through the coming weekend…

THROUGH WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Scattered showers and areas of drizzle, especially through Wednesday morning. Low 45 to 50. High 55 to 60. Wind N 10 to 20 mph gusting as high as 30 mph.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Low 45 to 50. Wind N 10 to 15 mph.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. High 65 to 70. Wind N to NW 10 to 15 mph becoming variable.

FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY: Variably cloudy including episodes of sunshine all 3 days. Lows generally in the upper 40s to middle 50s. Highs generally in the 60s but cooler along the coast.

The Week Ahead

11:00PM

Low pressure will spin just off the coast for the first few days of the week, keeping it cool and at times unsettled in eastern New England. By Thursday, this low should move far enough east and a ridge of high pressure should move overhead to bring brighter, warmer weather for a day, before a new high pressure area to the north sends a cold front southward across the area with a late-week cooling trend.

Details for the Boston area…

MONDAY: Partly cloudy. High 55 to 60 coast ranging to 65 to 70 well inland. Wind N to NE 10 to 15 mph.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Low 45 to 50. Wind NE 10 to 15 mph.

TUESDAY: Cloudy. Slight chance of light rain or drizzle. High 53 to 58. Wind NE 10 to 20 mph and gusty.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Chance of drizzle. Low 44 to 49. Wind NE 10 to 20 mph.

WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Chance of drizzle. High 54 to 59. Wind NE 10 to 20 mph.

THURSDAY: Sunny. Low 49. High 65.

FRIDAY: Variably cloudy. Low 48. High 61.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 47. High 60.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 48. High 63.

Weekend Update…Cool Days Ahead!

7:30PM

Showers and thunderstorms have been around since early afternoon, and though not everybody has been hit significantly, some areas did see hail and locally gusty winds with some of the storms today. Activity is beginning to wind down now, but there are still some scattered showers and storms around this evening as a disturbance slowly wheels its way across New England from west to east. This disturbance will help ignite an ocean storm just offshore during the remainder of the weekend, which will then hang around for the first few days of the upcoming week.  Basically, this means we won’t see much sunshine around here (though there may be a little tomorrow morning) into the middle of next week. Some periods of wet weather are also possible during this stretch of mostly cloudy weather. Temperatures will also be running below normal as the predominant wind direction will be north to northeast.

Details for the Boston area…

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms decreasing and ending, though some locations may still see localized downpours and hail early. Low 45 to 50. Wind W up to 10 mph except locally gusty and variable near storms early, then shifting to N 5 to 10 mph later.

SUNDAY – MOTHER’S DAY: Partly sunny in the morning. Mostly cloudy with scattered showers in the afternoon. High 60 to 65. Wind N 5 to 15 mph.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers early. Low 45 to 50. Wind N 5 to 15 mph.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Isolated showers. High 57 to 62 except 52 to 57 along the coast. Wind N to NE 10 to 15 mph.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 47. High 58.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 46. High 61.

THURSDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 45. High 64.

FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Low 48. High 65.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 47. High 62.

Boston Area Forecast

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Low 50 to 55. Wind SW 10 to 20 mph decreasing to under 10 mph.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon. Thunderstorms may produce strong winds, downpours, and hail in some locations. High 65 to 70. Wind SW 15 to 25 mph.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms early, then tapering off. Low 45 to 50. Wind shifting to N 10 to 20 mph.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy. High 50 to 55. Wind NE 10 to 20 mph.

MONDAY: Partly sunny. Low 44. High 61.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 48. High 64.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 51. High 65.

Unsettled Stretch

A slow-moving cold front is touching off showers and a few thunderstorms at this time, and this will continue for a few more hours (into the evening). A pool of cold air aloft will then cross the region Thursday, keeping clouds dominant and providing a risk of more showers. This upper level cold pool will be slow to exit late this week and a couple other disturbances will insure we don’t see complete clearing Friday or Saturday.

Forecast details for the Boston area…

THROUGH EVENING: Mainly cloudy with episodes of showers and a chance of thunderstorms. Heavy downpours at times will reduce visibility and cause ponding of water on some roadways. Temperature falling into the 50s. Wind W 5 to 15 mph with higher gusts.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy.  Scattered to numerous showers. High 50 to 55. Wind N 10 to 15 mph.
