Wednesday December 11 2024 Forecast (7:45AM)

DAYS 1-5 (DECEMBER 11-15)

A strong cold front approaches from the west today, passing through the region this evening. This slow-moving boundary will see a couple waves of low pressure move up along it, the last of which will help swing the front through later this evening. Before that, the last of the cold air trapped at the surface is in the process of being scoured out and the balance of today will be dominated by waves of widespread rain showers, some heavy, which may include thunder this evening as the last of it moves through, as well as a strong, gusty southerly wind and a push of much milder air as well. Hazards today include ponding of water on roadways, especially poor-drainage areas, with some flooding during the heavier rainfall episodes, as well as damaging wind gusts which can lead to isolated power outages. Later tonight, behind the front, we clear out and get colder, and some areas of black ice may form by morning as the wind shifts and drops off. Thursday and Friday will be windy days with a colder trend in a westerly flow behind the front, with mainly dry weather and just a chance of a few passing rain/snow showers later Thursday and snow flurries on Friday. High pressure brings dry weather and more tranquil conditions this weekend, with most sun and Saturday and somewhat less sun on Sunday as the next low pressure area tries to approach, but is held off by the high pressure area.

TODAY: Cloudy. Numerous to widespread rain showers. Highs 55-62. Wind S 15-30 MPH, gusts 35-55 MPH, strongest in coastal locations.

TONIGHT: Cloudy evening with widespread rain showers and a chance of a thunderstorm. Rain showers ending with clouds breaking overnight. Lows 32-39. Wind S 15-35 MPH with higher gusts, shifting to W from west to east and diminishing overnight.

THURSDAY: Sun/cloud mix. A slight chance of a passing snow shower late in the day except rain or snow shower near the coast. Highs 38-45. Wind W 15-25 MPH, higher gusts.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Slight chance of a passing snow shower. Lows 20-27. Wind W 10-20 MPH, higher gusts. Wind chill below 20.

FRIDAY: Sun/cloud mix. Slight chance of a passing snow shower. Highs 32-39. Wind W 10-20 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 16-23. Wind NW under 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 32-39. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 15-22. Wind calm.

SUNDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 33-40. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

      1. I remember walking around the reservoir in Belmont in my new sweater …no jacket…in Christmas Day. I think it was the one year we were not able to ski because of rain. First and only time and we went every Christmas vacation from the time I was two until around early 70s

  1. Thanks, TK.

The HRRR seems to be trending to stronger wind gusts throughout the last 24 hours. The 13z HRRR has a 69-mph wind gust over my house at 8 pm.

  2. Some schools in eastern CT early dismissal today. Good call since that part of the state will have the worst of the weather coming in at normal dismissal time.

    1. 1,020 days and counting. At least through December 22 according to the models. No opportunities for snow through next week at least.

  3. Pretty strong band of wind and rain coming through Middleborough now. Nothing on early dismissals here. Unless it’s a dire emergency or a long-term power outage, they probably won’t call an early dismissal at this point. It would be a huge inconvenience for families to drop everything at work and go home or pick up their kiddos.

I am hoping afternoon and evening events get cancelled. Parent conferences are still scheduled for tonight!

  4. No wind here. Still 42. 0.77

Oddest thing though. While rain of course is vertical, there are bands of what looks like low fog traveling across the rain parallel to the ground. Very interesting.

  5. Thanks Jimmy for posting that historical info on that December 10-12, 1960 snowstorm! I was only about 2 weeks old so I have ZERO memory obviously. ❄️ 🙂

JPD or Vicki…Did that snow last on the ground through Christmas Day? Just wondering. 🙂

    1. That I can’t remember for sure, but I would say so. It was a crapload of snow. 🙂
the other 2 biggies that Winter were the inaugural day storm of 1/20/1960 and the Ground Hog Day storm of 2/2/1961.

All three delivered well over a foot of snow each. 🙂

  6. Thanks, TK.

I’ll periodically post a few comments here and there, as WHW has been my favorite blog to post on. It’s you and the WHW folks that have made it great for many years.

    – Temps in the 60s are fairly common in winter around here. I can remember them as far back as the early 70s in Needham. All it takes is a southerly breeze, frankly. We know how warm it almost always is around, say, the Gulf of Mexico. And as I recall usually the spike in temperature to the 60s was short-lived and often followed by considerable drops in temps.

