DAYS 1-5 (JANUARY 30 – FEBRUARY 3)
We’re in a pattern with a lot of changes, but no big storms. Yesterday’s fluffy snow was replaced with a relatively mild day which erased what fell, then a cold front brought some rain and snow showers to the region to return wind and cold to the region last night, and while the wind will be less gusty today it’ll be a cold day with dry weather as high pressure moves in. But things keep on moving and Friday’s weather will be impacted by an elongated area of low pressure moving through. This time, the air is to be mild enough that much of the region sees a light rain event, but there can be some snow/mix to start this early Friday and some additional frozen stuff at the end on Friday night. This is followed by a chilly and mainly dry weekend, but by late Sunday the next system heads our way via the Great Lakes with clouds and a potential for a light snowfall by Sunday night. Similar to the system we had yesterday, this system looks like it’s low center will pass just to our north, so Monday ends up as a milder day with a chance of a few rain showers before the cold air makes a return.
TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 23-30. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts in the morning.
TONIGHT: Clouding up. Lows 12-19 evening, rising through 20s overnight. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.
FRIDAY: Cloudy. Rain arrives by midday, may start as snow/mix north of I-90. Highs 36-43. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.
FRIDAY NIGHT: Cloudy evening with rain and pockets of freezing rain, potentially turning to sleet/snow before ending, with a minor accumulation possible. Areas of smooth black ice become likely where there is no frozen precipitation accumulation. Lows 20-27. Wind variable to N increasing to 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY: Sunny to partly cloudy. Highs 27-34. Wind NW 10-20 MPH.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 15-22. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
SUNDAY: Increasing clouds. Highs 27-34. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Chance of snow, may end as a snow/rain mix. Lows 20-27 early, then rising into the 30s. Wind variable to S 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of a rain shower. Highs 41-48. Wind S 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.
DAYS 6-10 (FEBRUARY 4-8)
Dry, colder February 4. Watching for a wave of low pressure to pass by quickly with maybe a period of snow briefly on February 5. Another unsettled episode with rain/mix/snow possible later in the period.
DAYS 11-15 (FEBRUARY 9-13)
Pattern features a battle zone between cold weather to our north and a milder set-up to our south. This leaves our region vulnerable to unsettled weather on a frequent basis with variable temperatures.
Good morning and thank you TK
Surprised you didn’t mention the streamer off of Lake Ontario that dropped a healthy dusting of snow around 11PM or so last night. That doesn’t happen very often, that’s for sure I have seen it before.
I think I recall you mentioned the possibility of a snow shower for last noght in yesterdat’s blog post. Great call.
I referred to it in the comments on yesterday’s post in reply to what Tom experienced. I had those snow showers in the forecast as they were something we see in this type of a set-up especially with the larger temperature drops (quite mild yesterday afternoon to quite cold today). HRRR and higher res NAMs had them pretty well predicted.
excellent.
with the wind, it looked like a mini blizzard for awhile, even though the snow was generally light
Nice description JpDave.
I missed it last night. Once the Celtics game ended about 9:45pm, I went to sleep.
🙂
Thanks, TK!
Thanks TK !
Thanks TK.
1,070 ❄️
And counting…..
Hopefully the counting will end in February.
Snowfall to date: ❄️
ORH = 19.2”
BOS = 13.9”
NYC = 5.8”
Hopefully the upcoming battle of the airmasses next month will be setting up more to our south than north.
Thank you TK!
Very sad day to say the least! It’s no longer a rescue effort, it’s a recovery effort. The waters of the Potomac are certainly cold though I am not sure if they are icy. Either way recovery will be difficult. Hard to understand how this could have happened.
Agree. Watched a couple of different videos over and over again.
Unless the 2 different videos were fake, it clearly showed
the helicopter crashing directly into the airliner which was
making a standard approach to the runway. AND the helicopter had PLENTY of time to take evasive maneuvers!!!
Something wasn’t right, that’s for sure! I just hope there
is full disclosure and nothing is hidden from us. yeah, fat chance of that, especially with this administration.
If I read correctly, the helicopter was on a training mission.
Well, they were NOT NOT NOT trained well!!!!
NO EXCUSE for this one. NONE whatsoever!!!
Were they flying blind? they could SEE the damn plane
right in from of them, yet they continued to fly right into it.
Inquiring minds might think it was purposeful.
My exact thoughts! The other question that comes to mind is was ATC talking to the helicopter pilot. If they were, then they should have told the pilot to stop or redirect their heading.
It looked as if the helicopter was on a straight course. But others interviewed last night said something about the plane banking and having a blind spot. I don’t know enough but wonder why radar didn’t pick that up.
No Matter what the plane was doing, the helicopter
had the airline in plane sight right it front of it.
Airliner had ample running lights light. Could NOT be missed. Simply NO EXCUSE for this one. NONE.
I sure would agree. My thoughts as I listened were that even if plane had a blind spot, the black hawk was heading directly toward the plane and had to have seen it. I am not sure we will ever know what happened. It’s already been turned into a political witch hunt.
No accident. GROSS negligence at best, purposeful event at worse.
With a very heavy heart, I’m hearing from a friend and on the news that six on the plane were a combination of coaches, parents and teen skates from the Boston skating club in Norwood. I am not as sure but also heard others were skaters from Russia.
Yes, 2 of the coaches were x-Russian figure skating stars.
So so sad!! I can’t believe it.
First crash of US airliner since 2009. That’s a nice long stretch, but anytime this happens, not long enough!!!
So sad.
It seems there has been more than one close call lately.
12Z NAM would have the rain change to SNOW overnight tomorrow:

