DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 6-10)
Unsettled early spring weather continues, but there is a break in sight. You’ll need patience if you long for a nice fair weather day, however. First, we continue to be impacted by a frontal boundary and passing low pressure area today. The boundary which sat south of the region keeping us cool as the rain moved in yesterday will lift into the region today, allowing some brief warming mainly from the South Coast to the I-90 belt and maybe a bit further north. But it’s short-lived, and the boundary will head back south tonight. Rain showers will be most prominent in the region until midday, after which we will see a dry interlude for most of this afternoon and evening, while clouds continue to dominate. Any sun that breaks out before it sets would be a bonus, and would also allow it to get milder than forecast. Either way, chilly air comes back tonight and dominates through midweek. An additional wave of low pressure combined with the colder air brings some rain, sleet, and snow to the region at times Monday. I am not expecting an issue with accumulation of sleet or snow, but if it comes down heavily enough it could coat some surfaces temporarily. With surface temperatures above freezing, we won’t see the ice-up typical of what we’d see in winter. Nevertheless, if you do end up with a briefly slushy surface, use caution. One more disturbance has to go through the area early Tuesday, and a potent trough trailing from low pressure passing across northern New England can bring a band of snow/mix/rain showers, then just a few flurries/sprinkles behind it during the balance of the day Tuesday. Finally, a fair weather day Wednesday as low pressure moves away and high pressure approaches, but this means a gusty breeze is likely along with cool air dominant – though the sun will feel quite nice being at its almost mid-April angle. By Thursday, high pressure starts the day overhead with a chilly morning but then slides offshore, and while it turns out milder, we’ll see clouds advance ahead of our next “unsettled weather threat”. More on this in the next section after the detailed forecast through the next 5 days.
TODAY: Cloudy with rain showers and areas of drizzle / fog until midday. Mostly cloudy afternoon with a slight chance of a passing rain shower. Highs 48-55 north of I-90, 55-62 I-90 southward. Wind variable 5-15 MPH, SW for a while I-90 belt southward.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Rain shower chance increases overnight. Patchy fog. Lows 37-44. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY: Cloudy. Episodic rain/sleet/snow – frozen favoring interior higher elevations but possible anywhere, with brief slushy accumulation potential. Temperatures fall to 34-41 early then recover slightly to late highs 38-45. Wind N to NE 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Rain/snow showers possible overnight. Lows 33-40. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of rain/mix/snow showers, diminishing with time. Highs 41-48. Wind variable 5-15 MPH becoming NW 10-20 MPH.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Clearing. Lows 28-35. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Sunny to partly cloudy. Highs 45-52. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 25-32. Wind light variable.
THURSDAY: Sun followed by clouds. Highs 51-58, coolest coast. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.
DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 11-15)
Uncertainty on whether or not an initial low will impact the region April 11 with unsettled weather before a larger system takes shape to the south then moves up into the region during the April 12-13 weekend with more widespread precipitation and a return to below normal temperatures. Optimistic for a return to fair and slightly milder weather later in the period.
DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 16-20)
Overall pattern is cooler again. One or 2 episodes of unsettled weather are possible.
Thanks TK.

Thanks, TK.
I’m headed to England on the 15th. I should have gone there 10 days ago, however. They’re having their glorious weeks-long stretch of weather now. It’s courtesy of a strong and more or less stationary (for weeks on end) area of high pressure; a spring thing there, I’ve noticed over the years; too bad it tends not to show up in the other 3 seasons nearly as much.
I sincerely don’t understand why people get excited about spring here in SNE. Yes, the blossoms look nice, I guess. And you do have some beauties like Friday. But for the most part it’s downright miserable here. And, as I’ve said a zillion times, one day in late May/early June we’ll wake up and the switch to summer (skipping spring, more or less) will have occurred. It’ll be a 90F day with building humidity. There’s no doubt we have a season called summer, but spring not so much.
I’ll tell you why. I have lived here 57 years (almost 58), and I love all the seasons, including this one. I love the cycle. I love the fact we NEED weather like this to set off the healthy bloom that people will enjoy. I could go on, and on…but no further explanation is needed why at least this person gets excited about spring, summer, fall, and winter. I love the cycle of seasons, the cycle of life, just being part of it. That’s all there is to it.