    – The Atlantic storm parade hitting the British Isles and parts of Northwestern Europe this month has packed quite a series of punches: In quick succession, storms named Conall, Darragh, and Eowyn have produced (severe) gales with hurricane-force gusts, especially across coastal Ireland and the west coast of Wales and England. I’ll soon be headed to that part of the world for fairly long stretches of time. One thing I will miss is Boston’s weather, particularly the cold, sunny days of winter. We’ve had some gems recently. Cold, sunny days are infrequent in Britain, and that’s an understatement. What we experienced yesterday here was far more typical of the weather I’ll be having soon. Tack on a few degrees, say, up to ~42F, and gray, overcast, and often foggy days are the norm from November through February.

  7. I just read this headline. I’m dashing to my bomb shelter!

“Atmospheric river brings weather whiplash to East Coast as bomb cyclone develops”

  8. We are at 55. If I look away from my sensor and look back almost right away, temp has gone up a degree. 0.93 inch and wind picking up some

  9. 12Z GFS shows this system changing to a few inches of snow for the Greens in VT. At least that will replace a little bit of the snow
    that will be lost today.

  10. Thanks TK. Cold few days coming back. Wish we could get one of these rainstorms as snow. Doesn’t look too promising. Happy holidays to all.

    1. MJO, as I’ve said many times now, is not our friend, and hasn’t been for a while (going back a few winters as well).

  11. Joshua, glad to see you here . Happy Holidays!

I posted today for the first time in many months. My husband and me have been dealing with a lot of illnesses and there is still more problems and decisions we have to make regarding health issues. I have been on this blog for maybe 20 yrs. I think. I still love talking and observing the weather but with both of us in and out of the hospital, it has been hard. I have started decorating for Christmas but I hope we will be able to enjoy it. Looking forward to posting more and hearing from you all.

      1. crap, he was 6-12 last year. GIMMIE a break!

Typical Red Sox move and they are going to try and pawn this off as a great move. If you ask me, it’s more of the same BS
        from the Red Sox!!!!

        1. According to the Red Sox he was considered the TOP
starting pitcher available in the trade market.
Not much of a market, I’d Say.

Am I Jaded? You betcha. Talk to me next Summer.

      2. He’s young and cheap, that’s why they got him. I agree, not an ace but a solid 2/3. They gave up a highly touted catcher prospect. These are the kind of deals they have to settle for since they can’t seem to land the big fishes anymore

        1. Right, exactly. We shall see how he pans out.
Only 25 and he is a BIG DUDE!!!

6-6 and 245 pounds. Wonder how fast he can bring it.

          Not too shabby!!!

Garrett Crochet, a pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, throws a four-seam fastball that averages 97.2 miles per hour (mph) and can top out at 100.4 mph:

          Average speed: 97.2 mph
          Top speed: 100.4 mph
Spin rate: 2,500 revolutions per minute (RPM)
Release point: 6.1 ft from the ground
Movement: 8 in away from a right-handed batter and 13 in drop

Garrett Crochet deals in White Sox extra-innings win vs …
Crochet also throws a cutter that averages 91.6 mph and tops out at 96.2 mph. He also mixes in a slider and changeup.
Crochet has thrown 45 pitches at 100 mph or more, which is second only to Nate Jones among White Sox pitchers in the pitch-tracking era. Crochet has also thrown 69 pitches at 99 mph or more, which is the highest percentage of pitches at that speed by a pitcher with at least 50 pitches in a season.

Player Card: Garrett Crochet – Brooks Baseball
Garrett Crochet has thrown 3,894 pitches that have been tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2020 and 2024,

  12. The White Sox tried to trade Crochet at the trade deadline last season. Crochet came out and said he would not pitch in the postseason unless he got an extension from the team that traded for him and the White Sox were unable to trade him.

    1. Well that’s not a good sign. Doesn’t seem to have the competitive edge. He still has 2 years left on his current deal. He needs to go pound sand.

  13. Logan now gusting to 33.
Marshfield airport gusting to 50 mph.

Windy enough here that we can HEAR the GUSTS. That’s when i know it is WINDY. 🙂

  14. The temperature on my thermometer and a nearby weather station are both 37, the high so far today.

I wonder where the Weather Channel gets the temperature for Lunenburg. It’s 52. Maybe they’re trying to get to the 60 that they predicted 🙂

  15. Let’s not kid ourselves. 60-65 in December is not as rare as many are lead to believe by media.

Anonamous quote from a local source: “60+ is unheard of in December for Boston”. Fact: It’s not unheard of. Not even close.