3KM NAM as well, although not as robust

Didn’t someone who hosts this blog share this concern
yesterday??? Hmmm seems to me that it was so.
Thanks TK
Just read on yahoo 6 victims from the Boston skating club.
Yes, saw that. When did the Boston Skating Club
move from Brighton to Norwood?
My daughter used to take figure skating lessons
at the Boston Skating club and I played hockey there
on many occasions.
Sorry. I was reading down. So sad.
12Z RDPS not on board with the switch to snow

So, a wide range of outcomes, but the majority consensus favors a switch to SNOW!
Thanks Tk . Just getting into Boston , not a bad day at all today . I’m wearing a vest & I am comfortable. The wind was so bad at my location last night.
HRRR, too little to late, but still a touch of snow

This BBC article has an interesting discussion about the airspace in which this terrible tragedy occurred:
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cpdx6le5l27o
Interesting indeed. Thank you, SClarke
Thanks, TK.
Terrible tragedy over the Potomac. As we know, the river has been the scene of another mid-winter tragedy in 1982.
I’ve posted before about the weather icons that pop up in the tray on PCs and their general uselessness. Well, now they’re really useless. While they provide an outdoor temperature somewhere in the vicinity (it doesn’t say where) as well as an icon telling you the general weather in the vicinity (mostly sunny, cloudy, rain, snow), the `forecasts’ are nonsensical. In the spate of 1 hour, it said “temperatures to plummet,” “temps to rise,” “cold weather,” and now “temps to rise.” How is this useful in any way?
Pure pieces of CRAP!!!
I trust my iPhone to at least give me the correct temperature at my specific location.
According to TK, it is generally correct. I have asked him about it here on the blog.
Wasn’t there a plane tragedy at Logan in 1982 as well? I recall that it was during the winter but I forget the month.
December? January? February?
Iirc the precipitation was sleet, freezing rain. I don’t believe there was any snow involved, at least not falling. I can’t swear though that there wasn’t snow on the grassy areas.
The plane overshot the runway and landed in Boston harbor.
I don’t know the year, but I seem to remember a plane that partially overshot the runway and the piece that did, fell into Boston Harbor and I feel like one passenger in the row where the plane split, fell into the harbor and drowned ??????
I found this. All but two passengers were saved.

Ah, thanks Vicki !!
Yes, Thanks Vicki! At least I was correct on the year (1982) and season (winter).
You were correct on all. My memory was far more vague than yours.
I am ashamed to say I’d forgotten about the 1961 crash that took the lives of our skating team members. Boston skating club lost some of its team in that crash also.
https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/figure-skating-plane-crash-1961-boston-club/
I landed at Ronald Reagan airport once and have to say it was by far the scariest landing I have ever experienced. I honestly did not think we were ever going to land. The amount of twists and turns we took on approach was frightening.
Very Scary.
It is being reported that the ATC reached out to the helicopter seconds before the collision…twice….but the helicopter didn’t respond.
https://people.com/air-traffic-controller-asked-helicopter-if-the-american-airlines-jet-was-visible-seconds-before-crash-8782908
Landed there once before as well. No incident, no close calls, just a routine landing. I guess we were lucky. 🙂
My Weekend Outlook is up:
https://stormhq.blog/2025/01/30/weekend-outlook-january-31-february-3-2025/
Thanks Sak . Time is flying & February usually goes by really quickly.
Well, sure as there are only 28 days. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Yeah Valentine’s comes quick & you got the Holiday weekend right after that & bang it’s March ( which in my opinion feels like it drags by)
So right!
March is the cruelest month of the year, imho fwiw. 🙂
Did someone mention overrunning events around here?????

WxW did yesterday, and as usual TK concurred! ❄️ 🙂
18Z NAM less bullish on SNOW tomorrow night than
the 12Z was
https://www.pivotalweather.com/model.php?rh=2025013018&fh=45&dpdt=&mc=&r=us_ne&p=snku_acc-imp&m=nam
Ditto and more with the 3KM NAM
https://www.pivotalweather.com/model.php?m=nam4km&p=snku_acc-imp&rh=2025013018&fh=45&r=us_ne&dpdt=&mc=
ICON as well
https://www.pivotalweather.com/model.php?m=icon&p=snku_acc-imp&rh=2025013018&fh=45&r=us_ne&dpdt=&mc=
BUT, now of all things, the 18Z RDPS is on board with snow where it was NOT on the 12Z run. I GIVE UP!!!