People always say we “don’t have spring” here. That’s 100% incorrect. We DO. This is it – part of it. That’s the beauty. Spring is the season with the greatest range, from something that can remind you have the winter you just left, to the summer that’s coming. It’s like where it’s all disorganized before it gets itself back in order – a great reminder of the chaos which is a part of nature. So, instead of spending all my time wishing it wasn’t the time it is, I’ll spend it enjoying the time I have. It’s finite.
I meant to add on my post that This is where TK will chime in and say how much he loves this weather.
Can’t change my mind.
SPRING in SNE SUCKS BIG TIME!!!!!!
I mean it REALLY SUCKS!!! You can have it!!!
I’ll take it. It makes me happy.
Thanks!
I don’t care to change anyone’s mind, actually. I’m just very thankful I don’t feel the way others do. Life’s simply too short.
I concur. Spring in SNE for the most part is BRUTAL!!!!!
Most especially in Eastern sections near that ocean out there.
There have been some wonderful Springs, but they are few and far between.
Let’s hope the weather breaks before May or at least EARLY in MAY and that it does not linger into June or longer.
Good morning and thank you TK.
Another MISERABLE day. So what else is new!!!
I admire TK’s ability to see the beauty of spring here. I’m just not in that camp.
I like my camp better.
Right after I go grocery shopping for mom and bring her a brunch to enjoy, I’m heading out for a walk in the April rain. Rainy / cloudy photography is also one of my favorite things to do.
I walked the shore as usual this AM. Ran into misty sprinkles at the end and it was okay by me.
Incidentally, we need wet weather. The reservoirs need to recover somewhat and the drought needs relief. Spring plantings need rain too.
Speaking of drought, I have come to the conclusion, perhaps wrongly, that there is a lag effect between precipitation and improved drought conditions. Yes, I know one storm doesn’t do it, but even with continued precipitation the conditions seem to improve slowly.
I was going to bring that up too – the fact that this pattern is beneficial for drought relief. We don’t just have these deficits magically disappear.
Yes, there can be a lag, but it depends on the specifics and whether we’re talking direct water supply or agricultural development.
For the sports-minded bloggers.
1) The B’s actually won a game yesterday.
2) Ovechkin tied Gretzky for most goals by a single player in their career (894). Ovechkin could have gotten 895 but refused the empty net opportunity. Said he wants to do it the right way.
3) PGA tournament at 1 PM.
4) The Sox doubleheader at 1:35 PM and 7:10 PM.
5) The Women’s NCAA Final at 3 PM.
6. Celtics/Pelicans at the Garden at 6pm
Thank you.
Correction – Wizards. Pelicans was the game I was supposed to go to earlier in the year, but was sick and had to give away my tickets.
Thanks, TK
43 and 0.49″ for the event.
Because of the day-night doubleheader for the Sox, Sean Newcomb’s start gets pushed up to the 1:35 game.
Thanks, Longshot for the sports update. I think Ovi goes for the record at 12:30 in a game that’s on TNT. The great sports (I love this time of year!) continue into this week with the men’s Final Four tomorrow night (what a comeback by Houston!), the Masters this weekend, FC Barcelona in the quarterfinals of the Champions League European soccer tournament against Dortmund on Wednesday afternoon and the Frozen Four Thursday/Saturday.
I will need new batteries for the “click-ah!”
7) Bruins / Sabres at 6 p.m.
8) (Related to #2) .. the Caps game in which Ovi has a chance to break the record airs at 12:30 p.m. today on TNT.
Thanks TK
Thanks TK !
Thanks TK! If we could even have two days per week that resembled Fridays weather life would be grand.
That typically starts in mid to late May.
!2Z models point to snow in the air tomorrow, starting in the wee hours. Given it is April, tough to say amounts, but models are generally saying around an inch or 2 inches Kuchera. We shall see.
Here is an example. Full Disclosure, I purposely picked the most

robust model.

Who says it can’t SNOW in APRIL????
Snow depth change maps will be a more accurate hint for this one, since a lot of it (most of it) is a daylight event, lacking intensity. You’ll see those are not very impressive.
As previously mentioned, we’d be looking at an entirely different spring snowstorm set-up had that disturbance passing by on Tuesday been a little bit closer / faster and interacted with this system. Very close call, actually.
Yes, I figured that.
Interesting that there was no “setup” necessary for our rain events. They just happen on cue.
Not true. The low has to be in the correct position and the precipitation shield extensive enough to cover the region, not to mention the atmosphere is moist enough so that the rain can reach the ground and not evaporate.
This is not true, Philip. There’s no difference. It’s just conditional. We also happen to get more “rain” events than “snow” events over a 365 day period because of where we’re located on the globe.