Let’s first go back to the 1960s…
Boston hit 60 or higher at least once in 1962, 1964, 1965, 1966 (3 times including a high of 70), 1969. Most of the years that missed 60 had monthly highs of 58 or 59.

    Now the 1970s…
Boston hit 60 or higher at least once in 1971 (twice), 1972, 1973 (3 times), 1975 (3 times), 1978, 1979 (twice, including a high of 68). Most of the years that missed 60 had monthly highs of 58 or 59 (again).

    And the 1980s…
Boston hit 60 or higher at least once in 1980 (twice), 1982 (SEVEN times including TWO highs of 70), 1984 (4 times including a high of 70), 1985, 1986, 1988. With the exception of 1989 which had a high of 53 on Dec 31 after the coldest December on record, the years that missed saw monthly highs just below 60.

So yeah, just looking back at those 3 decades from last century, it’s actually somewhat common for Boston to have at LEAST one 60+ degree day in December.

    1. Looked ahead to the 2010s…

60+ at least once in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018, and 2019. Most of these were just once, and most of them were lower 60s (one upper 60s).

Pretty much the same # as the 1980s (just not as warm on the maxes as the 1980s).

        1. Oh I don’t listen to sources that are not legitimate. As you can tell I don’t even read them through. I had posted Eric’s tweet about 60 earlier so wondered

  16. A lot of mini power hits here in the last hour, but thankfully, so far so good.

It kind of reminds me of what might happen if a branch is tapping a wire somewhere nearby.

Hopefully, it doesn’t get any worse than that…

We have about four hours to go before the wind drops off considerably.

    1. Sound of the gusts here is loud !

Not sure if a recycle bin went flying and hit pavement, but something made a loud thud. Its our trash day today.

  17. One rumble of thunder about 4:15PM here.
Winds have been “decent” but not ferocious.
Main thin convective line is forming right on I-95 now.
    HRRR nailed it .. again.

No record temp for Boston today.

      1. That should be the end of the highest gusts, for the most part. But the eastward movement is slow so it’ll take a while for the winds to simmer down – it’ll be a slow process west to east the next few hours.

  18. Who remembers this one from 1975? I think it aired once (maybe twice). Features Roberta Flack on vocals (performs 5 songs). Narration by “Squire Badger” aka Buddy Ebsen. 🙂

Paul Winchell provides the voice of Turtle. Winchell is of course most famous for voicing Tigger from Winnie The Pooh.

Allan Melvin provides the voice of Horace Hawk. Allan is, of course, Sam The Butcher on The Brady Bunch.

  19. Wind is absolutely roaring in pembroke big time . Power & cable gojng in & out & it’s just a matter of time before it’s out for good . This is 100% damaging wind .

    1. It’s crazy. We haven’t really had a break all day from the moderate and heavy rain. Looking forward to the end and will probably end up right around 3 inches.

  20. Up to 2.12” of rain here in Coventry CT and temp down to 49 after a high of 60 earlier. Run of the mill rain/wind storm here and havent heard of any damage or outages in town.

    1. I was going to say run of the mill here also but am seeing reports of a roof collapse in a 1930s building in Uxbridge center. Praying everyone is all right but afraid people who live in apartments and businesses in that area will be heavily impacted.

        1. No trees near. Newest reports say it is a brick covering connecting two older buildings, All 1930s-ish. It seems to have compromised both buildings I can’t imagine how weather caused it

  21. Snowing now on the Stratton webcam. Hopefully they can recover a few inches. Only saving grace up there is that it never really got all that mild for very long despite the rain.

  22. Down to 40 here, temp is really crashing now. Rain has ended. Looks like 2.17” is going to be our total.

Up to just shy of 52” on the year so looks like despite the drought we are still going to end up above normal on precip for the year thanks largely to a very wet summer here in CT.

  23. Its generally been in the 60s here for highs with the occasional day of 70s or 80s but they tend to have rain late afternoon or over night followed by several days of clouds and 50s. One thing I miss about the Caribbean being able to go to the beach to swim. Water is to cold waiting for that wet suit lol. what I don’t miss the excessive heat index over 100 all the time.

  24. 2.76” at Logan (Boston), a new record.

I would say the next Drought Monitor Map to be wiped clean! 🙂

Of course there is still the matter of the “snow” drought…oh well. 1,021