Some winters / springs are snowier than others. Some years are rainier than others. It’s just event-to-event, pattern-to-pattern. There is nothing special separating snow from rain, making us unable to snow, because it’s snow.
I hope I get to see my last sleet/wet flakes of the season tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed it will be at daylight. Morning darkness gets extended on cloudy days with this stupid DST! The sunrise gets to hit the snooze button like it did this morning.
With April I always have to assume any flakes I see will be the “last” of the season.
We’ve seen them in May, so be careful.
Actually, that assumption should never be made in April.
Still raining here but back edge closer now.
Thanks, TK. I, too, love the change in seasons. For me, I love when the trees begin to blossom and the crocuses pop up too. Yes, it’s lousy in the rain. I just took a brief walk ouside and it’s cold, damp w/a light rain. I love the summer for it’s warm and yes, even some hot and humid days and of course the storms (as long as they don’t cause damage). And the autumn, for the eventual cooling down of the temps. and the color of the leaves. And the winter, too, for the snow and even winter has its beauty.I guess I just love the weather and the changes in each season.
Watching Caps vs Islanders. Ask me how many camera shots there have been of Ovechkin!
And his family and Gretzky!
Turn on TruTv – they have a camera that exclusive follows Ovi for the entire game.
Got it. Thanks.
Thanks! I put that on… I had to miss much of the 1st period due to a washing machine drain issue. Nothing major, just annoying. Temporarily fixed, but plumber is going to come do it “properly” early this week.
Ovechkin=895!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you, TK
I also enjoy the seasons. Spring has always been a time of rebirth to me. Like Rainshine, I love to see the trees budding. Birds are singing. Flowers are popping up.
Birds have been singing all winter but there are very few flowers here in Quincy, at least in my “backyard” at my facility. A handful of daffodils. Even the trees haven’t really budded out yet. Also, grass just starting to get green, literally.
The game is stopped. Unbelievable!!Never thought I would be around to see the day!
As someone who is barely familiar with the sport. ……hope it’s ok if I ask why it was stopped.
Giving Ovechkin acknowledgement, accolades and awards.
Ahh ok. Thank you. I read up. If I am not misreading, his sportsmanship is impressive
He’s a classy player. Been very important to the game. Getting closer to the end of a great career.
Wow. How special. And refreshing
No surprise at all. I figured they’d stop it right there and do the full ceremony. Only way to do it.
Sweet goal too – and how fitting that it was a PPG.
I’ll probably watch it another 100 times. There had to be over 2 dozen cameras on. I know some games have more than 30.
12Z Euro says NOPE to snow for tomorrow, despite what the other models say. Interesting… We shall see!
Over the years here on this blog, all I’ve read is that the Euro is the “KING”. Is that still the case?
It’s never really been “king”.
On many occasions, it’s had the best overall performance score over a period of time.
There’s no model king. All guidance needs to be understood (biases, limitations, etc.) and utilized properly.
Terms like “The King”, or “The King of the Models”, or “King Euro”, etc., in reference to the ECMWF, are really not accurate.
Sox going to extra innings in Game 1 as the tying run was walked in with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th.
Walk-off win.
Wall-Ball!
I was channel switching among golf, UConn, and Sox game and caught the walk-off. What a day in sports!
Still have Celts (which SAK is at), B’s, and second Sox game.
We have sun!!!
I can see some blue sky.
And now sun.
Yay
“Any sun today is bonus sun!” … Bonus! Not everywhere though, and not for long.
Have a bit here in the NW ‘burbs. Clouds will fill right back in not long from now.
Back to a threatening mainly cloudy sky here – just as expected.
From the NWS/BOX forecast Forecaster’s Discussion:
would not be surprised to see gusts of 35450mph frequently reach the
surface during the day Tuesday, especially over the waters and
Islands. Dry and sunny conditions expected both days as high
pressure builds in.
Vicki…I definitely would make sure the trampoline is tied down well on Tuesday for gusts of 35450mph.
Let’s hope and pray it’s a typo.
Hmmm. I better make sure the house is tied down. Yikes
That might solve our woodpecker issue.
Oh nooooo we had a woodpecker issue in Framingham. They were drilling holes in the wood along our roof. Good luck.
Thanks, TK.
Cardinals swept!
TK – Does Logan see another “Trace” of frozen tomorrow morning?
I think they have a shot.
Tuesday also.
Rain mixed with plenty of ice pellets in marshfield.
